So,I'm reviewing the bowl games and I'm curious who is playing in the National Championship Game.... A team from the SEC with a reptile for their mascot is playing....BUT wait I thought... this team wasn't even in their conference championship game...it was two other teams.

I thought you couldn't be in the BCS title game unless you had WON your conference? How is it possible that a team that actually finishes 4th in their conference can play in the NC game?

The BCS is bad enough but if EA is SCREWING it up even more its darn near intolerable... Someone please tell me I have this all wrong!!!

Actually, there is no rule against playing in the national title game without having won your conference. Twice teams who didnt win the conference championship game have played in the BCS Title game. Nebraska did it first in 2001 (lost to Miami in the Rose Bowl after not even making it to the Big 12 Championship), and the Oklahoma in 2003 (Lost to LSU in the Sugar Bowl after they got drilled by Kansas State in the Big 12 Title Game).

This happened to me a lot in '05. Playing as Auburn, I've played LSU for the NC twice. Note that we are both in SEC West. So basically, LSU didn't even have to play in the SEC championship game. In other words, there's practically no threat to them playing in the NC game as long as they go undefeated when championship week comes around and they're at least #2 in BCS. Whereas my tigers, will have to play the winner of the SEC East and win to play in NC game. Unfair but thats how the system works.

I think you got the idea, COG, that teams must win the conference to play in NC is because of the media saying that after the games that Jeremy mentioned. And I wholeheartedly agree with that idea. How can you play for #1 in the country if your not even #1 in your conference?

I did the same thing as Phrozzy: Playing as TN I played FL in the national title game. Not only are they in the same division as TN, FL lost to TN in the regular season AND lost one other game and still got to the national title game. The BCS is messed up even in the playstation game. Just goes to show how good EA was at simulating real life.

Thank you Gentlemen... I guess I thought it was exactly because of the Oklahoma issue in 2003 that they had added that stipulation of must be the conference champion.

Ok.. here is another question about bowls and elgibilty...

Do teams have to have (at a minimum) WINNING records to go to a bowl game?

I do remember North Texas going to a bowl game a few years ago with a losing record and for this reason then NCAA stipulated you needed X# of wins to be "BOWL ELGIBLE".

But if every team in the conference has a losing record... say like the big 10 or pac 10, than why in this game do they still go to their bowl game?

If temple is like 7-4 and the 7th ranked and below big 10 teams all have LOSING records, why is it Temple misses a bowl game yet 3-8 Duckworth State goes to the Alamo Bowl because of the conference affiliation?

Wouldn't a Bowl game be allowed to go out of the conference to find a "bowl elgible" team even if it was an independent or say the 5th place WAC, San Jose team at 7-4 can replace another team in the Sun Bowl that doesn't have a winning record.

I ask because I noticed this happened to one of my WAC collegues with a winning record who got snubbed from a bowl but a team from Pac-10 with a 3 wins went to their bowl game in this game.

I'm not up to par with college football but I think a 6 win season makes you bowl eligible.

you need a minimum of six I-A wins and a non-losing record. the big conferences have tons of tie-ins due to guaranteed $$ for both parties involved--the university and the bowl presidents.

for instance the big 10 and sec have 7!!! tie-ins each. thats a ton. often times those conferences cant fulfill all 7 such as Bama and Ky on probation a couple years back which kept them out.

the NCAA says when they cannot fulfill the tie-in the bowl cannot select an at-large with a worse overall record than others available.

Thanks Geaux...

I thought that would be the case... unfortunately its not replicated in this game... there might not be a way to easily program the bits and bytes either as imagine the formula might be a nightmare unless there was some sort of a manual bowl selection process.
