Preseason week 1

Cardinals at Vikings

A great game, real close until the 4th Qtr. Game balls to Djwill, M.Pharaoh and the HitMan. Great outside runs and some passes in the flat to Djwill. Pharaoh had a 5 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 FF and an INT, plus about 10 hurries you couldnt see in the stats. The Hitman besides having 7 tackles, 2 TFL, and 1 FF and Fumble Rec, made 2 great stops on 3rd down just before the 1st down line.

**besides the fumble which he lost, DJwill was great, Hijacker did well, but mostly up the middle, but vikings were putting 8 men in the box alot, which made it difficult to run inside.(Hijacker also take about an hour to get going to speed), M. Zukes got a 2pt conversion and added a 1 yrd TD, and made great blocks all game**

**good game for D.Kidd, the 2 drops were easy Td's but overall good game. Colt Dix was helpful, all his catches were clutch. theopacman only 1 drop, and his 1 rec was a 4th down catch that led to an eventuall TD**

**on D everyone pulled together by the 2nd half, and I already mentioned the great D, I swear Culpepper wasnt going to come up from a hit by Olson, but he did ....slowly**

I created all the players, names and stats(reasonable ones) given to me by the forum members, and I add them all to the same team on my PC, in franchise mode. I post the updates and screenshots here(for now :-> ) I sim some of the games, but try to play as many as I can.

Legs always wanted to be a free safety always roving for picks, but his size and lack of secondary-level speed led him to the linebacker corps.

If it weren't for his Ben Wallace like love of playing defense, he would have gone out for TE, and at times he will still line up as one.

The only thing he loves more than leaping to pick off a pass from a QB who never expected a 6'5" linebacker to have such long arms and such a high vertical is getting safeties! D-FENCE! D-FENCE!

A former varsity volleyball player who sprains his ankle at least twice a year, Legs always has both ankles taped. a lot.

Fairly geeky, Legs doesn't take part in much debauchery, but he is definitely one of the biggest jokers in the locker-room, playing practical jokes on anyone and everyone.

HiJacker is a lonely sole, he was neglected as a child and thus comes his desire to be the center of attention. Contrary to popular belief HiJacker is actually very famous from his time spent in NFL Europe, not due to football, but to his participation in a commercial for a revolutionary workout machine, commmonly knows in the US as the Blowflex.
HiJacker is often asking for the ball and more playing time. His college coaches got so fed up he was often sent to the school phyciatrist for routine checkups for a possible Napolian Dissorder (fear of being ingnored). In high school HiJacker had a decision to make, HB or defence. His speed made him a good canidate for saftey, but HiJacker felt like defence got no glory.
HiJacker is now married to three women (He is morman) and has 7 kids. His home is in Salt Lake City, in the shape of a football to attract attention.

a tough game, obviously the defending champs were no pushover, intercepting Jpar 4 times! But he more than made up for it with 438 yards and 2 td's. The problem is he was sacked 6 times and hurried a ton more. We need to work on the O-line and getting him some more time.

I cant really give the game ball to anyone since there was no real standouts, so well all share it for beating the world champs.\

We handled the Falcons this game, there was no challenge.

Zukes and Daddy, I TRIED!! but I could not get you guys in the end zone, i was 1st and goal at the 2 and i tried 3 diff FB dives, and I couldnt get you in. And I keep hitting daddy in the back of the head with passes!!! you need AWR!!!

Jpar, d.kidd and theopacman, dumb daddy had great games in the air.

On the D side, congrats, everyone one was great, but some came away with more stats than others.

I can only get the teams stats like you see on our site ONLY if I play the games, If I sim them, youll see the league leaders, team stats and leaders, but no game by game updates.......I can manually do them like M.pharaoh was, but I wont look like the 2 past weeks on my site. It only creates the reports for league and teams, not game by game, unless i manually play them.

guys/girls -> let me know if you want me to play out the games, or sim them

If I play the games, the updates come here less often, but you get ingame screenshots etc...and the great web interface, but the season may move along slowly....I'd still get the newspaper and awards screens if we sim though


on another note, Im going to increase the time on the games i play to bump up our stats a bit, we are a bit behind the league avg's on the D side of things.

On your simm games maybe tweak the aggressive and passing settings up on defense a bit to try and increase qb pressure and picks for the DB's, just a suggestion, and maybe run some 3-3-5 or 3-4 in 2nd and 3rd and longs.
PS, check to make sure I'm really on the field during these games, 16 tackles in 5 games, you probably are paying me to much if that is all the production I can get you. Sub me out to the third guy from the outside on Kick coverage so I can help a little

I was under the impression from the 2 times that I played it in my chise that I did not; I seem to think that I checked and verified that the progression that shows up after wildcard is just the same info as after week 17. This is where I was coming from. I've checked it again and again and I don't get the progression from Wild Card games. That's why I've always tried not to get this game. It's a waste IMO. If I do get it I run a 1 min qtr and get it overwith. Anyhow, I'm certain you don't get it on the box or on the PC. Not sure abt PS2 though.

The stats from the sim are balanced, but remeber your guys OVR stats are low, and I can rack up some high numbers if I play, and get cool screenshots, but week to week, they may seem uneven. Look at my player, what do i have 6 tackles? and I am simming the thing!

I notice that you have not changed any of the human sliders, and not many of the cpu ones. I have been playing some with my sliders trying to get reasonable stats. I am at work now, but I will check what I have mine set at.

Off hand I know for a fact that I boosted run blocking for both cpu and human by a fair amount (more for cpu than human I think), as well as a bit of pass block for human. I don't think I upped running ability for human, but I think I nudged it up for the cpu.

Running in 05 is close to being very good; compared to earlier ones, the fact that you can (and often need to) stay behind blockers who lead you up the field is virtually revolutionary! All "slow" players (O and D line and QBs) are still too slow, in particular for proper pulls and traps by the O line. I still find though that there are WAY too many blow ups in the back field because a linemen simply ignores his level 1 block and takes off after a safety, leaving a DT to paste your poor little HB uncontested. Since there are 5 O-linemen, and on any given run play it seems like they have a 10+% chance to do this, you're left with very few plays where none of the O-linemen screw up. The fact that this happens so consistently even with an O-line that is all 99s is a bit ridiculous...

on o its 90 agressive, 60run/40pass with 55/45 rb1/rb1

I don't think our players on offense have progressed well enough 2 benefit from a 90% agggressive offensive scheme. In the last chise the thing was JPar OVR was so high that even in games where I had 53 run 47 pass 60 aggr he still had monster sim games.

Unfortunately in the sim games DumbDaddy will see no action, zukes will always rush for negative yards.

By the way here is a play for zukes. If u recall he had 11 td catches in the old chise. Near the goalline, substitute your big backfield which puts him at the HB spot. Use any pass play that has the HB doing a flare route. Send him in motion and hike it right after he passes the tackle. VS man coverage he will have a bit of seperation. 1 step drop back and rip it 2 him. The catches might not get him 2 the Pro Bowl but u can get some nice screen shots of him scoring.

This was a crossing pattern with Kidd coming from left side, and theopacman from right. This screen is from the autoreplay because Madden himself went wild when he saw it. Kidd went onto score on this play because of the ferocious block of theopacman. This is in no way the usual from him, even with the hitstick he usually bounces off the opposing player.

i have it without that pic, BTW, that's NOT a sack. He ran in for a blitz on a quarter play, he tried to tackle pennington but he threw theopacman down to the ground like a rag doll( I have pics of him on the ground). Realhawker had to finsih him off( I have pics of that too)

**OK, don't flip out, but I simmed up to week 12 , but it didnt give me individual stats. You can check the website and see you total stats tho.**

I apologize for not playing the last game before the progression, but I will make it up to you all.

Starting this past game, I am bumping up to 7min qtrs. You can see the diff in the stats this game.

The reason the passing is so high is because i was trying to score quickly to get the ball back to the opp. so I could help the D stats for our guys. I will go back to running more and spreading the O out next games.

Elandil has great physical tools, played basketball and football in college. He has really good hands while playing point guard. Just like Charlie Ward he could play in NFL and NBA, but Elandil a California native passed on playing for the expansion team the Bobcats in Charlotte to play for the Arizona Cardinals. A former cornerback in USC, he's been moved to the Free Safety spot where is catching abilities is better suit for picking up some balls. ELandil hopes to make an impact for the Cards in his rookie season.

that's just great.....you know I am not doing too well right? How the hell am I gonna get a sack when I'm spent from your spin doctorettes?

also a note, since we play mostly in arizona, its hot, therefore anyone with sleeves won't see them unless we play somewhere cold. we played the vikings, and you could see them. I guess its good that the game doesnt make players wear sleeves in 100 degree climates, but if they are so accurate with the sleeves, they could have at least made you see hair choices, or change shoes! or maybe even short pants.

Realhawk, this stuff is awesome. The stats and pics blew me away. Can I get sigs for me D. Kidd and my son J. Olson. As for our personal stories I was a letterman in high school in wrestling, Football, Track and basketball one year. Made state in Track and Wrestling. Got 3rd in state in wrestling and 5th in the 100 and 1st in the 440 relay team. Made state in high jump but did not place, but could jump 6'1". This all translated well into football as I was the starting running back and was moved to the slot a lot because I could catch and jump for the ball. I also played strong safety on defense. My wrestling mentality got me in trouble more than a few times on the field. I also wrestled in college.

My son made all state as DE in Arizona 5A. He is as big and strong and fast as you have made him in the game. His coach moved him to LOLB for some passing downs as he is very fast. I have some great pics of him slamming QB's into the ground. I think the Tucson QB still hurts from being body slammed. Him and I being on the same team in the NFL is weird, however the story behind that (not real) is that he is the product of a love affair I had with my 6th grade teacher, you know I was very mature for my age back then. His mother had him in prison. Sort of like Culpepper in his real life story. He is very well adjusted with all he has been through, well, except for the weird license plate collection he has.

Fox Sports Reporter Brian Walker: Dennis, what was your gameplan this week.

Dennis Green: Well, Brian our plan was to focus on the run and force their defensive line to make plays. Obviously our plan worked as we were able to rush for 220+ yards and 5 rushing TD's.

Brian: What was your plan on defense this week? The lions O-line has been having a great year, were you worried they might try to run all day as well?

Dennis: I was hoping they would, we have dominated opponents running games this year and welcomed any attempt to get past our linebackers. We were more worried about Tai Streets and Roy Williams.

Brian: You were worried...but what did you do about it?

Dennis: Well early on Roy and Joey Harrington burned us for a long TD pass. We were playing very agressivly on D, and sending our SS, Mighty P. on blitzes often in the 1st half. I spoke with our corners on the sideline, I told them to play their men tight, hit them on the line, and try to give time for Hobbs,hitman and Mighty P. to get to Joey. I also had Legs and Elandil playing a deep zone coverage to back up GT and skin.

Brian: I would have to say despite your efforts the Lions had a great day in the air regardless.

Dennis: I'll give the Lions that they have a great pair of wideouts. But we had 4 forced fumbles , one leading to a TD and 2 INT, plus we outscored them 5-0 on the ground. They had the long ball, but didnt have the punch to put it in the Endzone.

Brian: Any players that really made an impact this week?

Dennis: I'm glad you asked, On D, Mighty P. had a monster game, 15 tackles, 1 sack and a forced fumble and recovery. Djwill obviously had a great game with 168 yards and 4 Td's.

Dennis: No Brian, I didnt hear that, but congrats to him, he earned it. I have to get back to Phoenix now Brian, It was nice talking to you.

I mean, you are blocking nicely for our HB's, you should have seen yourself in the Ground attack camp, awesome. I would think you would get more pancakes, but I find Djwill pushing you outta the way to get around you and up the field.

But when it comes to you actually holding the ball, or trying to get into the flat to catch a pass, it's painful. I should have forced some SPD and ACC on you.

I will dedicate an entire half to you if we clinch the division. Then we will celebrate in the palace that night if you get more than 2 TD's

Coach Green: ...also I want to congratulate Jpar on a fine day and now I turn over the mike to him.

*camera's flashing*

Jpar: Thanks, coach. It was just an amazing day. Every single player on our offense clicked. I'm not known to be cocky but I was in a zone today.

ABC sports reporter: Every single receiver, the tight end, fullback and both halfbacks got recieving touchdowns today. How did you spread it out so evenly, and were you keeping track of who scored in your head?

Jpar: Well I was sharing a drink with coach green this past week, and we talked about making sure everyone gets a chance to score. He told me it would improve morale, and lead to an even higher scoring game. He was right. I was trying to keep track, but as you can see, theopacman got 2, so I wasn't perfect.

ABC: Perfect? You had a 133 passer rating and a NFL record 8 Touchdowns with no interceptions. I call that a perfect day.

Phoenix Times: Jpar, is there anyone you would single out as the biggest help for you today?

Jpar: Yes, I would have to go with Colt Dix, we havent connected on that many passes this year, but he really came through today, especially on 3rd and 4th down. A nod to Mike Zukes for blocking well for our Halfbacks, and his first TD of the year.

Phoenix times: Can you tell us where you had that drink with Coach Green?

Jpar: Well that's private but I will tell you I appreciate the conversation we had.

Phoenix times: Is it true that some of your players carry AND drink from a flask during the game?

Jpar: That's absolutely false, next question please...

Fox sports: As always, great game Mighty, who do you think had the biggest game on defense today?

MP: Thanks, dawg. Well besides your truly, I would have to say that I'm split between Hitman and Skinzone, Hitman had 10 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 4 defelctions. On the other hand Skin had 6 tackles and interception and 4 deflections.

Fox sports: Mighty, Last week Coach Green made a comment that your run D was impenetrable. This week you allowed 90 yards and a TD on the ground.

MP: Yo, We played very agressively, and Kevin slipped passed us once for 55 yards, if you take away that one run, he only had about 30 yards for the game.

Associated Press: Mighty, your defensive line has one of the lowest stat lines in the league, are you guys working together in the locker room to help them out.

MP: Well, If anyones working together, its Realhawker. Hes the veteran of the defensive line, and our team. He has a very young set of lineman, including a 19 year old rookie. this is most of our first years, and we are just trying to win and get settled. I dont think anyone is too worried about stat lines if we keep having games like today, plus look at the 19 year old stats today...

AHH! DJWILL is taking over the HB race. He has 918 yards for the season and I am stuck at 729!! We are tied with 11 TDs each but I have a longer "long" run. Both have 2 fumbles, hes slautering me in average yards per run, I won't even humiliate myself enough to say th numbers. But it aint your fault, I get the ball more than he does, 230 att to 199 att.

I know I said I'd post my sliders, I just keep forget to take note of them when I'm at home! (sorry! :( ) . To top it off I won't have a chance to post them until after christmas now as I'll be away from home...

Suffice it to say that I bumped both CPU and Human run blocking up to ~70/65. Experimentation is the way to go, I find that I have it fairly well balanced for me, but the cpu still does terrible running, so I'll have to try to boost him a bit...

In any case, I noticed a comment about pushing past the FB coming out of the backfield. As I mentioned in another post at some point, I actually prefer my FBs slowish but strong, and I always hold cover-ball and follow my FB until he makes a block to spring me. In '05, it is SO much better to hold back and follow your blockers than in previous games. It's like the play McGinest made a couple weeks back when he grabbed Gay after the interception to slow him down so he could block for him (and in doing so sprung him for a TD instead of an immediate tackle...)

This is a bit off topic, but I just got a 23 inch apple HD display for my PC. It is ****ing awesome. The reso is 1920x1200, madden plays awesome at 1600x1200

I tried 3 ways, creating you as free agent and then triying to sign you, didnt work, you werent in free agents list, eveon though theres ony one roster.

I also tried creating you straight to the cardinals, didnt work either

I also tried simming our season, just to test, alll the way through to next season, with you as free agent, and i still couldnt find you, you were'nt signed by another team either. Perhaps we can find a draft editor, and I can make you a "rookie" in some way.

you intercepted in the end zone, and ran to about the 10 yard line, you had such a head start, that i didnt see any defensemen until about the 20, then they got you. Slow!!!! All that matters is you got the INT, and saved an opp. TD

Monday Interview with Coach Green

Jake: I want to first thank you Coach Green, for giving us your time this week

Green: Your welcome, we are enjoying the holidays and preparing for the playoffs.

Jake: Can you quickly define for us what your gameplan was for today?

Green: Yes, run the ball, control the clock, play conservative defense, work hard on stopping the ball in the air, don't give up any big plays.

Jake: I see you mentioned stopping the passing game, has this been a problem for your team?

Green: I wouldn't call it a problem, since we are winning, but we have been giving up a lot of passing yards this year. We shut down opponents running games, but we are having some trouble with opposing recievers.

Jake: Can you elaborate on how you tried to address that problem against the seahawks?

Green: Well besides trying to match up against the large passing threat seattle has in hasselbeck, we tried to play more conservatively than usual. We often play a high risk defensive scheme that tries to rush the quarterback and force bad throws, or gets the sack. We swtiched from our usual 4-3 defense and went with cover 2.

Jake: But seattle still had 382 yards and 2 td's in the air. Perhaps there is still something needed to be done?

Green: Don't forget we had 5 interceptions and one for a touchdown return.
The plays we are getting beat on is across the middle, even in our dime and quarter defenses. I think our problem is lack of depth at cornerback, and our defensive line is not putting enough pressure on opposing quartebacks. Our two starting cornerbacks GT and Skin, do a great job, but they cant cover everyone in a 4 or 5 wide reciever set. And our defensive line does a great job against the run, and also does well when blitzing with our linebackers, but on their own, they just dont' penetrate quick enough.

Jake: How are you going to address these issues?

Green: Well in the offseason, we are going to see if we can pick up a rookie corneback from the draft. I've had my scouts make it one of their top priorities. If we cannot find anyone suitable, we may pick up a mid level veteran. As far as the defensive line is concerned, I spoke with RealHawker, and discussed some options. We may mix up some of the player's positions, and try to rush through the middle more.

Jake: Your running back Djwill had another great game, rushing for 251 yards and 3 Touchdowns. He is 3rd in the league in total yards and 1st in rushing touchdowns. Care to comment on your rookie halfback's success?

Green: DJ is a great young running back. He is very quick, and is rapidly picking up the more advanced aspects of the postion. He is becoming better at breaking tackles, and beating his defenders 1 on 1. He is also becoming more aware of where his defenders are and waiting for his blocks. We look forward to great things from him.

Jake: You've locked your division, but the Vikings have clinched the conference, do you see them as your biggest roadblock on your journey to the superbowl?

Green: Yes, they are on a 7 game winning streak, they have the highest points for after us, and the lowest poitns against in the league. We also have not played them this year beside the pre-season, so we are not totally sure what to expect. Our players will be watching lots of film on this minnesota team.

Jake: The Pro Bowl selections are in and you have 9 players going to Hawaii this year. Can you go over each player with me?

Green: Sure, where do you want to start?

Jake: First, lets talk about Jpar, he will be the starting quartback this year.

Green: What more can be said, he is a sure-fire MVP canidate, rookie of the year candidate, and leads the league in passer rating, yards and touchdowns. Great season.

Jake: How about Djwill, he came in ranked 2nd in voting for Halfback?

Green: Another fine rookie, having a great 2nd half of the season. Can't wait to see what he can do next year.

Jake: You have 3 wide receivers here...D.Kidd is 1st, followed by Theo in 4th and Colt in 5th.

Green: Jpar could not have gotten his achivements this year without a great recieving core. Kidd has been outstanding, and theo has been great since becoming the 3rd wideout on our team, after starting as just our kick returner. You know he wasn't even supposed to play football.

Jake: Amazing, On the defensive side of thigns, you've got Hitman as the starting middle linebacker, and Mighty Pharaoh as the starting Strong Safety.

Green: We owe alot to these two, they are clearly the best tacklers on our team, and if hitman isnt pummeling the runner, then Mighty can't be far behind with his hit stick ready to rock the snot box of any would be scorer. Mighty is clearly a leader on the field, even in his first year. Take last game for example against the rams, Steven jackson catches a lateral pass in the left side flat from the quarterback... he breaks 1, 2 then 3 of players open field tackles in a row. Mighty came from all the way on the other side of the field to help out and knock the player out before he could pass the 1st down marker.

Jake: Rounding it out you have Skinzone and GT and 1st and 3rd cornerbacks respectively.

Green: Wel Jake, those two lead the leauge in deflections, and are right up there in interceptions too. They are also always ready to make a play on the run as well.

Jake: That about wraps it up for today, thank you for your time Coach Green
