View Full Version : SEC - PAC 10 tidbit

The top 4 teams in the SEC have the following scoring stats:
Alabama - 25.3 points for, 9.3 points against
LSU - 32.9 pf, 15.9 pa
UGA - 28.3 pf, 13.8 pa
auburn - 33.5 pf, 10.9 pa
Top 4 teams in the Pac 10:
USC - 49.8 pf, 20.5 pa
UCLA - 42.6 pf, 27.4 pa
Oregon - 35.4 pf, 24.5 pa
Cal - 37.9 pf, 20.1 pa
Now in all this discussion of how SEC scores indicate our weak offenses, nobody has pointed out that the Pac 10 has only ONE team which scores twice as many points as their opponents, while ALL FOUR of the top SEC teams score at least twice as many points as their opponents.
And it's not "mighty" USC which has the highest ratio of points scored to points allowed, it is actually auburn, with a ration of over 3 to 1! And second in the discussion is Alabama, which is outscoring its opposition at 2.7 to 1. The great Southern Cal, by far the best of the Pac 10, has a ratio of 2.42 to 1, which would place them a distant 3rd.

These 'tidbits' don't mean a thing. The only way to judge teams is head to head in nonconference and bowl play. Every stat except Ws and Ls is ultimately meaningless to everyone except BCS geeks.
The whole SEC inferiority complex is getting pretty old. You want an interesting tidbit? A recent ESPN.com poll asked who will win this week- USC or Stanford. The neat thing is, results are also broken down by state. So who just couldn't bring themselves to tell the truth and pick Southern California? Not Texas, not Virginia... the state of Louisiana picked Stanford of UC Davis shame at a rate of almost 5 points higher than the nation as a whole and at the highest rate of any state in the country. Them Bayou Bengals must've copied the recipe down wrong from the UF guys and got a big batch of Haterade instead.
The 2004 National Championship was split; and if after all the bowls had been played, almost every media outlet in the country thought USC was the better team that year, they weren't doing it just to piss off the SEC. Just calm down, clutch that gaudy crystal ball to your bosom to soothe your poor egos, and get over it!

I'd love to get a shot at USC in the Rose Bowl, even as heavy underdogs. We won our last NC against a highly touted Heisman winner, Im sure we can do it again.
tid·bit - noun - A choice morsel. They weren't meant to decide the BCS, just an interesting stat.

I'd say it's not the ratio of offense:defense that matters, it's the difference in points. USC outscores opponents by an average of almost 30 points a game. Auburn about 23.
If we take the average between how many points Auburn gives up (11) and how many USC scores (50), and do the same for Auburn, USC wins 30 - 27. I'd look forward to that game :)
But the truth is stats are misleading. They didn't both play the exact same teams under the same conditions. So the only stat that would matter would be on the field playing each other.

USC played Auburn the year that they split the NC with LSU, and beat Auburn handidly.
The only way to settle things of this nature is for the teams in dispute to play each other head up.
'Bama did take a Heisman winning QB out to the woodshed and break him off somethin proper, but Gino Torreta (SP??) wasn't all that good to begin with. And to top it all off, Miami's stupid players were saying some of the dumbest things about Alabama, pissing them off and giving them even more of a reason to come out fired up. ****Cough........ Just like Oklahoma.....Cough, Cough****.

And you call yourself a fan? That's the whole point of the sports games is to have fans that say their team is better and love their team to the end even when losing. These type of debates are good for the sport and shows how passionate we are about the sport and our team. Either show some pride and passion or change your hobby to something else.
Defense wins championsihps until another team other than USC shows me they can play defense this season the pac 10 is weaker than the SEC.
