Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich contacted Activision and asked them for a free copy of the Guitar Hero Metallica version.
Does the game creators and game makers not deserve to get paid?
Was he not the one who went after Napster for allowing people to get music from the internet for free?
Just read this in my son's gamer magazine and found it somewhat funny.

Let's see, a person is ASKING TO BE GRANTED something for free. Last time I checked, people who were using Napster (myself included) didn't ask the artists or record labels, they just took.
But I guess it would also be ironic that someone who was upset over getting his car stolen would then turn around and ask to borrow a friend's car.
It's not about not wanting anybody to get something for free. It's about GETTING PERMISSION to do so. I don't see why this is so f*cking hard for people to understand.

So if people would have got in contact with Lars and asked him can I have a free copy of Metallica's album that would have been ok?
Why does the dude not just buy a copy of Guitar Hero? Why does he want a free one? It isn't like he doesn't have the money to go buy it.

Eh, my motto in life is " Don't ask , don't get " ... and this was way before Clinton came up with " Don't ask, don't tell" ! Anyway I ask for free stuff all the time, mostly on stuff I don't want anyway. I don't download music, I don't know what a napster is , but it sounds like something Imus could get thrown off the air for saying ... I don't like Metallica , and I don't have guitar hero ... but I think I might just write them and ask for a freebie too. If I get it you want it Drunken?

1) I don't know if it is Lars or a label executive. But in general, if you people for something they own and they agree to give it to you, it's ok.
2) People sometimes like getting things for free, even if they can buy or even if they won't even use it. Also, maybe he wants to have it earlier than the release date. My guess is that he said that as a way of saying that he will actually play the game, hence promoting it.
If you disagree with what Metallica fought for, I can understand. But at least have a decent understanding of it. Personally, I download music and movies. I know I shouldn't and I know it's theft but I do it anyways because I really don't care. But I can certainly understand why they opposed it and tried to put a stop to it.

Oh I do understand why he doesn't want it to happen. It takes money out of the artists pockets.
But I think it's somewhat odd he thinks it's not fair for people to download their music free early, but he wants a free copy of guitar hero early. Sure he was on the game but it's not like he can not afford it.

I find it somewhat ironic that someone who asked to borrow my cordless drill thinks that stealing someone else's drill is wrong.

He's probably used to getting alot of things for free. Besides, if something features your likeness, you should be able to get it for free.

So getting paid isn't enough?

I got a free piece of roast beef from the deli counter on Friday ... All I did was ask to try a piece for free... and they gave me one !!! Next time I'm going to ask for a taste of the double stuffed potatoes they got behind that glass. Eventually I will work my way up to free video games... if they ever sell them with the meats and stuff... :D
