View Full Version : Reads or Route Combos against Cover 2 Sink

Seems like no matter how good my run or pass game gets during a single game, when defenses eventually try a Cover 2 Sink on me I throw tons of picks. Are there specific reads or route combo tips anyone has to attack this D?

Let's say, late game situation, down by 4, 3rd and long (7-10 yards), in field goal range, either in red zone or just outside. You know your opponent knows you can't beat cover 2 sink and you're expecting it. What do you call?

btw, I'm typically using either the Eagles or Steelers, so decent teams, if that makes any difference for you (it really doesn't to me, but...)

um, ace form, extended out from TE on both sides streak the HB, drag the faster WR in from the bigger WR, look over the middle or hit the speedy guy in one of the holes.

just pulled that out of my ***. depends what player the user is controlling.

Dude...I don't know why a lot of people have trouble with Cover 2 sink or any Cover 2 for that matter....the weakness is Deep down the middle...you can have an inside receiver or TE doing a streak and pass lead inside when he is deep enough or you can have a Deep Post by the outside receiver and wait for it to open when he cuts inside after a few steps...In my opinion, any Cover 2 play is weak in this game..the only Cover 2 play I like is out of the Dime (Top Players know which one i'm talking about)

Yeah, but someone can manually take those away.

As far as beating it, use a streak/corner/flats route combo and take what the outside hook zones give you.

Michura is right, the flood route he just described can kill any zone unless your opponent way overplays the outside. The smash/divide is extremely good against all forms of cover 2, 2 sink will let you hit the hitch to the outside reciever. I perfer the Divide over smash because even though they both maintain the same hitch/corner the Divide gives you a deep threat in the middle to keep the deep coverage from being able to rotate down to the corner.

true, also....another thing you can do is come out in spread and pick the play "curl-flat"...what I like to do is playmaker the curl on a fade...if the corner bites on the flat route I'll RC the fade before it gets to the 1/2 being played by the safety...if the corner goes too high with the fade then you have the flat route...either way, I still like my streaks inside and posts to beat this type of coverage...if for some reason, there is someone patroling the middle then I will RC the post.

I have a few plays for this...

1) Singleback Normal - TE Post (all-purpose play) :: The SE runs a drag on the same side as the slot running a corner, while the TE and FL run a Post and Streak respectively...

The Slot attacks the FS playing the deep half while the FL attacks the deep outside to force both safeties to widen. Once the TE gets behind the MLB zone he's open for at least a 15-20 yard gain against Cover 2 Sink.

The rest, I'm not so sure about what the names of the plays are... So I'll describe the route combos.

2) TE Corner/FL Post :: This attacks the SS in the deep half by sending two receivers to his area.

If pressure is a problem, motion the FL and snap the ball just as he gets to the TE. Both receivers will run straight at the SS and make breaks as they get to about 7-10 yards. The SS will be forced to run with one of them, then you throw to the other one.

3) Slot Streak/SE Corner :: Attack either deep safety with two routes.

One receiver running directly towards him with another making a break for the corner. The Safety will run with the deepest receiver, leaving the corner route open near the sidelines.

There's a theme... Just send two receivers to the deep area from the same side at a single safety. When they break out, throw to the one the safety is farthest from.

my dude you were talking about TE post waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the ps2 days when you made the thread about "my play" and the kid tried to use it on you lol

TNT what PB are you using?
singleback normal TE corner - west coast, pass balanced, RNG
singleback doubles TE post - Panthers, steelers, seahawks, jets to name a few.

Still rolling with SEA... Dabbled with others for a while, but I always come back to this one. It doesn't have everything I want, but it has everything I need. ;)

Yup... It's been my play since Madden '03 and still killin fools. I don't see many guys running it though. At least not anymore. Best play for 3rd and 25 or 3rd and 2. And I'm still finding new ways to run it... Got about 35-40 right now.

A few months ago I played my best friend, who is a decent player, and I ran that play EVERY DOWN. Had 7 different guys with catches (they get tired).

That play is so nasty... :D

Any route to the flat combined with a streak on the same side leaves a GAPING hole in this defense. Fb to the flat, WR streak.....and you can throw anything you want to the TE/slot/HB that falls in the 25 yard gap between LBs and SS/FS. streaks, "C" route, deep ins and outs, posts, corner posts, extended routes.....

And if you know this defense is coming--fade both WRs, put the TE(s)/Slot(s) on short square in routes and streak the HB---You get your HB in open field with only a FS on one side and a SS on the other and if either WR can make and hold a block its an automatic 6.

Yeah, that's a nice play, I keep it in my bag of tricks though, 3 times a game or less.

djK....What I like to do is call any play...but basically what I'm doing it streaking the WR on the TE side, and streaking the TE to split the safetly that gets sucked to the WR...drags will be open too obviously...so will routes in the flats...

What has worked well VS me in sink, is when opp's flood one side with ins/outs...IE, ball on left hash, curl rght WR, out with RB, TE, in with WR's on opp side of the field.then you have multiple WR's vs a few hook zones.

Sorry for my itrusion (sorry too for my horrible english).
I play with Madden09 on PS2.
Against running games few problems, but against pass plays... every qb is a hero.
I don't know why my DBs are very poor and they read the play action and leave free the opponent WRs.

Please help me to beat a passing game. :(

No problem on the offense, I score 28-35 points per game (8min at quarter in franchise mode, all-pro) but the opponents score 42-49 points with 5-6 TD pass.:mad:

Thank you

NEVER call man D...that's probably your first mistake. Second, that AI for the CPU passing game is insane..just turn it down a notch or two.

Divide concept. Wild Bunch - question for you about your comment on the divide play. I use the Run and Gun PB and there is a Divide play in the Weak-I Tight Twins formation. Can you break down how this play is supposed to work and how it would be effective in attacking the Cover 2 Sink defense as you claim? I am kind of a newbie and like understanding the concepts behind the plays.

If you are talking about Divide from another formation or PB, then that is fine too. It's just not obvious to me when I look at this play.

Thanks in advance

Big fan of the smash. Or anything that can drive you can get a receiver streaking in the middle of the field. WR running a hook and Slot running a Post out. Literally will destroy Cover 2.

The weakness in a Cover two is between the LBs and safties and the outsides between the CBs and Safties. I wish I could do some play art here.

The idea is simple. The TE, WR or HB even running the streak is used to take the SS/FS deep. This can cause problems for those who manually control players as well. The WR running the hook is used to occupy the CB. In a Cover 2, that is done. If he isnt occupied, he could freelance. In Cover 4, the hook will be wide open. The Slot WR running the post out towards the sideline is where the money is. It puts the safety in play. meaning, if they cover the streaking receiver, the slot WR will be WIDE Open. If they manually cover the Slot, that leaves the deeper receiver open. This can work well against man to man as well. It may eliminate safety help!

The drawbacks? Cover 3, Purple zones (can't recall what they call them) and Obviously HEAT. You need time to throw the ball. Also, the side of the field may be a giveaway. I try to run this to the wide side of the field.

I copied code from various peoples graphics...
I also changed one a little and reposted it (the how much noob are you).
I made some of the code from scratch to get it all together.
Is that all good?
