I play on Xbox Live. Im ranked in the 2000-4000 range depending on if im on a winning streak or losing streak. The highest I have been is 600. For the most part I dont lose to people who play straight up. I mainly lose to people who use Texas or any other team who primarily goes to the deep bomb. Sometimes Im on and stop the deep bomb all day, but some games I blow it no matter how hard I try.

Anyways...
4-2-5 and 3-3-5 FS spy is what I use to stop it. For the most part I dont have troubles, but some days I do.

I have had better luck using coverage to stop it than using blitzes, because blitzes make it all too easy.

questions...
What is the best way to stop the bomb/ user catch with the DB?
Where do I position the DB compaired to the ball marker and the reciever?
What should I press? User big hit, dive, or user strip, or intercept?

any other tips in the science of stopping the long bomb would be appreciated.

Best way to stop deep routes is man 2 deep defenses. I believe every formation has a version of it...

This formation will double any deep threats with the coverman and a safety backup. Don't press coverage if your safeties are prone to bite on play action. Don't use zone 2 deeps as it sometimes leave your safety 1 on 1 against the receiver.

Couple of weaknesses to this defense:
1. Anything up the seam is 1 on 1 covered if the two safeties are split to the outside.
2. Scrambling QB's can have a field day as defenders will have their backs turned. There is a 3-4 variation with a spy but then you only have 3 pass rushers.

Hope this helps.

couple thinigs for you to try here

instead of going for the pick, swat the ball away. eventually after enough swat's you'll bat it up so your db's will get the pick. every now and then they'll pick it off one handed when you use teh swat ball button. it's far safer than the catch button

i try to posistion my self just in front of the circle. takes timing to swat it correctly though

get pressure. the only bad thing about the 4-2-5 and 3-3-5 SS spy is that there isn't any pressure. try mixing things up outta these two sets by sending pressure every once in a while. try to force your opponent into 3rd an long situations. nickle thunder green is an awesome play if your corners can stand up to the challenge

...Well I agree with DJ on this one....you have to get pressure otherwise the deep bomb will eat you up (a good player with time to find the open man is a bad situation to be in).....and its better to go for the swat or the big hit with the CB/FS/SS....going for the pick is sometimes all or nothin in this game..

I remember trying to use the swat against the CPU one game and missing. I would then do a replay and saw multiple times that the ball would go right thru the middle of the defenders hand so I quit using it.... but maybe I'll give it another shot and try to refine my pass coverage abilities.

i use strafe and big hit to stop lobs its tooo much fun destroying those helpless wide receivers cover 2 man safety over top big hit use circle as launch pad l2 will also get u a pick if timed right but i like it because it makes dbs attack the ball instead of standing still like with triangle i only use swat if im burnt or out of position.

If u can, u must do a man version. DON'T do zone, unless it is cover 4. U will get burn between the gap... I always wait to c if the coverage is cover 2 zone. Then I attack the safety down field. Of course I have become so much more dangerous now that I have learn to lead the receiver. As long as I keep the ball in ply, I can come up with most of the catches....

I remember thinking this to myself when I first started to play online. How do you stop the bomb? One thing that really has helped me has been by using the practice feature and by playing single coverage defense. After you select this type of defense you should have the computer run a deep passing play and practice off of this.
But another way you might be able to stop this is to have at least 1 guy deep to where you can get to the "receiving circle" rather quickly. If you time it just right you can lay a massive big hit on the receiver and he most likely will not catch the ball, and thereafter since composure can be altered.
Another approach is to get in front of the receiver while he is running to the ball and slow your speed down. This strategy often draws a pass interference against you but when I do it online (if your at home it helps) you won't draw a penalty.

Well, i hope a little of that can help u with ur online game. These tips may not be the best strategy but have worked for me. Good luck!!!!!!

I appreciate your help guys. I was a big fan nickle zone cover 3 until I started playing online. I now exclusively play with man coverage. I only use zone if it is a zone blitz. If I am using a man man coverage I often use the DB that is covering the HB or FB to manually blitz if neither of them are going out in a route. Im not good enough with the strafe button to start using it. Ill try the swat button more now. The last few games i played against "bombers" I shut them down, only getting beat when it was my fault. The dive and big hit buttons have been working well. Ill try to work in the swat next time I play.

a good timed strip or big hit mixes it up a bit too
