Is there any "key" to success in recruiting?

I play as Rutgers U. And my defense is constantly ranked #1 in the nation and offense near the bottom (Does 5 minute quarters affect this?).

Anyway, I have no problems recruiting top defensive players, but I go through HELL trying to recruit offensive playmakers.

I have not recruited a "blue chip" prospect for offense in 3 years (not because of lack of effort).

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds familiar. In my FSU dynasty I was just like you, tops in D, almost dead last in offense. Because I couldn't pass worth a damn, I wasn't getting interest from decent WR's or TE's. Worse, my existing WR's stunk, and I had no TE's left on the team after the second year. So I HAD to have replacements and wasn't getting them.

But, here's my complaint. The recruiting thing shows you where you have needs by position, but if you let the CPU handle the recruiting, it does an incredibly bad job of filling those needs. I kept ending up overloaded at spots I had zero need for, and even ended up with no TE's.

Needless to say I didn't save that class ;)

Now, I hate recruiting in real life, so I'm even less fond of it for this game and so having such crappy classes from the CPU made me try it manually...and while I got the positions filled a little better, the class still wasn't that great, especially in the WR's....my area of greatest need.

I ended up ditching the FSU dynasty for my created team, and luckily I have had better balance on offense. Not stellar, but upper 50% rather than dead last in all categories except rushing yards like I had with FSU. I'm only a couple of games into my first season, so I'll see how the recruiting goes for them in a bit.

recruiting is my favorite part about the game. here are some tips that i tend to use.

if your going for coaching philosophy and need recievers, before you finish your last game of the season, go into your coaching philosophy screen and change your sliders so that you pass more than you run. this really has no bearing on user controlled games since you call the plays. that should help you get qb's and WR

do the opposite if you need a running back

i always start with in state recruiting. majority of the time, those guys are interested in your school (if you were ranked high at the end of the season or won the NC). throw them the location line.

coach prestiege seems to work really well on olinemen and kickers

program prestiege works when a guy has say for instance UTEP, UCLA, and UGA as his teams of interest

after your first recruiting season, learn to recruit for the future. i always try to pick up at least one WR and 2 olinemen every year and maybe even a db or 2. you never know when you'll need them. plus you can red shirt them to give them an extra year.

hope this helps

Thank you for the response. I have't tried the slider trick, will do. I had one WR commit last season, with 78 ovr as a true FR, which isn't bad, but he is in fact my best receiver. So it is REALLY hard to getthe O stats up. But I got extremely lucky that the top TE in the nation was in-state, so I was able to get him, and so far in the 1st game he had 3 catches 68 yds and one TD. Yay for TE's.

Like I said, My defense is pretty much all freshmen/sophmore because I was able to recruit top-talent. But, that doesn't solve the O woes, my o-line is terrible, my QB is 78 ovr and wildly innacurate. My RB's are good though FB - HB both 90 and the backup HB is 82.

I think thats the same rating as my created team QB. But I guess my guy has better accuracy maybe, cause I'm damn sure hitting more passes with him - to much slower WR's no less - than I was able to do with any of the FSU QB's (Rix, Sexton or Lee). But man, my qb makes Drew Bledsoe look like an olympic sprinter.

Forgot to respond to your 5 minute quarter question earlier. I'd say yes. I switched from 6 minute quarters to 8 minute quarters and I think I get a few more possessions each game, which when combined with my increased passing success is getting me more yards. My QB isn't exactly burning it up, but getting ~250 yards passing a game vs the ~150 per game I was getting with FSU is nice....even though he has a LOT of negative rushing yards where my FSU qb's all had positive yards.

Did I mention he's really, really slow? :)

Hah, that is pretty funny. The QB I recruited this year is preeetty slow. I red-shirted him though, so I haven't experienced the lead-foot QB phenomena yet.

Yeah......... for recruiting always look for interested schools...... like for me i play with Wisc, so it the schools are something like Wisc/Minn/Ill or Wisc/Ill/NW ect something that is really close together and local, most likely his big pitch will be location, not always though, but for the most part yes. If they put like FSU,TX,USC ect big name colleges most likely prestiege is going to get them, or coach prestiege, that seems to get some of the big named players. If you play the pass vs run Coach Style is good for corners sometimes aswell. If you're a running team and you notice one of your recruits offensive linemen says Run blocking LT C G ect then throw in the Coach strat. Yes, instate are good way to start, usually unless im certain i know what pitch this player is going for, i hardly spend any points on recruits unless they're a blue chip because sometimes they sign regardless the first week. With the other players its probably best to just invest no more then 10 points until you find there pitch. oh yeah, if you are completely empty at a spot, i had no Te's and only ONE 2 star wanted to join, i threw in a week 5(Yes, last minute notice) To only 2 4 Star Tes who where at least 75% intrested in PT (Playing time) One of them bit, and he is a beast. :) Hope this helps some of ya ~+~.

If you want to pump up your offensive stats & rankings, schedule pasties. Nothing like beating Dartmouth 70-0 to help the O.
