Courtesy of EA SPORTS designer Larry Richart:

In this second title update we focused on some of the more debated topics from our loyal and passionate fan base. We appreciate all the feedback so please keep it coming! In this update you will be happy to hear that we have tuned our Flat Zone assignments to cover the flats more effectively. Defenders will not chuck a WR if another receiver is running a route towards their zone. This will help the defender be in better position to react to a quickly throw flat route and allow him to make a play. The flat zone defenders will also play the ball better if a pass is thrown behind the line of scrimmage as well as taking better pursuit angles after the catch to prevent the ball carrier from being able to get around the corner. This has been one of the top complaints that we have heard about and realized it was definitely something that we needed to address.

Along with tuning the pursuit angles for flat zone defenders, we have also improved the pursuit all defenders take - especially during a catch animation. This will help them get in better position to make a tackle on the receiver after the catch has been made. Another feature we have gotten a ton of feedback on is “Throwing out of Sacks”. We scaled back the height of which the ball is released when throwing out of a sack. By randomizing the trajectory of the ball to be lower, it helps cut down the number of interceptions thrown when trying to throw out of a sack. We have also added better arm tracking to determine if it should be an inaccurate or uncontrolled throw. For example, the further you are in your passing animation when you get hit, the more likely you will get an inaccurate pass versus an uncontrolled pass. Inaccurate passes are just like they sound and will more than likely be passes the go lower and right into the ground towards the receiver you are passing towards. However, uncontrolled passes are more likely to go higher in the air and have a better chance of being intercepted. The final part of our Throw out of Sack tuning focuses on the CPU QB. We have heard several people mention how difficult it is to sack the CPU QB, so we increased the chance of the CPU QB to hold the ball longer and actually take a sack instead of being able to get a throw out of sack pass off before he is brought to the ground.

We have also addressed some issues involving receivers in the passing game. The first one involved fixing some instances where a receiver would be ruled inbounds even if he only got one foot down on a catch. Another issue we resolved is a rare problem where under certain circumstances the ball would actually pass through a player when he dropped the pass.

In this update we have also fixed some annoying exploit issues. The first one we made is adding an initial move to the RB on the HB direct snap plays so he can’t immediately take off after receiving the snap. We also forced a QB drop initial move to force him to set up for a pass on Shotgun play action plays when you canceled the play action by hot routing the running back. This will keep the QB from being able to take off running right after getting the snap. Another change is not allowing the user to be able to move any front line players forward on kickoffs to keep them from being able to actually block the kickoff. We also resolved the exploit of being able to motion a receiver after flipping the play which caused the defender to go the other way. This allowed the receiver to be wide open against man coverage. You will now have to wait until the receiver is set before you can motion him. And finally, we fixed the bug where the QB could drift through the center when you repeatedly hot routed with certain quarterbacks.

This update will also have a fix for the clock running at incorrect times after an incomplete pass went out of bounds. The clock will not stop correctly as it does on any other incomplete pass.

We’ve also focused on some other important, non-gameplay related fixes as well including Uniforms, Franchise Stat tuning, Presentation, Online, Replays, and Scriptable Cut Scenes. I’ll fill in the rest of the details in these areas as soon as they are finalized.

We actually created our very first Call Sheet back in our Virtual Playbook for Madden 2002. Each year we have worked hard to customize the call sheet to work better with the Madden NFL game as opposed to being just like a real world call sheet. This year, we pulled some new concepts that we liked from various call sheet examples we found on the web. We are pleased with the final results.

Download the Call Sheet PDF File (Xbox 360 version)

Download the Call Sheet PDF File (PlayStation 3 version)

Download Page 1 Sample (partially filled in with examples)

Download Page 2 Sample (partially filled in with examples)

Download Run N Gun Sample - Page 1

Download Run N Gun Sample - Page 2

Call Sheet Instructions

Page 1

Audibles - this section is pretty obvious. Just insert the audibles that you have set up for your team.

Team Info - this section allows you to self-scout your team by putting in key ratings for your playmakers. You will also see space to put the team name as well as offensive & defensive playbacks that you are using with this call sheet. For the O-Line section, put the RBS/RBF ratings in the top box, and the PBS/PBF ratings in the bottom box.

Base Offense - in this box you will enter the plays that you are most confident in building your offense around.

Inside Runs - blasts, dives, isos, inside zone runs, etc.

Outside Runs - tosses, stretches, off tackles, pitch plays

Pullers - plays with a pulling guard such as counters and Power O runs

Special Runs - FB Dives, QB Draws, HB Draws, Wildcat Runs, etc.

Quick Game - quick passing plays you can use to beat the blitz

Play Action - your favorite play action plays

Screens - HB screens, FL screens, WR screens, etc.

Delay Routes - plays with 1 or more delay routes. Useful for beating “all-coverage” defenses

BNR Beaters - your favorite plays to beat bump-n-run coverage. Auto motion plays work well here.

Zone Beaters - plays you can use to flood zones

Passing Concepts - the key to running a strong offense is to run the same concepts, but from multiple sets. This section will help you get in a good play calling flow, while keeping your reads simple. Next to the letter (A, B, C, D, E) put the name of a passing concept you like. For numbers 1-4, put the name of the formations that it appears in. For example, the Corner Strike concept can be found in Gun Bunch Wk, Singleback Double Flex, I-Form Slot Flex and Gun Y-Trips Wk.

Page 2

Play Script - this is a Bill Walsh special. Basically you are scripting out the first 20 normal down and distance plays that you want to run. We define normal down and distance as being 1st and 10 or less, or 2nd and 7 or less. These plays will be called between the 20 yard lines. You can refer to situational calls for redone, coming out and 3rd down situations. Use the play script to throw different things at your opponent to see how he responds to your play calling. Be sure to get your favorite plays into the script early.

Go For 2 - this is a simple chart that lets you know when you should attempt a two-point conversion. If either the Ahead By or Behind By scenarios exist for your team after scoring a touchdown, you should go for two.

Situational Calls - this section covers plays in the Redzone (inside the 20), and coming out (from your own goal line to your own 10). It also includes plays for 3rd down as well as the two-minute drill.

Personnel Groups - with all the different formations and sets in Madden NFL 10, it can get confusing as to what personnel is included in each formation. If you sense that your opponent is struggling with your 2 TE sets for example, you are going to want to hit them again and again from these sets. The ALT. PACKAGE space gives you room to put in the name of a favorite package you have from that set as a reminder to use it in game. You will also see a blank set at the bottom where you can add your own favorite personnel package. We used 2 Back Sets in our example. You might go with something like Spread Sets or Empty Sets depending on your playbook.

I (VG_Bert) am taking on a new challenge this season. My goal is to take on an offline franchise where I play every single game. I downloaded the opening day rosters, and then set up the Franchise to have 32 user controlled teams. I’ll be playing every single game (16 each week).

Settings will be 9 minute quarters with accelerated clock turned on. I am putting some rules in place for myself. I’m not allowed to nano the CPU, and I must play with each team’s own playbook. So if I play a game with the Eagles, I have to use the Philly playbook. In addition, I try to play each team according to the style they use in real life. So for the Falcons, I’m pounding the rock early and often. Aiming for Sim style play as much as possible.

I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to keep it up (I’m running behind already due to the Offensive Coordinator’s guide work this week), but I’m done with Week 1 at least.

I would like to say that I went undefeated, but 5 fumbles by the Steelers (and 2 INTs) proved to be too much to overcome. So I was 15-1 for the week, lol. I’ve posted results and key stats from Week 1 below.

The focus of the news feature was on how to make the game accessible to your significant other. If you are looking for help getting your lady involved in the game, this article is a must read.

by Nicole Brewer

They say it’s just a game, but for some men it’s everything.

“It’s his passion, it’s what he does,” said virtual sideline wife Samantha Jackson.

For the past 7-years, she’s stood alongside Ron Jackson or “Philly Ron,” as he rose to the top, becoming one of Madden’s all time top players.

“I kinda knew what I was getting into at first, but I didn’t know he was going to be this serious about it,” said Jackson.
And Ron’s not alone. The best selling video game attracts players of all ages.

“Guys look at is as an extension of their ability to control a team, as an extension of their so-called former playing careers,” explained Ron Jackson.

So, how can you get in on the game time action? Start by leveling the playing field.
