View Full Version : Defense for Hail Mary?

This question may go hand in hand with the previous discussion about defense for the deep ball, but I need a solid defense for the hail mary play. I have run dime prevent, nickel prevent, 335 prevent, 335 quarters, dime and nickel cover 2 and cover 3 schemes, all with added audibles to drop the secondary back into deep coverage and I still get beat on it about 30-40% of the time, which is entirely too much considering I know the play is coming. I don't wanna go into man coverage because that leaves a few one on one matchups that are sure to get toasted (or do I? you guys tell me). Is this just a flaw in the game I have to accept or does anybody have a rock solid defense designed specifically for the hail mary? I do manually control my defenders to knock the ball down, but half the time the receiver has found a soft spot in the coverage and my defenders aren't near enough to knock the ball down. Which also begs the question: if I'm dropping 8 freakin' guys back into deep coverage, how in the world is there a soft spot to begin with?

This has been driving me nuts as well. It's tough to blitz while playing online with XBOX Live becasue everyone moves too slow. The defenses that I've had some marginal success with is the cover 2 man schemes and the 3-3-5 double outs while I control the free safety. These at least provide some type of double coverage on the receiver. I'd like to be able to sit in the deep zones but the defensive backs don't do a good job of playing the deep ball.

I call dime cover 2. I manually blitz the qb. With the Analog blitz in my possession. I can almost get there just as the ball gets there. If not, I can at least make him nervous and get rid of the ball earlier than he wants to. Once that happens, I position my self to hit the receiver (L2 style).. It works really well for me...

Where exactly do you send the blitz? Do you come from the interior gaps or do you spread a DE out and come from the outside? I don't plan on having to do this very often, but I got scored on in the fnal 30 seconds of the 1st half on two straight hail marys. In those situations, I'll just do what I have to do. I was up 14-0 and getting the ball back, but needless to say the late TD made a huge difference in the game (I still won, but it was closer than it should have been).

It's more effective against the pass if you bring the pressure from the outside.

I'm with AWN on the AB, and Bomber on the Blitz, I have stopped most long bombs with the 3-4 Monster 3 Zone coverage made into the 30 stack with me AB blitzing the opposite LB from the other side.
I'm moving my LB right next to the DE, and when he tries to run to the other side I got the blitzing DB from there, once in a while he'll he get the pass off, but not for a big gain.
Schemes that use the AB, will slow this Deep bomb down.

You Analog Blitzers kill me. Its so lame. Where is the fun in that? Anyone can do it. I dont understand why people have to AB all the time. I guess because they have no skill and know nothing about football at all.
You people wanna know how to stop the long ball? Try a USER PICK. It works for me all the time.
I play the game for fun. I run real defenses and dont exploit glitches in the game. No reason to play otherwise.

Evendently, u have not come across one of those who throw the deep ball the whole game and knows how to throw the deep ball all the time.
You'll be back soon, asking the same thing, how do I stop the cheesy deep ball with the AB, Mr. I can USER PICK, like we didnt know that.
I dont have NCAA 05 yet...didnt plan on getting it but i won it and am waiting for it in the mail so i read this forum....i see a million posts saying the deep ball is too easy..i also see a bunch saying the DB control is instant and so much better now....so ummmmm.....id ask the same qq....why dont you defend it manually???

You can't defend them all manually....and unfortunatly what they are talking about is only online, I assume. Online is a completely different game than against the AI....You have cheesers that will drop back and throw the deep ball every play....and I mean EVERY play. Personally, I just call a timeout and tell the cheeser if he keeps it up I will quit and leave a stinging feedback for them....I really don't care about my "rankings"....I play for fun....and online it's rarely fun. :(

in 2004 i loved it when someone went deep. That was the easiest way to get a user pick.
For some reason it is way harder to get user picks this year, to the point that if you miss your done. The best way to defend these balls is to hit the receiver as he's catching it. But it is very difficult to knock down all of them when someone starts throwing deep every play. When that starts to happen the game really isn't fun anymore, because strategy goes right out the window and the game turns into who gets lucky.

There r plyers who try to time the starting of the ply to get a jump on their competitor. So u r not making sense. It doesn't work all the time, and there r times u will get called for off side. It sounds pretty realistic to me. I normally will bring and end from the outside to pressure the Qb.... With 80 spd DEs u can really make the qb uncomfortable in the pocket.

Nik, the DB's react well to the short and medium plays but get stupid when the deep ball goes up for some reason.

They act way to agressive from short to medium range passes when playing zone, almost as good as superman, but when you throw it deep its a different story.

No almost everyone I play throws the deep ball constantly. Its part of the game. Exploiting glitches in the game is weak. I guess if you had dial-up you would force lag as well right?
Of course you would.

I only played the game for one day and noticed how dumb the db's are on the deep ball. You have to play manually. If you switch too late to the db, you wont have time to get in position to make a play on the ball. It almost seems as if the db drifts away from the Wr on the deep ball. Just switch as soon as you can and take control immediately.

switch to defender and L2(big hit)
do It time the Wr reaches up for the ball
