I got totally drug through the mud today on outside runs and screens. I took 3 losses to Level 1's, which is not accepted by me. I thought it was because I was trying to send heat up the middle and they were bouncing it outside on me, so I tried to contain my OLB that didn't work. I tried blitzing my CBs that didn't work. I switched to man, that didn't work. I was totally pissed. S. Slaton ran for 238 yards on me.
Screen plays kicked my azz cuz if I miss the first tackle attempt then it's a guaranteed 6 which I don't understand. I mostly run Cover 3 to try and cover the flats, but my mojo was turned off today. Usually, I don't pick up on the screen being set up the first time it is ran, but I adjust and look for it after that, but it still seems to whoop me. S. Slaton had 3 catches for 154 yards. I was hot.
All advice is accepted, cuz I'm having problems stopping it and it doesn't work when i try it. So on both ends, I'm shooting blanks.
I run SD playbook, usually try to bring heat up the middle, and Cover 3 behind it and user the right side of TV screen, while containing or Flat zone the left side of the screen

Yeah, I'm having a similar problem, but I started using the man to man defense, and it slows down those plays. Not stopping them, but slowing them down. I hope that help...

Funny you should mention, this. I was going to post the same thing. Seems like screens and outside runs have all of a sudden become a real bear to defend. I was playing one guy and he went to screens every other play seemed like. It was destroying cover 3. So I started running screens and they were unstoppable, so it turned into a total cheesefest... but yeah man seemed to slow down the effectiveness of the screens when I changed up my D later in the game.
Outside runs were all of a sudden a problem for me too recently, but using 3-4 stack formation and sticking the DE's on contains seems to do the trick for those.
Is it a patch thing? Because my D seems to be not as effective as it was prior to the last patch.

Yes. Put the DE's in QB Contain and that will wreak havok with most screens. Sometimes the DE will even pick it off.

Most Madden ballers I face run cover 3 80% of the game. You run a passing set with cover 3 and I will run to the end zone on you all day.
Try hitting the lab and actually learning how to play defense. Outsmart your opponent, hide your coverage, mix it up, blitz from different angels, highlight receivers, MAN STICK, etc...

So true. I was getting into the habit of just running my cover 3 with some nanos here and there, and over time my D wasn't what it used to be. So I started concentrating more on playing D based on the Offensive formation being called, and then making adjustments based on what I see at LOS, shifts, hot reads, man/zone audibles, etc. There are so many things you can do on D that if you really try to get into it. That has made a big difference to me.

It's not just base cover 3. I mix in blitzes and man coverage, I just try to have 3 over the top because Cover 2 is too easy to beat IMO. I do highlight receivers if I see a tendency of who he's going to, or if he has a dominant receiver like a Moss or somebody. I feel you though

If you want to make a big play, sometimes you have to gambe. The trick is disguising your plays so your opp doesn't know when your gambling. It's ok to leave three deep but every now and then, but if you want to force turnovers you have to confuse your opponent. If I know you will always have 3 dropping deep, I only have to gameplan against 8 guys instead of 11. You make yourself very predictable.
Look, I consider myself a defensive guru. If you ask anyone who has ever played me, they will tell you the same thing. You will rarely ever know what I am running on any play - and that's what makes my defense so good.
It also doesn't hurt having what I believe is the best defensive personel in the game - and knowing how to use them.
I've used Baltimore - only Baltimore - consistently for the past 5 years. I know that team inside and out. I've also been using the same playbook for years. I have a personal set up for almost every play and for many I have multiple set ups. You will rarely ever see me run the same play more than twice in a gamed. That alone gives me a huge advantage.

If he just keep running tosses and screens, you can try a cover two. The put your D ends in contain. That will put the ends covering the outsides, and also puts your corners out there in case the end gets blocked.

I read in your other post that you play with the Skins... Try using the 46 playbook or the Titans PB rather then San Diego's, also try slanting your DL to where you think the play is gonna go. And you dont have to always come from the middle with heat, try overloads... Bring the saftey in the box as well and try and user him or the MLB and be patient dont bite on PA or Counters
