View Full Version : Run Blocking, and the speed burst

It seems that whenever I have a hole and hit the speed burst to get through it, the DT always sheds his block and nails the ball carrier. Even when the guy I am running behind is 10 points stronger than the DT he's matched up with.
Just played this guy who would spread his line, so I run up the middle. A huge hole opens up at the snap, and as soon as I hit the X button the DT sheds his block and dives at my feet from like 3 yrds away making what looked like a 7yrd gain into a 1 or 2 yard gain.

Has anyone else noticed this?

should the speed burst button not be used until you through the hole?

I've had the same problem. I've almost given up on running up the middle because whenever I have a hole a DT just sheds the blocker and makes the tackle EVERY TIME. Its really annoying.

FlaPride, I have notice this also, last night I played againest a guy and I ran on his 4-4 in the middle, this time I tapped the speed burst over and over and I broke a few tackles doing this and always fell forward.

This is with Brooker of FSU vs a Ohio St team. Let me know how it works for u?

Yea it has happened to me also.. U have to out think the cpu... U have to run ur regular speed until u hit the hole.. Sudden movements always gets the cpu's attention.... That is the best I can offer... The cpu will do what it wants, and there is nothing u can do about it...

YEAH, you are exactly right Fla. Pride, you can now spred the DLine and your DT sheds the blockers pretty quickly to mak the tackle, if even seems like this when you run triple option. When you spread your DLIne you should be able to hit the FB of the middle on the toption or run up the middle period. Have you noticed this or not? The better the olineman you have can he hold his block longer?

not really my guy had 97 strength and the DT had maybe 80 STR and just chunked my guy to the side. I am going to go in the lab and experiment with some things but I think its triggered by the X button for some reason. if the D line puts a 9 ft gap in the middle and I run a draw or dive play then the LB or safety should be making the tackle not the guy who I just ran by that was completely out of the play.

I ran into a lot of the same thing where you'd have a huge hole, so you sprint to get through it only to be tripped up by a big sloppy DT who had been locked up with your lineman. What I've had success with is the ever forgotten highstep! If you time it right, boi oh boi! You can not only make the tackle look stupid, but you're able to tack on additional yards because you can still use the sprint full strength afterwards because you didn't hit it coming through the line.

Hope this helps,

This tendency was in last years game. If you don't hit the speed burst button until you are already in the hole you will have a better average. The DT's will be fully engaged and they don't shed their blocks as fast. Try this technique in practice mode to see exactly what i mean. It will take time to stop pressing the speed burst button.

Don't hit your speed burst going into the hole. Instead, use stiffarm to keep the DT at bay. Then hit speed, but beware of the LBs and be prepared to make a quick juke. Don't expect big yard gains at first, but 4-5 yard gains should be common. Soon, the DTs and LBs confidence will drop and huge gains will be more likely.
