Common sense works best this year. Whatever you think is coming, jump all over it.

I'm playing tremendous defense this year. I establish dynamics that limits what players can do, then I jump all over the counter for what I'm doing.

Players love the screen this year, so I'll zone blitz the crap out of them until they have to throw it. Then, I'll QB Contain a player on the screen side, manually move my user defender out there, and have the CB in a short zone so I can click on and blast the reciever - while the blockers are tied up with my other 2 defenders.

How do I stop the pitch? How about putting the OLB in a QB Contain and usering the DE - and shooting him through the B Gap to take the outside again and hit the runner for a 4 yard loss? Does that work?

Common sense is completely overpowered in Madden 10. :p

I agree. This year is more about knowledge and strategy than it is about gimmicks.

Thats hows its always been, how good you where in the previous versions combined with the knowledge of the inner workings of madden have always been what sets apart the elite from the bums.

Pick the right plays at the right times, you can increase your chances of this through playtime.

I like the tips Gav has given. I think people are looking too hard for the AI to help them play the game. Keep it simple and look to overload if your going to blitz. Disguise your overload if possible. I've noticed on this site that alot of guys mashing buttons before the play to set up blitzes. Look at it different for some types of blitzes. Look at TRIO ZONE SKY out of a 3-4 defense. SHift your coverages manually to get an overload to the right by making it appear to be on the left. Example:

Bring FS down manually to LB depth, this looks like hes coming, Put RE in yellow zone. This will replace the zone of the RILB that you will be bringing manually on a blitz. You can even move the RILB toward the FS you just brought down to make it appear that you will be blitzing on the left side of the screen. When the ball is snapped, bring your RILB towards the blitz package on the right side of the screen and hit an open gap. I feel this is a better way to play defense and leave the plays design intact. Same coverages but you are deceptably moving your blitzers closer to an overload.

If you look at the game from a football perspective instead of a nano perspective it will change your perspective. It will also allow you to run any defensive play with confidense. Instead of wasting your time crashing and reblitzing players before the snap, concentrate on shifting assignments of players to keep the integrity of the play intact and blitz with 5 players and create a overload to one side while making it appear it's coming from the other side. The game is full of these oppertunities. You can still get 5 or 6 sacks a game with this type of thinking but you do not risk being expossed as much and it allows you to widen your play options.

Also, keep in mind that a human cannot see the whole field like the computer can. A human will get tunnel vision and want to stick with his own tendancies throughout a game. concentrate on flooding the defense on the area's of the field that the offensive players tends to attack. Use your other players to bring pressure. There might be a open hole on the field, but constant pressure will cause confussion. Once you instill fear and confussion, you can run all kinds of exotic blitzes as long as you defend the bread and butter of the offense. Try to play the game with a theory instead of running a few plays that you have decided are good. Limit yourself to only running your comfort plays when you need them. If you are controlling the games tempo, start start to experiment with theory instead of rerunning a series of 7 or 8 plays.
