View Full Version : Defending the deep pass to Moss!!??

my friend uses the patriots. He is a pretty good baller. He can read when its zone and know which one of his routes will beat that zone and when. This usually isn't a problem, the problem comes in with the deep pass to moss. He is not glitching or anything, but everytime I'm in Cover 2, Cover 3 or Man coverage he can air it out to moss on a streak and get the ball 90% of the time. Even if I spotlight and play Cover 2 Man, Moss outruns my safety and Corner, The only thing I can do is play Cover 4, which stops it, but then that opens all the middle of the field for him to nickle and dime me to death.
cliffnotes: what type of plays do you guys call, and what kind of defensive playmakers do you guys do to help stop the deep pass (other then spotlight) to help counter the deep pass?

Why not just manually move the CB back on Moss' side so he can't get burnt deep?

Since this thread is similar to my question, ill ask it here. It's sorta embarassing, but how can I stop the long bomb? I'v tried bringing lots of pressure, playing deep zones, and 3 man deeps with my CB playing deep coverage, and my shutdown CB R. Mathis and Brian Williams get beat (usually on a crucial late play) on a deep streak. This has happened against Javon, TO, and Colston so far.

Are you getting beat overtop or are they just just out-catching you at the ball? Some of the receivers you listed are rather slow, that's why I ask.

over the top sadly and yes I know, that's why I'm asking how this is happening heh. I guess I could try user swatting, but I'm not confident in myself to do it risking TD or interference.

They could have been using the deep ball glitch.
And yes, you should definitely go for the swat yourself.

Why not just manually move the CB back on Moss' side so he can't get burnt deep?
i'll try that, but that would only work if the CB was in man coverage. Man coverage blows in this game because any drag, curl, in, out pretty much destroys it so i try not to play man often. I'm going to give it a shot though, but once he sees man coverage he'll just throw to someone running a drag.
Is it possible to come out in zone and then playmaker the CB into playing man without changing everyone else to man coverage?

Sorry, my bad. I should have explained better.
If you are running a 3-deep zone, usually you will have 2 CB's and a safety assigned to cover deep. If that is the case, then take the CB on Moss' side and drop him back 5-10 yards.
Now, if you are running a 3-deep zone that has two safeties and a CB covering deep, you can also make it (by flipping or leaving the play alone) so that the safety NOT playing the deep middle is over top of Moss. That safety will now be a good 15 yards or so overtop of Moss.

The best way to counter this is to continue playing zone, mostly cover 2 and cover 4. Which ever side of the field that moss is lined up take one of the safety's and hot route the safety to play man coverage on Moss. You can mix that up when playing cover 4 by hot routing the corner lined up over Moss to man cover him. You will have to practice this probably in practice mode, because you have to be quick in order hot route the db to man cover him.
Another thing you can do is put the double X, double y or double slot in your audibles and call the cooresponding audibles to double team him. I hardly ever play man to man coverage in Madden 09, but if this is the only play that your dude is doing, this coverage will stop that.
Good luck.

I played a guy yesterday and all he did was throw to Moss. He ran two different plays and all passes went to Moss. He ran out of big sets like 1 or 2 WR's and ran playaction. I could not figure out how to stop him so I just played deep coverage and let him move the ball down the field and when he got inside the 30 I would change my defense and stop him sometime.
I ended up beating him 49-42 but he did have 538 passing yards and 528 of them were to Moss. I just started passing on him and ended up with almost 500 yards passing. One thing that did help me in the second half was I would roll my coverage to the side Moss was on.
I do play with the Packers and their corners are good but very slow.
Cover flats with a outside lineman
Move 1 lb to cover middle.. ..,deep zone and manually cover moss..its alot easier now then it has been just get behind him at the start... give him the short route but don't let him get behind you..
Try a prevent combo with man or zone coverages..... you create.
Thats what make this game so great... we learn to adjust!
Hope I helped a little
Peace.

I use the Pats and the biggest Pain-In-The-@$$ i run into is when the defense brings heat from the side Moss is on. this causes me to either A) hurry and throw to moss before he was open B) try and roll away to other side and throw ball away C) check down to TE or RB....... But mix it up because after your opponent picks up on your strategy he will flip moss to other side or in the slot or hot route a TE or RB to pick up your blitz and we all know that a blitz that doesnt get any heat on the Patriots most likely will get 1 of your DB's exposed. Hope this helps.

You can still run your cover 2 and cover 3 but all you have to do is play as the safety covering the deep ball. Make sure that your zone is one the same side of the field as the receiver you are covering. Then just run out and swat the ball leaving your cpu D in good coverage on the underneath routes. The deep ball is much harder to get this year than ever before.
Also if you develop some better blitz packages the QB wont be able to buy enough time to get deep.
