View Full Version : What to run against Nickel Thunder Green?

I play against a friend who runs Nickel Thunder Green every play. I've had occasional success with the outside run, and I'll hit a deep pass every now and then. But he always gets pressure on my QB. And if I play him at his place I can't call the pass block hot route because of the crowd. If I do find a play that picks up both LB's it seems like one of his DE's will get free and get to my QB. Any help?

I normally attack the nickle green with the shotgun spread formation. When I pass I call the ply deep attack. I send the receiver in motion, when he reaches the A gap, I snap the ball. This prevents the lb from coming up that gap. Also it leaves the corner with one on one coverage. If u can get this off enough. He will have to re-evaluate his plans.

I use the Nickel Thunder Green as one of my bread and butter plays, but there are two easy ways to beat it that will always send me to another play.
First, I use this play often for 3 reasons:
1. If I manually adjust my LBs, at least one of them will get through the line 70% of the time.
2. If the offense is in shotgun I get a better pursuit angle at the QB.
3. If I have HFA and can make the QB signal the snap (leg lift), I can get an early start on my blitz.
Two easy ways to beat it:
1. Inside runs won't normally work against this play because there are more defenders on the line than there are O-blockers. You can occasionally get a good gap if your patient, but don't count on it unless you are in an ace-form. This play is man-only (God, I wish there was a zone version in the Nickel) so if you motion the receiver from the side that the Nickel back isn't lined up on, you should have a free shot at a sweep, toss or option to the vacated side. The linebackers will be going to the inside so, if they don't catch you earlier, in the pocket, they won't catch you at all. If you can get past the safety, expect some big gains. I don't count on the shotgun to do this for me unless I have a fast QB or unless I call an HB direct (away from the nickel).
2. The defense is blitzing 2 LBs to the inside and the nickel back is in man coverage, so a slant to the area vacated by the linebackers should be money. expect to be tackeled quickly by a corner, the nickel, or a safety, but 6-7 yards is still a good gain. I would recommend slanting the receiver from the side not covered by the nickel back then cutting upfield after the reception. If he beats his man to the spot and can juke the safety, there's nothing but open field ahead.
Really, I only run the NTG play when I can count on the offense lining up in the shotgun, which gives me the mismatch I want on the line and a clean route to the QB. If someone switches to the Ace or the I, this play just doesn't provide the best scenario for the defense anymore.

This is a very easy defense to beat. I run Shotgun Spread WR Under. Take the snap, drift slight to your right (the LB blitzing will get picked up by the OL). Throw the ball to L out of his break. He will be wide open. This plays should go for 6.
