I need some advice on what to do here. I'm in the off-season, and Daunte Culpepper's contract is set to expire. The contract he wants, even after lots of re-working, is huge. I would be able to afford it, but I'd have less than five million in cap room, which leaves me no room to make any trades or signings, which I do usually every year. (That's how the Patriots made their dynasty, and it works.) However, If I cut Culpepper, it'll lower the morale of my entire team significantly because he's an Icon, has been a team captain and pro bowler every year, and was the MVP the first year. I went out and drafted a QB (James Burnsides, kinda like that name) who's overall is 84 and he's 22.

Now, should I resign Daunte or cut him and let Burnsides take over, and deal with the morale loss?

Have you thought about designating him as your "Franchise Player"?

Yeah, I tried that. Around 13 million, which would still leave me with only 6-7 million in cap room.

if you tag him you can trade him w/o no penalty and preferably get someone who just signed a long term deal, which you can trade him later with no cap hit :)
and then youd have 19mil in cap space
and 84 is good for a 22yr old qb he'll progress nicely

Depends. You wanna win now? Make the deal. There are ways to shave off top at other positions (look for high ratings and low bonuses and make a trade for lower contracts). QB is most important position.. unless you play a lot of games on your own (in which a shi**y QB can be good).

Okay, I released Culpepper. My morale took a big hit, but Burnsides progressed up to a 87, and played nicely in the opener (I'm simming). I think it was a good decision, especially since I signed Burnsides to a six-year deal.

just wondering. Who signed him? And I know i posted this in some other thread but at the end of the season don't use any of your money from ur OWNER MODE save it by just passing up the spending on the stadium upgtrades and all that. U don't need this if u had a good season and had good attendance. After u saved it goes straight to ur CAP. Every season I had Cap problems until I discovered this. :)

The Lions picked him up. And are you serious about that Owner Mode thing? Because with increasing ticket prices and the advertising glitch, I can usually make around $80 million a year.

If I understand you, you're saying that whatever profit you make one year that isn't spent on stadium upgrades or other expenses is added to your salary cap the following year?

If that's what you're saying, you're mistaken. The salary cap is the same for every team and is based on a percentage of the league's income the previous year. (Actually, in Madden it may just increase by a percentage each year, I'm not sure). But your salary cap is not connected to your profit. The salary cap is simply a cap that the league puts on your player salaries. This cap is then adjusted by any cap penalties that you incur (from trading or releasing players).

It's purely a coincidence if you stopped having cap problems the same year as you stopped spending your profits in the offseason.

Well I'm not sure if all of it goes to the salary cap but a good amount does. And I havent tryed it in 06 becuase I'm a online player but started a franchise recently. But my friend just finished a season and I'll asked him if and how much went to his cap.

I could just pile on to those who already told you that you're wrong to believe this, but I'll make a suggestion for an exercise for you to do that is much better than relying on a second hand report based on a subjective misimpression.

1. Start a 'chise. Use a good team that will make lots of money without you doing anything with it. Make a note of the initial cap.

2. Skip camp and everything else that requires your input. Just sim the whole season through to the end.

3. Save an extra copy of the 'chise file.

4. Now, on your first file, spend all your money and see what your new cap is.

5. On your second file, spend no money and see what your new cap is.

Compare the two. What is the result?

IMO....

I think Daunte Culpepper is the best QB in the game, for the 2nd year. I would keep him at all costs.

he has great size, hes only a bit slower than mcnabb, avoids tackles well, and is rarely injured. he also has good AWR and if he was on the cover of the game would probably be rated higher. He could use a hair of THA, but thats easily fixed.

I dont see getting much better than him and he still has 5-6 years left in him.

It's your chise though.

Yea his break tackle is in the 70+. That A LOT for a QB. He is good I like him.

I really wonder why you cut him though? You could have easily tagged him, then shipped him off. A QB like Dante can bring you just about anything you could ever want on the market...
