Boring soccer is boring.
for a 1-0 soccer game where I had no love for either team, I thought it was quite an exciting final.

it was an intense game with a lot of yellow cards. not the smoothest game, but the british ref did a decent job of being consistent at least. he ended up giving out the most yellow cards ever in a final, but holland was scratching and clawing just trying to get a little bit of possession. spain controlled the game, but holland I thought had the best chances. Spain's GK Casillas saved them big time. After halftime Spain kept knocking on the door and the intensity and nerves just kept building.
Both teams were definitely feeling the pressure of trying to be the first team in their respective countries to win it all. Finally Iniesta came through with quite possibly one of the top 5 goals of the tournament, 5 minutes from the very end. Under the circumstances, that's probably one of the most important World Cup goals ever. It felt more like relief than anything though, cause Spain deserved it, but had to suffer to earn it.
All in all, they deserved it. They have the best ball control in the world. It's like the Giants of the 80's, or the Steelers, or the Ravens. Run run run. Ball Control offense, great defense. If boring == championship, I want some of that all day every day!!

The other day I painted my bedroom. For a few hours spent painting and staring at walls, I thought it was quite an exciting experience.

Swing by my place in Alexandria some time. I'm planning to hold the world championships of earthworm racing some time. It's boring, but you might want to check it out since you might get a championship... and I heard you like that all day every day.

I'm glad people can stop pretending to care about soccer now. It's tolerable once ever four years. This game was loaded with flops. The drop kick to the chest was nice though.

Never understood why people go through the effort to comment on a sport they don't like, calling it boring of all things. Especially when the event has its own forum, so it's not even in the way in the Sports Bar. The worst part is that some of these people are baseball fans!!! I'm serious, baseball fans have the nerve to call Soccer boring, I mean, just wow.
Anyway, the final was good, the low score is usually normal for a final. I'm glad that Spain won though, not only did they deserve it but I did not care for Holland's physical approach.
Holland was clearly hoping to intimidate the "finesse" spaniards early in the game, but clearly that did not work out... even the jump kick to the rib cage wasn't enough.
That was a terrible spot the ref was put in, if he awarded the much deserved red card it would've ruined the final, so he held back and gave the yellow... although should've been a red, no one would've argued that I hope... well except for Robin or whatever his name is, that guy argues everything.
This was a great WC IMO, lots of good goals, exciting matches and heart breakers (Ghana anyone? WOW!!)

thanks Capn.. I totally ignore the haters.. I ignore their baseball threads, so it's all good...
The best game all tournament was probably Spain-Germany in the semifinal. That was the real final. Those were the two teams that really played to win, really played the game the right way. Not all this anti-futbol, rough-house crap.
People should definitely watch that game to see the best quality players and the best strategy. Last world cup winner Italy set the soccer world back a few years. it gave credence to the anti-futbol, ultra defensive, utilitarian, practical futbol. Hopefully this Spain win spurs on the creative, passing, possession, fluid brand of soccer around the world. Brasil especially should look in the mirror. Right now Uruguay plays a more attractive style. Argentina has more stylistic players but no strategy. They too need to look at Spain, but more for their tactics. Anyway, I really hope Brasil 2014 has Germany/Brasil/Argentina/Spain in the final four, all playing this beautiful attacking stylish flair type futbol.

I think Germany's youth showed up in the semi. You could see that they were almost kinda unsure of how to proceed. If they just played full steam ahead like they did before, they would've had a much better shot.. as it was they did not put much pressure on Spain and just waited for the counter attack. They had some minor opportunities but ultimately they didn't try to seize the moment, they just waited for the moment to come to them, and Spain is just too good with the ball for that to happen enough times.
I agree on HOlland, I really would've LOVED to have seen a Uruguay / Spain final, it would've been amazing I think... oh well, there's always next time :)
At least this wasn't the 1990 WC, that WC was unbearable, thank god 94 was a complete turnaround :)

Isn't it always the mega stars that miss in the PK shootout? Becham did also that I remember clearly... Platini missed in their PK shootout vs Brazil in 86 or 82 if I'm not mistaken....

After travelling overseas to witness this world cup, it is definitely just Americans who are just ignorant about soccer and say stupid ish. I choose to ignore them from now on. We have too many sports here for soccer to get big. Our loss is the world's gain (cue all the American bravado and machisimo ...)
Anyways, it was rough final but exciting. Watching it in a sports bar with fans from both teams was the way to watch it. Lots of screaming and yelling and finally a goal. Spain deserved to win no doubt. They play beautiful soccer but aren't aggressive enough in regards to shooting. They want to almost dribble the ball in the goal.
Great, great World Cup. South Africa did a great job and I think that some of the more exciting matches were Ghana vs. Uraguay, US vs. Slovenia, Nigeria vs. South Korea, and Brazil vs. Netherlands ...
