Hey guys,

like Bomber and others have pointed out, the standard plays that normally work against a Cover 2 Zone don't necessarily work as well this year. As you all know, the weak spots in this coverage are the deep alleys and the deep middle.

But since the CBs tend to retreat VERY quickly, the alleys up the side close very quick...so, that leaves the deep middle. Of course, EA has countered that as well by employing more of a "2 Buc" variation with the Mike LB dropping much deeper. However, IMO the deep middle is far more attractive to exploit, as you've got potentially more favorable matchups (WR vs LB).

So, as long as you can "hold" the Mike underneath, there will always be potential for the deep middle to open up. Consequently, I've had some good success with Triple Seam and Post / Corner combinations. These will work provided there is enough traffic underneath to keep Mike from dropping too deep.

Attached is an example of a Post / Corner concept out of ACE Bunch. The play is "Quick Cross", and I employ this play by motioning the inside slot WR over to the left. Originally, he was running a 'stair flat' route, but after motion, he darts in, stair-steps up for five yards, then proceeds underneath.

Without motioning the slot WR, Mike will have no worries underneath, and he'll consequently retreat deep, effectively robbing the post. Hence, the WR running the post will be bracketed by the FS on top and Mike below - the middle of the field will be closed.

But after motion, Mike will jump the under route, and temporarily follow him across. The result is significant - big window up the middle. The QB should take a five step drop, hitch up, and throw on time. Just ensure that the throw isn't too early, or the Dime back / Will LB will jump the route...too late and Mike recovers. Either way, the post route generally breaks infront of the FS.

Nice post Bronc, very good breakdown. Reminds me of reading your posts in NCAA Strategies.

KBell,

thanks...I also forgot to mention that I'm playing on All American (default sliders), and the throw should just have solid velocity...not a bullet, certainly not a lob, lol...just a nice, standard throw.

Also, I just got back from the "lab". Pro Form "PA TE Wheel" works very well too against Cover 2 Zone also. SE runs a dig, TE runs a wheel, and FL runs a post. The only adjustments I make are hot routing the SE to a streak, and motion the FL and snap immediately (snap as soon as QB lifts is right foot). This is done to remove the possibility of a jam on the post route.

And the PA should hold the Mike...it's working for me...

Excellent breakdown Bronco! You're also right about the Pro Form PA TE Wheel. When I was looking for plays that can attack cover 3 I was looking for anything that had a post/dig concept. When I saw that play I thought to myself it would fit in nicely with your west coast style of offense.

Bomber,

funny you should mention me and my "WCO style of attack"...probably the past six months I've been totally into a vertical-style offense, vice horizontal ala WCO...for the most part I've shifted my philosophy to more of the Gillman, Coryell, Martz, Turner school of thought.

Of course you are aware that many of the concepts are similar, in particular concerning timing and choreography. But in my offense, I'm much more likely to have 2-3 alert routes vice the one you'd find in WCO. Sure there are less options to dump the ball off, but on the other hand, the defense is severly tested downfield.

A typical play for me would be X and Z running 20 yard comebacks, Slot running a 17 yard dig, and the back or TE running a dump off underneath to hold the under coverage.

Unfortunately, that's one of the issues I have with NCAA ...there just aren't many 20 yard comebacks, 17-20 yard digs, etc. I'm all about the dig now. That literally is what my offense in Madden is based on.

Man, you complete that, you've done good. Plus, it just pisses off the defense, lol...you're throwing right in the heart of their coverage... :D

excellent breakdown Bronco...This game is just wonderful how you have to do so much to get somewhere on offense for once, I'm not a NCAA expert nor a novice player for NCAA but I just love playin both O and D so far this year and this post helps a lot!

Bronco is an offensive genius... and by offensive, I mean he smells bad. :D

All joking aside, he knows his stuff. You guys should see his created playbooks in Madden, they're FAAAAN-tastic... but he still can't score on my d.

Nice diagram Bronk.

I noticed last night in practice mode against Nickel Cover 2 zone , hot route you HB to a curl occupies the linebacker momentarily.
