Up one day, down three.

The stock market is a forward indicator, stocks could be rising due to the fact that the Fed is doing a huge open market purchase.

I sell on days like this...and get short with about an hour to go.

Or...positive GDP growth is predicted later in the year and the smart money is getting in now (right before terrible 2Q GDP data is released)...

Long term...I'm still not so optimistic.

Would like to see some other numbers (housing starts, foreclosure rates, consumer confidence) diminish more until I make any long positions. (EDIT: not meaning go down more, but level off...)

Oh no, I am happy about the increase. I pray this economy gets back to its better days.

I just find it ironic how you are mr. happy, happy joy joy. How much has the stock market tanked since Obama started announcing his socialist plans?

How much since you libs took over congress in 06?

I am glad you are here to tell us abou the good times though. Let us see what happens after Obama tries to nationalize the banks.

Of course you would think that is a great idea, one would imagine.

You're not happy, you're waiting for total failure for the simple reason that you can say "i told you so" .... lol

The stock market started its decline long before Obama took office. There's a lot of blame to go around on both sides of the aisle for what's wrong here, including the approval of the GOP Congress before '06 to get rid of some regulations for these financial institutions. But there's no room or time to sit around and point fingers, this is the time for solutions and working together.

It would be nice if the GOP stopped saying "no" and "we can't" and actually started coming up with some solutions of their own. But we're not seeing that from them.

Hey, Nevada, how's that rocket doing today? Looks like it exploded. Hint: it's down.

It might have something to do with the Treasury having an auction for five year notes, and they had no buyers...

Arguing about the increase/decrease of the stock market on a day-to-day basis is silly.

Bear market rally imo...get ready to hop back on those shorts.

Ummm...that was kinda my point with my initial post. A rally for one day here and there is meaningless in the long term, so don't get all excited.

Overall the market had a decent week considering the past few, is that a correct assumption?

The thing is they want true capitalism if I'm not mistaken (which I may be). So they want to do nothing and let companies fail, creating marketspace for new companies that drag us out of the recession. That's how capitalism works, it goes in a cycle.

true capitalism also doesn't have a financial monopoly like AIG had.

Does it have a monopoly?

Well, someone was supposed to stop that. Then this is a bank that should be saved if it has a monopoly, but then broken apart into smaller pieces by the government. Socialism I know, but this is a special case apparently.

Actually unrestricted capitalism ends up exactly like that.

Days like last Monday and days like this Monday are the reason that it's pretty pointless to get worked up over one day at the Stock Exchange.

yea, investors aren't diggin' the whole GM thing today... we'll see if there's a mild rise by end of the week. Last week turned out ok. But no one is looking for a one day or one week fix-it-all/180 turn around in things. Just some signs that things are on the way back is good.

Is now redefined... or has it ben redefined for year? Seems like every 25-50 years every capitalist country becomes the victim of its own existence and needs to readjust itself .... basicaly like shooting yourself in the foot so your head doesn't hurt as much. Then remove bullet from foot and enjoy life until the next migraine hits - then shoot yourself in the foot again.

"Capitalism is an economic system in which wealth, and the means of producing wealth, are privately owned and controlled rather than commonly, publicly, or state-owned and controlled." What Obama and other countries have proposed are in direct contrast of what capitalism is. Whether or not it's the right the thing for the economy is another discussion. On that note I think it would be in the best interest for the country that we would have let the companies fail and ride out the problems we have now instead of risking the problem to be prolonged and possibly deeper. Not only would it be in the best interest of the country but I also think that the government has no legal right to take our money to buy out privately owned businesses.
