View Full Version : What Are Your Thoughts on Bump and Run Coverage?

I've been paying very close attention lately to how the receivers counter the bump and run coverage technique that's played by the defensive backs. What I've been doing is testing a number of different routes against bump and run so that I can see what works and doesn't work against it. I've noticed that when the defense uses bump and run the receivers in many instances will actually perform certain quick moves and stutter steps in an attempt to beat the jam. The receivers in an atempt to beat the jam will either do a stutter step inside and break outside or they'll do a stuter step outside and break inside.

I've tried this out with a number of different routes and I've noticed it seems to happen with most routes with the quick flare/arrow routes being the exception. Another thing that I've noticed is the bigger receivers are very tough to jam. If the defensive backs are able to get a bump it'll usually only be for half second before the receiver is able to beat it. With this I now make sure that I put my biggest and best receivers on the outside and my smaller guys in the slot and so far I've noticed that the jam is ineffective in many cases. I've been testing this out with even the best defensive backs and have had similiar results. I must point out though that the defensive backs reaction to the ball is a tad unrealistic. I've watched instant replays where they make plays on the ball even though their backs are turned to the quarterback and the receiver has yet to come out of his break.

Bump and run coverage still does have it's place though. Usually when someone uses bump and run they're more than likely blitzing. So if the jam is effective in throwing of the timing of the route it can lead to a sack on the play.

I don't use it as much this year as I have last year. For some reason, my CB's just can't jam the receivers. The receivers either throw them aside or step around them. Not once have i successfully jammed a receiver. Although I have done it unintentionally like when a LB is covering one and jams them.

I am still working on learning my O playbook and reading 2005 D's so I have not had time to play online yet.

From what I have seen in practice 'Canes vs 'Canes and in vs. CPU games @ Fl State The DB's sometimes tie up my WR's for 10 yds down the field completely knocking them out of any intended rout.

I'm glad you brought this up because I had intended to start working on tactics vs. the bump this week. Anyone else have this issue?

I have gotten a few interference calls because of the bump-n-run....the CB will jam the reciever...and then release only to have the SS or FS be in a position by that time to hinder the WR from accomplishing his route....more often than not the QB will throw to the spot...and the ball will drop...and I will get a flag. Most often I have found this happens on crossing routes about 10 to 20 yards out.

I use the bump a lot in conjunction with Cover 2 Man defense, as part of my deep ball defense. I find that the bump at the line throws the timing of a lot of the routes off, and allows for the safeties to get depth, and assess which routes to concentrate on as deep threats.

I will OCCASSIONALLY use BnR with a man or Cover 2 zone blitz, with the hopes of catching the offense off gaurd.

everytime I use it in conjunction with a blitz I get beat for a lot of yards :( , I'm going to stay away from it for the time being, my corners suck in my dynasty, and my safeties are pretty bad as well so my personnel aren't able to handle this type of technique

I tested this out online tonight and I was able to beat it quite a bit. My problem is sometimes the receivers won't cooperate and catch the ball ;) .

the corners only bump in zone for me. they bump w/o me telling them to.

I have to go with HOBB's about the BNR. If I dont get pressure on the QB, I'm getting burned BAD. I stickin with Zones until I can figure it out or Bomber does.

Believe it or not, the BnR is probably the most realistic its ever been...and frankly its still WAY too effective.

On the other hand, it IS just a video game...and I understand people want to be effective, especially since their opponents will jump at any chance to exploit the AI also.

But, ultimately, BnR coverage is one of the hardest techniques for a DB to execute, particularly in man coverage. If a DB even manages to get something closely resembling a 'jam', he's done extremely well for himself.

My personnel on my team are so bad that they just run around my bump. My best DB is in the 70's OVR and that is my problem right now. If I played with a better team I may be more successful, but as of right now BnR=6 for the other team

I have gotten burnt for 6 or big yardage trying to use BnR in my dynasty as well. But like Bomber I did notice that my DB's get tossed to the side * literally * or side stepped by the bigger recievers. What I do in my dynasty is when I feel like gambling I'll call for a BnR and which ever side has the bigger WR I'll take whichever safety is on that side and manually defend the space the the WR would normally be open after he breaks the jam. I haven't gotten beaten for 6 a whole lot since I started doing this.

FWIW Just playing the CPU I've been convinced to never play bump n run and very little man coverage. Usually I move my secondary back so my super CB's can cover a full 30yd radius containing 3 wr's and then the rest of my DB's try to keep there unis clean so they don't have to wash them between games.

here's my scheme, i usely run zones, and if i feel the need to blitz i try multiple zone blitzes with over the top help. i found it to be pretty effective when using bump and run, but you can't settle on one package or one zone blitz. you must frequently change your package and your zone blitz. i also take control of the safety depending on the strong side of the field and how many recievers are on each side.

Here is a question , I have not checked this out yet. In a nickel cover 2 zone the corners still bump the receivers knocking them off of there route somewhat. If you call nickel cover 2 zone in the game , and call bump n run, do they jam them better at the LOS rather than not calling b n run. I would try this out now but I am at work.

i'll have to look into it tonight to give you a definite answer, i'll get back with you tomorrow on it

I'm going to take a peek at that as well.

Diversity is the name of the game, multiple looks is where it is at. I rotate through the formations on every play, may start in a 4-3, then second down go 3-4 or nickel, third go dime, 335 or 3-4, just keep switching it up. I read it in either this post or another one to move the safeties out and back a bit prior to the snap, and that has helped alot in the past couple of games
