What is your base Defense? What Defenses will you use through out a game?
2 or 3 formations or every formation?
I admit I need to expand my Defensive playbook. I usually use a 4-3 base and nickle on passing downs. in certain situations ill throw in a 4-2-5 or 4-4.

My base DE is the 3-3-5, but I like to throw in multiple looks from the 4-2-5, 4-4, 30 stack adj. from 3-4, 4-3, and Nickel. Although I do complain about 2005, the new defenses are one feature I love. My favorite plays to run are the zone DE's out of the 4-2-5 and 3-3-5. I love playing one of my freinds and using an all out blitz(for example) then setting up the same blitz look only to zone blitz or use a max zone. 4-4 mad robber is sweet to use. I like to audible down from the dime to 4-4 mad robber or 4-4 zone blitz.

3-3-5 Stack and the 3-4 with the 30 Stack adjustment. I've also been experimenting with some two man front alignments. This is a new trend you're seeing teams use frequently. Teams that use the 3-4 such as Michigan, New Mexico, and La Tech have used this look this past season.
I generally try to match my defensive scheme to the offensive personnel grouping. My defense is not very good and aside from a couple of core LBs, I don't have any standout players. As such, I try to play a lot of different bodies in a lot of different looks to keep guys fresh.
So, I generally play 4-4 against 12 personnel, Dime/3-3-5 against 10 or 00, 4-3 against 21, Nickel versus 11, etc. Basically, I try to match big on big and speed on speed. RBs = DL, TEs = LBs, WRs = DBs.
If I had more guys that really fit a scheme, I would stick to it. However, one of the problems with 2K5 is defensive alignments/adjustments made by the CPU versus various sets. The one that pops out in my head is 3-3-5 versus a 3x1 look from the offense. Without fail, the OLB widens to the same spot as the Dog Safety. Nobody would align like that in real life.
For as enjoyable as the game is, it makes me wonder if EA consults any football folks before writing their code.

For us non-football folks, can you translate the terminology you just used? What is 12 personnel, etc? 1 FB and 2 RB's?
3x1 is maybe 3 WR's & 1 RB?
Sorry. Offensive personnel groupings are often referred to by the number of backs and number of TEs. So, normal pro personnel (2 RB, 1 TE, 2 WR) would be 21. Four wide would be 10, etc.
3x1 refers to basically a set with 3 receivers to a side. This could be a trips look with 4-wide, or could even be an offset-I look with a WR, TE, and offset FB to the same side. This is compared to a 2x2 which would be a balanced look with 2 eligible receivers on either side of the football.
My fault. Should have explained better.

Certain teams call it differently than others. For us "21" personnel is two tightends and one back. 22 personnel would be two tightends and two backs, 11 personnel would be one tightend and one back, etc.
It's primarily used by defensive coaches when they discuss offensive personnel groupings with their players. For example against teams that use no huddle offenses you may see a defensive coach on the sideline with a card that has a number on it. It lets the defense know what offensive personnel is on the field.

Not your fault at all. I just wish I had played football in high school. Cept of course my high school didn't have any sports teams, so I got stuck on the quizbowl team instead :)
I went to FSU, so there was not much chance of me getting on the team there...so chess and strategic games club it was! :D
But, that strategy thing is why I like football X's and O's.

More good stuff. Thanks. I'm always looking to learn more about the real X's and O's of football.
I've seen those number cards you speak of, but always thought it was for the defensive alignment/play call.
