Isn't this an illegal formation? Does EA know so little about football that they include a formation which would result in a penalty?

EA doesn't know the rule book...
BUT IN THIS CASE THIS IS A LEGAL FORMATION. :)
The rule is you must have a Minimum of 7 players on the line of scrimage. This formation qualifies.
Unbalanced formations are a tremendous challange for a defense.

I thought that you cannot have an ineligible receiver on the end of the line? The left tackle would have to be eligible in this formation.

Assuming you are referring to the weakside tackle, He's only an inelgible receiver if he goes out for a pass, but he can be an elgible if he has an elgible # (a number not between 50 and 79). The TE in this formation is also inelgible (because he is not the end man and is on the line of scrimmage) however you can break the rules however and make him go out for a pass. ;)

Yeah. I guess it's not an "illegal formation" but having that inside TE catch passes is extremely illegal. Thus I think EA should still be taken to task for this.

We'll believe me I'm more than willing to take EA to task for not following the rules (IE HFA as it is implemented) for a lot of things.
In this case though, you can actually motion the TE back to a elgible position, and they don't have any plays in the playbook that actually send this receiver out on a pass when he is in the inelgible position.
College football has seen a lot of great unbalanced formations. I would love to see more of them or at least have the chance to put them in the game.
The old single wing:
X.X.C.X.X.PT.TE
..........BB............FL
...HB..QB
Or this crazy thing Bud Wilkinson used:
C.X.X.X.X.PT.TE
QB....................FL
..................FB
.........TB
I do agree though the game could benefit from the programers actually knowing the rules.

One thing that I hate about this is that even though the TE is an ineligible receiver, the defense still regards him as though he was, in terms of putting a man on him in coverage.

Checkout the Miami Hurricanes. The I Form Y Trips is one of their base formations. They used that formation quite a bit vs Clemson a few weeks ago.

I played around with this and Weak Y Trips for a bit. As mentioned, you can hot route the TE to a pass route, so be glad the defense covers him.
This would be a more effective formation if either the TE was replaced with an OL straight out, or if you had a package option to put one in...EA of course didn't give us either.

At the high school I coach for, we have an unbalanced formation in similar to Y-trips, but its set up in a way that allows for the maximum number of eligible recievers. Here's how we do it; switch the TE on the trips side with the backside tackle, therefore he isn't covered up and is eligible. Here's the form:
Te G C G T T.................X
.........Q...................................Z
.........F
.........H
As you can see the TE is eligible and the trips side has heavy running potential. We play our two best lineman on the overload side, so the running game to that side is solid. Our HB this year is leading the state in rushing and a lot of his success has to do with this formation. If the D overplays the trips side, you can hit'em hard on the backside. By motioning the H or F around you can set up some seriously nasty mismatches:
......................Te G C G T T...................X
..............................Q........F.......... .Z
...............................H
......................................OR.......... ..................................
........................Te G C G T T....................X
................................Q................H .......Z
................................F
EA needs to get their heads out of their asses and set this formation up; there's a ton of teams running variations of it.

Would be something like this...:
...................S................S
CB...DB................LB...............DB...CB... ...
...............DE....DT...DT....DE
........QE.........QG.C.PG.QT.PT.........PE
.....1.........................................2
....................HB.QB
This is acutally a Spread Unbalanced Line Single Wing. You can run almost all the running plays of a traditional power spread and all the passing. While it looks weak to the short side, defense that try to overload the weakside can get flanked to the strong side.
Getting Awn would love this formation a HB Direct with the QB leading (would look a little like the shotgun bunch play but its more of a sweep) is a BASE play in this formation. The QB is more a traditional option type but because of the spread formation his arm can't be looked either.
Now toss in some motion, shifts and full speed handoffs to the 1 or 2 backs, or even your basic QB read play. What a hoot! The strength of it all though is that unbalanced line and the adjustment it forces defenses to make.

COG, we included a formation similar to that in our wishlist doc. It's basically an unbalanced spread formation.
..........................Y.G.C.G.T.T............. ....A
...X.............................................. ..................Z
................................Q
...................................H
I'd like to run the speed option to the double tackle side with H. Also, motion X to the backfield and run the triple option to that side with X being the pitch man.
..........................Y.G.C.G.T.T............. ....A
.................................................. ...................Z

Hmmm curious... those would be quite workable in my opinion... the only concern that I have is the way the Q and H are aligned (looks like old Madden play editor limitation stuff... ugh :( ) Also if there is going to be a speed option in this formation it would be better run to the weak side (HB DIRECT OPTION???).
Any chance that we could shift the Y out?
...............Y<<<<<Y.G.C.G.T.T.................A

Unbalanced shotgun and no stupid pass routes... all I have to say to that is Muuuuuuuuhhhhhhhahahahahahaha that would be 2 COOL :D :D

Heck I'd settle for your basic Swinging Gate in the Special Teams Section:
....TE.T.G.G.T...................C
...WB............................................. .....WB
.........................................PH...
....................................K
How many teams line up in this formation before kicking the Extra Point? It would be perfect!

Texas A&M used a similar formation and motion against Clemson. They motoned X to the backfield and ran the triple option to the double tackle side with X being the pitchman. The interestingl part was that once X received the pitch he threw a pass to A on a corner route.

The Steelers have one called "Pittsburgh Right" where, ironically, Y lines up left:

LOL! sorry about that...one too many O lineman...it should look like this:

Now this would drive people nuts especially if its put into Online play... but how about throwing in Shifting.
Watching Art Briles Houston Teams the last couple of years I've seen them throw out a wacky formation like Broncos
...........FS.......SS
...CB....W......M..........S.............CB
...........DE....DT...DT..DE
............Y..O..O..O..O..O...............
..........Z........Q.........................X
.................................................
...............F.................................
....................H............................
The defense see it and adjust, then the Cougar's SHIFT causing defensive havoc....
.............Y..O..O..O..O..O..................... ....X
Z<<<<<Z........Q.................H........F........X
.....................................^...........^
...............F>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
....................H>>>>>>>>>
And it causes somebody to become uncovered (usually the Y) and open for a quick dump pass that picks up 5 yards or can go for a TD (I've seen Briles put a fast WR at the Y position)
You spend all week teaching your kids the rules for dealing with wacky formations and then people go to a wacky formation and start SHIFTING out of them. It drives Real-life DC's crazy! Imagine what it would do to the cpu or a human opponent.
