Everybody I play online including myself decides to kick if I win the beginning coin toss. But why do we never see teams in the NFL do it? IMO one of the most important possessions of the game is the one after half time.

In the NFL you want to get the lead and go from there. On Madden its more the first person to get the stop wins. So if you go into the half with the lead and get the ball back and score again you pretty much have the advantage in a 4 min game.

In the NFL teams get the option of kicking or receiving at the beginning of the game and after the half.

the team that wins the opening toss gets the first choice... the loser gets the 2nd choice. They don't have to receive. They can choose to kick. But 99% of the time, they want the ball if they didn't get it to open the 1st half.

I ALWAYS KICK... Nothing like scoring to end the half, then again to open the 3rd.

Yea thats true, 99% of guys elect to Kick. I am part of that 1%, I always receive if I have a choice. The reason for that is same as for NFL coaches, I want to get lead. In opening drive I will run plays I know really well and I know I can execute and most of the time I get 6 out of that before my opponent adjusts. I just feel is much easier to start to play defense when pressure is on you opponent to score. And in 2006 running game mixed with PA is so effective that playing with lead is much easier that to play catch up.

in madden i always take the ball first.... i never want to kick it to my opponent.... going up 7-0 and putting some pressure on the other team early is the way to go as far as im concerned

You can not defer in the NFL. You can only do that in college football.

The only teams I ever see doing that in the nfl are teams with GREAT D or if there is like a strong wind on one side or the other.

This guy is correct.

The reason you don't see teams doing it in the NFL is that the team that lost the coin flip gets the choice in the 2nd half; it's not like Madden where the kicking team automatically receives the ball. If you win the toss and choose to kick the other team can still choose to receive the 2nd half kickoff and you're giving up an extra possession.

Exactly. My only question is, why doesn't EA design the game accordingly?

Because like TNT says, this game is catered to people that don't really understand football.

And I could post here on how to optimize your coin flip choices, but I'm not going to until after Hawaii, and even if I did tell everyone, they couldn't do it as well as I could because nobody has the instincts I have for kicking & receiving as it relates to wind strength and direction. My advice is to go to the lab and see what works.
