View Full Version : Relationship between BAD PR blocking and punt distance?

I got bored today so I decided to look into the whole horrible punt blocking issue. I've been able to successfully return a punt for yardage maybe once every 5 or so games. So I went into practice mode and this is what I found:

First, I punt the ball as high and with as much power as I can possibly go. Result? MAYBE 1-2 guys that block someone. ALWAYS at least 4-5 guys standing there looking at me.

Next, I punt the way it's defaulted at. First, with half power. Same results as if I punted it high. Next with full power. EVERYONE blocks. Not necessarily very well, but I'd at least be able to run a few for yardage.

Lastly, I punt with it all the way down. Half power, same as punting it high. Full power, I can definitely get 10-20 yard returns consistantly

So to test this out, I went into practice mode again with the best punter in the game (Raiders) who has 99 OVR 97 KPW 90 KAC vs my return team. I noticed that the computer sometimes would boot it long where I could definitely get a return but sometimes would punt it shorter resulting my teammates looking at me while I caught the ball

Next I found the team with the worst punter in the game (Browns) who has 67 OVR 84 KPW 83 KAC. With him, I was able to return about 1 in 20 punts and on all but about 3 of these punts I had my guys stand there looking at me because the punter didn't have any distance on his punts.

Next I went into the A.I. and turned up the CPU punt length 3-4 notches. Then I was able to return about 5 in 20 punts with a lot less times when my players would just stand there looking at me. This can be corrected by bumping up accuracy a bit as well.

So from what I've seen so far, it seems that the distance of the punt has a great impact on what kind of blocking you'll get. I plan on raising the CPU kick power and accuracy a bit in my Franchise so hopefully my punt return man can be more than just a glorified ball catcher . If anyone would like to test this on their own and give input into this as well that would be great.

Go into the user control panel and find "avatars" or something like that. Should get a whole bunch of options

I put my return team on the field and audible to a defensive blitz play, just blitzing my outside linebackers. Then I bring back my returner to recieve the punt. Most of the time I get pretty good yardage.

i've found that if you do a punt block you get more time to return punts, although there are not blockers at least you pick up a couple yards.
