View Full Version : Recruiting Strategies?
First off, Hello all, i have been browsing these forums for the last couple of weeks and found them to be the best and most enjoyable to read about the game... Hads off to the mods and the posters here... I plan on sticking around and participating in discussion now. with that out of the way....
So I went through my first season as my wonderfuly bad but undefeated cupcake team in about two days, and yesterday i did the recruiting for the first year, i poured almost all my money in training and recruiting, leaving little for discipline (which has turned out to be a bad thing this season... since i cant even really suspend freely.) anyway... during the recruiting i had a hard time getting people to commit... I'm wondering if anyone knows how much one should really spend on a player in each round or not?
I basicly poured max into every player i was interested per round.... i felt that probably was excessive at some points... but i really needed players.
I was disapointed that not one of the players cared that my coach was coach of the year :( i seem to hit more often with the team perstiege pitch then anything...
So i guess I am wondering if anyone has decent strategies for recruiting? I dont know if the recruiting is the same as last year, because i never actually played it... i would do one season and move onto another team or would have madden by the time i completed a season with a team i liked, and switch games....

Welcome aboard! We look forward to you sharing your thoughts with us. I haven't had a chance as of yet to do any recruiting, but as time goes by I'll be able to dig into it. From what I understand about Dynasty the discipline of players is a big issue that you must deal with.

What you should do is spend the minimum on interested players because you must find what pitch they'll go for. After u find the correct pitch, then spend as many points as you see fit. If he's instate and good, spend the whole 15. Otherwise, spend like 20-30 unless you really need him or he's top, I don't know, 15 at his position. If the player is instate, scout him first. Don't scout out of state unless the state is close to home, just recruit. Sometimes, if you have doubts about a recruit, scout him then consider recruiting. Now theres always exceptions: If the guy is from the other side of the country and you want him, scout him so you don't have to waste points on recruiting if he's bad. The first week is to find potential recruits, even potential signees with average or low interest, and correct pitches.
You should make multiple passes through your targets and the other recruits each week. First pass is to find interested (either high or very high) recruits and find the right pitch. These you should either scout by the second and third weeks if you haven't already. Second pass, you solely scout the other recruits. If they're close to your school, consider recruiting instead. Third pass, this only applies if you haven't used up all your points in the 1st or 2nd pass. Distribute the points among your current targets, the ones you've offered scholarships to or scout recruits who you think will help your team even if they're not interested. Who knows, you might sign them. Either way, use up all your points and scholarships each week.
One good thing i noticed is that by scouting, ur also unofficially (not offering scholarship) recruiting them. I use Auburn and I scouted a WR from Washington and never touched him again. He was moderately interested when I scouted him but then put me on at number 1 on his list of interested schools by Week 5. I signed him by only spending 20 points and I didn't even throw the right recruiting pitch at him.
Thats about it. Good luck

I second the idea of looking in-state for recruits since they take less points. Depending on what state your school is based in, you can have it nice and easy by picking off guys in your home state and using the max 15 points to recruit them.
My strategy in my recruiting was in state for about 50% of my targets the first week, then increase that each week since you get less points to where by the time I was in week 4 and 5, most of my prospects were in Florida and Georgia (I am using the Canes in my Dynasty FYI) and by doing this, you can go after the one big out of state target you want, while still having a lot of points to give out offers out in state so at least if your one big target doesn't sign, you have 2 or 3 other guys who could sign instead of going after 2 big point players and having none and having to go with an unprepared freshman or worse, a walk on.
Never go max on points also unless its in state. In state recruits at the most is 15 points recruiting, and I always spend the 5 on scouting since I try to look for some high upside, low trouble players. Other than in state, very rarely go max.
About the pitches, that seems to be all luck. I haven't mastered that aspect and they had it in last year's version. Most of the time it is luck.
Hope some of this advice helps. When I do my second batch of recruiting, I will try to see if I can think of any more tips.

as far as what pitch to throw, look at the top shools on their list. if you see that the other schools don't match up to yours i'd go the prestiege route. location of the player and thier top schools seams to matter also.

Does style of play have any affect on the recruits? I've been trying to sell my wide open aerial assault to quarterbacks and receivers, but so far no top quality takers. I also must point out I'm playing with San Jose State :).

Style of play is a factor for some recruits... i just finished my canes season last night and I got the #1 OLB and it took 5 weeks and the last thing i pitched him was my coaching style... it said something like Maxwell is really looking forward to playing aggressive Hurricane football. There was one other guy i got that said something about playing Hurricane football too. I ended up haveing the #2 Draft Class... Texas Beat me out. But I beat OU for the NC 19-0 it was great...
I'm not sure the cpu actually recognizes your playing style. The playing style is just a pitch and I don't think having a big passing game attracts wr's, or a power run game attracts rb's.

Definitely not as much as last year. True a good passing game doesn't necessarily attract WRs and the same with RBs but that doesn't mean they won't come because of it. As long as you pass and run, both will come. Of course, this doesn't mean you run 54 times and pass once. Somewhat balance it. Not exactly 50-50......you know what I mean
