Shotgun Normal Quick Curl Concept

Before, I get to showing the Shotgun Normal Quick Curl Concept, I want to personally say thanks to those of you who bought the Run-n-Gun playbook. It means a lot to me. I hope the book has improved your offense and given you new ways to move the ball.

Concept:

The Shotgun Normal Quick Curl Concept is designed to get the WR2 wide open on the curl route by giving him cushion. This concept works best against normal man coverage.

How the Concept Works on the Field:

To get this concept to work, we set the Goal Line FB Dive as our RB audible.

The play we use for this concept is the Shotgun Normal X Option. Notice the WR2 is running a curl route by default. This is really important because the hot route curl route does not work the same. As most of you already know this year, the curl route is often picked off due to how tight the RCB plays the WR2. To prevent this, we need to give our QB some cushion so the pass can be made to the WR2.

The defense called is Quarter Normal 2 Man Under QB Spy. The RCB is in man coverage on the WR2. Notice he is not in bump-n-run man coverage.

We press the X button, and then RB button. We then press the X button, and then the LT button. If done properly, the WR2 will line up at an angle towards the sideline.

We then hot route WR3 on a drag to make sure no defenders get close to the WR2.

In the screen shot above, we zoom in on the WR2. Notice how he is angled to the sideline. This allows him to get some cushion on the RCB.

Once the ball is snapped, the RCB will break towards the sideline ...

... then come back towards the WR2.

Notice the WR2 has inside position.

Once the WR2 starts to curl back, the RCB will keep running a few yards straight down the field before coming back to cover his man.

It's at this time we make the throw to the WR2.

The RCB has no chance to pick off the pass.

We make the catch for a 12 yard pass completion.

Key Points:

  • As we already mentioned, the hot route curl route does not work the same.
  • If you rather throw a quick pass to the WR2 before he curls back, go ahead as the RCB won't be able to pick the pass off.
  • Look for other plays in the Shotgun Normal or Shotgun 4WR (use the Goal Line Audibel) where the WR2 runs a curl route.
  • If bump-n-run man coverage is called, this concept won't work.
