well i think its the power spread offense might have that wrong, but ive been running into players that use the Shotgun formations everytime and they will Run and Pass out of it 50/50 ratio or close to it.

Whats the best D formations to stop this type of offense? any select plays? i tried using 4-3 (my base D usually) but i couldnt do much with it against this O, then switched to DIME and that did alright against the pass but would get burned on the runs.

ANY help would be great here, thanks guys!

i use 3-4 cover 3 shift lbs to wide side and bring safety up to lb depth (the safety that is assigned to play shallow. sometimes crash line to one side or other...

I like to run the 4-2-5 and the 3-3-5 against the power spread, as they give you a ballance against the run and the pass. Most guys that are solid with the power spread will audible to a run everytime they see you in a Dime defense.
The 4-2-5 and the 3-3-5 are particularly effective against the spread option attack, because you can match speed on speed pretty well. I don't like running 3-4s against the power spread because a slow backer can be the death of you against the intermediate passing attack.

what kind of plays did you run out of those formations that worked against both run/pass?

The 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 are truly your best bets.

I would lean to the 3-3-5 but that is well known, I don't play a ton online though.

run the 335 and the 425 on me if you want ................... my name isnt user catch for nothing and unless you get immediate pressure you are asking for trouble using on of these formations as your base... i know any d can be used if done correctly but there are too many holes downfield in these defenses to try and stop shotgun with

you would be better off callin 4-3 cover 4 or 3 than lining up in the 335 or 425 unless you are more concerned with the run...

this is why i use 3-4 bring safety up and patrol with the safety with the backers shifted to wide side it works try it........

at least this is my experience online......

It depends on what kind of QB I'm seeing, if they're an option guy, then I stay in any of the 3-3-5 spy-zone coverages, which insures that my LBs and DBs don't have they're backs turned if the QB breaks into the perimeter. Against pocket passers, I run a ton of blitzes out of zone and man ds ds. Here are a few I like-

1. 3-3-5 Monster 2
2. 3-3-5 Crash 3
3. 4-2-5 Monster 2
4, 3-3-5 Zone Blitz-SS Rush
5 .3-3-5 Zone Blitz
6. 3-3-5 Storm Red (Red Zone only)
7. 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 Middle Blitz (NO ABing)
8. 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 Pinch Blitz

for these plays you are using, do they work well against pass and run, or do you try and guess what they are going to do and pick a certain play for that situation?

I run the zone blitzes all game long, they're effective against the run and pass. If you're running the 3-3-5, you're going to have to bring some blitzes in most down and distance situations, you just can't get a decent rush with three players. However, I do like to bail eight into coverage against speed options, tyhe extra support on the perimeter will help you contain. With a 4-2-5 I still blitz, but not as much as I would with the 3-3-5. I save the break-out man-man blitzes for certain long yardage situations. I like the middle blitzes, but I only run them a few times a game, usually in make-or-break passing situations. Just don't try and run them against option QBs, you're going to get burned.
The reason people run these fronts is because you get extra speed with the extra safeties. This allows you to keep six in the box, while still defending the pass fairly well. Take advantage of the speed at those safety slot, when they come free off the edge they're gonna cause problems.
