I was at like the 3 yard line with a nice lead on this guy and I missed the FG on purpose so he would have to go about 90 yards for a score... this was late in the game and he needed 2 scores I believe... thing is when i missed the FG it gave him the ball on the 20 yard line... is that the rules in college football? If it is I guess I just didn't know but I thought it was kinda odd.

Not sure about the rule, but wouldn't it have made more sense to just go for it? If you score its over, if not, so what? Unless you were playing online like in a league or something... It isn't a very straight approach but I think it makes more sense then missing a FG on purpose.

I couldn't agree more! I mean take the points and give up a possible 10yds of field position on the kick-off. With everyone throwing deep balls left and right it doesn't really matter where the O takes over anyway!!

I go for it alot inside the 5. I know it may be a little evil to say this, but there is a major slowdown inside the 20 and my thoughts are that they arent gonna get it past the 20 even if I dont get it. If I'm only up by a score or something like that, Ill definately kick it. I wouldve jsut kicked it in your situation for sportmanship, but I dont think it really matters.

Yea I know I should have gone for it but the guy was getting pissed with me on the mic and the last thing I wanted was for him to quit because I ran the score up... I wasn't in fear of losing the game. I just wanted to know what the ruling on that is cause even if it is marked where the kick is made from it wouldn't have been the 20 yardline.

If the kick is missed, the ball should be placed at the spot where the holder was holding the ball. If its a 32 yard attempt and you miss, the ball should be placed at the 22 yard line.

You should have just taken the FG 3pts > field position

But the rule is that if you are on the 3 yard line and miss they get the ball on the 3.

Im not so sure about that. If you are on the 3, then the placement of the ball on the kick should be around the 10 yard line, which is where it should be spotted when the other team takes over after a miss. That's how Ive always seen it done anyways.

If you miss a field goal the ball goes to where you snapped it from...............I dont go and read the rulebooks every year though so I guess I could be wrong............

Ahh I went for a little search and found this. Learn something new every day.

FIELD GOAL

1. All field goals attempted (kicker) and missed from beyond the 20-yard line will result in the defensive team taking possession of the ball at the spot of the kick. On any field goal attempted and missed where the spot of the kick is on or inside the 20-yard line, ball will revert to defensive team at the 20-yard line.

In the NFL, you take over from where the holder was (7 yards back). In college, you take over at the original LOS. If either spot is inside the 20 yardline, you take over at the 20.

Juggalo,
Why didn't you just kneel on it if you were intentionally trying to miss the FG anyway?

To be quite honest I wanted a saftey on the guy knowing he would go shotgun from what I thought would be the 3 or 10 yard line...

I am gonna have to say bad form. take the FB dive lay down on the one and sack him. If someone shanked a FG on me on purpose id be more pissed.
