Okay guys,
I know you have been chomping at the bit on this one for a couple of weeks now. The Compression Guide 201 (Madden 2006 edition) is now up and ready to go.
Big B did a masterful job with this one. Those of you that purchased the guide last year will be really impressed with the major additions that he has made this year.
One of the only complaints we got about the guide last year was there weren't enough plays broken down. B has stepped up here and you'll find 60+ play breakdowns throughought the guide.

Enjoy!!

I wasn't hating on you Bert. I love your guides. I just hate a lot of people that play madden in a lame fashion...

Excellent job BigB and all that had a hand in it. Let me be the first to say that if you enjoyed the first one then you will love this one as well. I feel that the best sections were reading progressions and merrying routes. The Merring routes section is just SICK!!!!!! They were simple but often overlooked combinations. I also fee that this book will help get guys started in developing their own style.
Great Job BigB and all involved.

Man you have me blushing in front of my wife and kids dawg. :p I did my best and I'm very happy you loved it. It will be follow-ups in the fimroom and I would like for guys to hit the other link so we can roll ideads around to expand on the compression. Everyone has an eye for different things. If we all throw ideas around we can make this system better.

This has more general football knowledge than the other two playbooks(Ten, Min), right?
Also, will it still be purchasable after Christmas?

It's a very good mix of both. (Football and madden) Yes, you can download it after xmas.
The Compression is a football based scheme. I studied it, run it, and have seen guys in tournerys use these sets. The set-up of my book will give you a real football 'feel" when you read it. I made the book in a way where I had no intent to use pics. I wanted it to be a good read. The pics are there to help walk you threw my eyes as to what I see. The problem with real football is that the game don't play everything the way it should. In real football the players don't beat double coverage every single play. In real football a defense can't contain the run in quarters defense. (You see what I mean.) So when I was in the lab with the crew members would point out these things to me. RJ and Squeeze are very big on this point alone. They both took time showing and proving where real football falls off and when Madden begins. So I put those things in the book to help.

Yo,
I don't post much just read and soak up all the great knowledge that's around this forum but had to hit off this thread before I went to work. Great job B, even though I don't have the pics in chaps. 2 & 3, the write up was easy to read, understand, and put to use. This was real genius homie, real genius. Between compression, Korba's Minny book, and Philly Ron's joint I should buy a ticket to Hawaii rush the challenge and lay the smack down on some off those cats(yeah right) :D

Sorry if this is a newb question.
Tell me, if I were to pick up the Compression 2 book, would I still need the first one? I have the MINN PB guide by Kobra and was a huge fan of it and I am sure this guide will add to my repertoire immensely but I am not sure if I have to have both for it to make sense? I am new to the compression system. Thanks all, and VG we appreciate everything you try to do. Keep it up fellas. :D

Woh!
This is a nice nice book so far. I picked it up late last night. I like your ideas. Just off the top of my head I don't think I saw any Pro Sets, is this because of protection schemes? Other than that I see a lot I can use in Andy Reids Playbook. Thanks man.
Man with the books VG puts out, you could start your own Ballers club using VG products as a template!
Way to go BigB! Also a shout-out to RonJ's book, I have to drop him a line as well!
I'll say this, if you only buy one VG Book this year, it has to be this book! Oops! I mean if you have to buy 2 VG Books this year you have to include BigB's book in the mix, Sorry Bert.

This may sound like a dumb question, but for those people who bought the Titans PB will buying the Compression 201 still be a good purchase? Can it be used in relation to using the Titans PB and what was discussed in that book?
Right now I am still working my way through that book. With being married and kids it may take me a couple weeks before I have a total grasp on that book but wanted to see if I should still be thinking about the Compression book.
Thanks in advance,

Question about the personel.
When I do get another PS2 (other one doesnt want to load at the loading screen  ) I plan on using Atlanta.
-Best all around TE in the game (Crumpler)
-Back who can run the ball and catch the ball with speed (Dunn 96 speed)
-Tall Physical receivers (Jenkins, White both 6'5. Jenkins might be 6'4)
-Fast receiver (R. White, possibly D. White if he still on the roster)
-Fast Quarterback (Vick 95 speed)
I got a mobile quarterback. A TE that can cause problems for any defense. A running back who can cause problems. 2 physical receivers. A receiver who can stretch the field.
Which book do you think would benifit this team. They some of everything. My 2 favorites right now are Minnesota and Pass Balanced. Maybe Carolina.
Sorry if this is a newb question.

Both are good choices. I would lab the pass balance because more people use the minny book. You have a deeper book and you can always fall back on the Minny book for a change up.

This is the part that I will love. Everyone has there own way of playing and seeing things. If we use the other link to throw ideas around we can expand on the scheme. Thanks again Mac. :D
Mac my bad. The Split back was in there when I talked about the spilt back flex. The Split back is a nice formation. The problem I had with it was running the ball. For us old heads the split back off tackle was off the chain. If you had a dive in it you could do somethings. I need to lab that set some more to see what could be done. If they had some more screens or something I could make it work. It's like a mini 2 back.

Man how yall come up with all this. That Pas Balanced book is off the charts.
Hee hee the funny thing is I came up with it on the fly when I was doing the book. I lie to you not. I couldn't begin to tell you about any plays in that book right now. I look at each book and when I saw something that people wanted or needed I lab it online and vs. the cpu with the AI all the way up. I can't stop none of the stuff I showed in that book.

Hey BigB, I have the Titans playbook and was wondering if this would be of use to me to go along/use with the Titans book?
Yep it sure would. Just look at the reports others have been putting up on this link. All of them range from different playbooks and skill levels. They enjoyed the read and the info that is in it. Try and see for yourself the two would be tight. Now you have a playbook breakdown and a scheme book. ;)

The only thing I didnt get last year from VG was the Compression 101 book,I purchased everything else, Just like this Year. And while looking through this years, there are some reference to last years, Like the Filmroom the past couple years you put the priors year in the New one, I know I may be reaching, but is it possible for someone like me who didnt get it to be able to have access to it, I know most people who have this years have last years, but I think it would help with some of the reference and some points that are not in this years...Just thought Id ask, My Father always said, you dont know unless you ask.... ;)

Thank you for getting back in the swing of running the compression. This will be on going this year. In regards to talking about things within the scheme on th eother link and in the filmroom. I have a feeling that we can get more out of the book if we lab and come back and talk about it. This way we all can expand on the compression and improve as a whole. I will re-enforce our findings in the filmroom.

:D Hey B check your PM
All I have to say is......WHOMP, THERE IT IS!
There is so much to think about in this book.
Nice Work Big B.
Why thank you dawg. I just wanted to take time out and thank the members of the WBC for the early and hard lab time. In the early part of the year we put in some hard work. The young guys took no slack in the basement and we puch one another. Some days we got heated and wanted to walk away from the game. Then it was times we all laughed and thought about how well the crew will be this year. I listen to them wehn they toold me about adjustments to make. I listen to them when they told me about what NFL schemes work in the game and didn't. Then when we went online after games we would talk about ways guys counter what we did. I also drove many of my members to EA Tourneys and BCA tourneys. I looked at what worked and what didn't. I talked with top pleyrs and they gave excellent advice. I want to thank them all. This is the reason why you have the insight you have now. Again, this isn't a quick fix. You have to lab. lab, and lab. You will move form playbook to playbook and team to team. You have to play the best players you can find and be aware on how they play you. Hit the lab and polish up your scheme. Like RJ said to me when he was a baby in the camp. "You have to know how to defend your stuff ebfore running it.!" He was right. This way if you face the same thing you can shut it down and you can see the counter coming a mile away. When you get your game there you can stick your chest out because your game is off the chain from the hard work.
Thank you all in the WBC for you know who you are. I would also like to thank VG Sports for allowing me to express myself as a writer, and as a virtual coach. Oh and lastly thank you Valerie and Tre. This is my wife and my son. There were many days I wasn't able to spend the time needed with them and they never complained. My son at times would walk in and kiss me and go back in the room and look at tv. My wife would do what she could to help me do what I needed to do. She had her days now, but all in all she was there in support. I love you two to death, the WBC members, and I also love you all in the VG Family. :D

Hey BigB, which playbook out of the 6 that you broke down do you prefer using for the compression O the most?

I posted a question in here, just checking back to see if you could answer it. Its about now having the Titans PB by Ron J and if I should still buy the Compression 201. Please see earlier post.
Thanks B!
PS Do you ever make it to Richmond VA??? That is where I am from.

Pass balance, oak., and detroit.

My bad I thought I got to it. Well I suggest getting this one also. The reason why is that Ron J broken down a solid playbook. What this book is about is the compression scheme in regards to Madden and life away from Madden. XBOX 360 or whatever. You can have 7 playbooks (ron j and the 6 I looked at.) and scheme to run. You get a lot with both books. Yes I have family there and I'm only two hours away from ya.
Yes this will help you no doubt. Thanks for the shout out and I hope you enjoy the book.
sounds like the book is good, im going to have to check it out you know i got you B
Thanks dawg. I have seen you called me and I like the stuff you were talking about. When I get off on friday or before I will hit you back. Thanks for the shout dawg.

The strategy laid out in this playbook is awesome. Well worth the price of admission. :D I was wondering if you could further explain what the "A" and "C" gaps are that you mentioned in the Pass Protection section. Thanks

The "A" gap is the area between the center and the guard. The "C" gap is the area between the tackle and the TE. (or the guard and the tackle pending on set.)

Whatup BigB, I bought your Compression book last year and I'm planning on buying this one. But I have to read up on the first one, I almost forgot that I had bought it. I never really got to read it because of Fam, work and school. Alot of the guys are saying that most of the stuff from last year is in this this years book. I know it's worth buying cause anything you and Kobra put out is worth it, but how much different is this years book from last years? I'm really tired of getting my *** whooped on. Do you think I'll be alright with last years for now? HoLL@Y@BoY

First off Big B your book has really opened my eyes to unmeasurable levels. So I wanna first give you your props. Now much question is more about playmaking so maybe another member can help me out. When 2006 came out I initally liked the Detroit PB but switched to the Pitt, TB, and Oakland PB. I am now liking the Pass Balanced. IN the Lions PB there is a play called Lions Corner in their tight formation which I can somewhat duplicate in the Pass Balanced Book(SB Tight Slots Hitch Corner) This is what I do for the PS 2.
Is there a way to shorten his slant curl route so it looks exactly like the Lions Corner route?
Thanks in advance

Sup dawg. Long time no hear from. This book is different than last year. This years book has more play breakdowns, pass progression, pass protection, and a host of other things. I also added some lab session tips, and a mild advance section. You will like it. :D

Just read over it again. If you have problems with it just pm me the chapter it's on and I will walk you threw it via IM. :)

When you post stuff they're getting what you paid for at no cost. So I will walk you threw via PM. No disrespect to those who that haven't gotten the guide. The thing is I help everyone. Hey BigB got any suggestions for me....I am a fan of the quick strike open it up and spread the ball around...like the rams did in their SB years...I bought the book and liked how you talked about running out of compression and go from there. Well i'll make an effort early and do a run or two but hten I get in a rhythm throwing and completely abandon the run and when my pass is getting shutdown later I am stuck. Got any tips on incorporating more runs?
:) This is my favorite part of the compression. The key is you let the defense tell you when to run. This sounds silly, but hear me out. If you studied the section about pre-reads I spoke about this. You can pound on 6-7 in the box. Now let's say 5-6 when running singleback sets. If the defense load up the box, then you air them out. If they play your pass you run. Now you know this, but this is the kicker. When you 1st get on the field you need to show you can run out of the set your in. All of them as a matter of fact. This will set the table early for you. Once you do that you pop off a few passes. The person you're playing will have to do one or two things. He either has to play run or pass. Now if you're using a set that don't tip them off you're in control. Just lab vs. many fronts and study how people play your pound and pass. Once you do this you will have no problem with the pound game. Like when you're in the weak sets you may notice that if you're playing vs. a 3 man front your counters work better than dives. If you're using the singleback sets vs. a 4 man front, you may notice that dives kills that set. So if that's the case, you need to use married routes that expose an area away from the place that you want to run at. Then you put that pound on that butt. :D Beaware of the safety players. They come down hard and quick. You need to read how they defend the run and the angle they use. This is key when you want to dominate.

BigB did a wonderful job on answering your question... I just wanted to add a little bit to that... Yes you have to show you can run and pass out every formation you use... But you also have to show your opponent that you can use the whole field... Too many times I see people hit a certain route against me and then they will come right back to it again and again... I know alot of people say well if they can't stop it keep doing it... I agree and disagree.. Alot of times when I am on defense and lets say you hit a corner route against me which of course everyone loves the corner routes.. I see that and I will show you the same look on d and try and bait you into throwing that route again... Which alot of people do because they assume it will be there again... But if you were to hit the corner route and then hit the se on a slant, then fl on a curl, then the te over the middle, then the hb in the flats.... Well you get the point... Now I am scratching my head over there on defense because you have showed the ability to use the whole field... The same can be said when you abandon the run... I am dropping 11 men in coverage until you give me a reason not to... That is why it is so important to not only run and pass BUT also when you pass, use the whole field and when you prove you can do that early it will expand your playbook and running the ball will be that much easier....
Good point that many players overlook.

Big B, I am going to be using the Chiefs in the VG League,
I have Compression 201 and PB and Virtual, But My question is I want to lab a new playbook with this new Team and been looking over the Skins Book, Is this a good choice for the Chiefs offence. I see alot of Single Back Big plays that have great Playmakers turning that formation into Trips on the right side ect nice options with the variety of plays out of that formation run and pass, Ive have been looking at the playbook I purchased compared to others Ive seen and used, Ive used and know the Panthers book inside out but dont like it with KC, So my Question mainly, If you had the Chiefs and based on there personal would you use the Skins Play book....I also like the write up in Filmroom on the compression for the Skins good Job as usual..

Big B:
Whatz up, props to both of your compression books.
Did I see in a recent post where you said the real advantage to compression is to run or pass? I thought the real advantage was due to the presnap reads you wrote about in the first book. Can you clarify?
Also what about some of the protection schmes in the Detroit PB? To me the near tight and far tight formations are a quarters strike blitz waiting to happen. Also the 4 wr tight play Lions Corners is a great play with TIME. But what if you are not getting time? Most good players online are bringing wood so time is usually a factor.
I'll wait for your response. I am sure you realize that I am not bashing you at all as I am loyal VG customer and a big fan of you, Kobra and the rest of the VG family.

BigB I read yoru post on running a few times and started making an effort to run mroe. What I have been doing is pick a formation I like to pass out of and pick a good running play and go to the line, then I read the D and decide if I want to stick with the run or audible to a pass. I have found myself actually doing more run plays and since I like to pass a lot the D usually shifts to cover the WR's and leaves some big lanes open for the run. Antoher thing i've found success with is coming out in like a I or strong I and then formation shift to my 4 WR set and keep my run play. The D usually adjusts to cover the pass. My run game has improved and its been there at the end of games for me when I need it most. My running still isn't the greatest but its improving...now if only I could improve my porous run D... :(

My only problem with the skins book is pass protection. Whne you work bigger sets you tend to have a better shot at running it well. I like the sb to bunch thing tho. The only problem is the Icon watching crap. Hmm look at detroit and the tight slots you may like what you see. I think they also have a singleback big and bunch too. Seattle and tenn is nice too. You run routes with your wr's and hit Gonzo for the pass lead up. Dunn isn't that bad of a TE also. You just need to be in a set that is singleback based so you can pound the rock with your backs. When they play run, hit them with some quick hitters.

Okay when I did the book last year I said that the advantage of the compression was pre-reads. Then you could read man and zone better. Now that was 101. In 201 we take an approch where we are coming off the baby milk you can say. Now you have a foundation, played some games, and seen something last year. There are people that hide there coverages very well. So if you use compressed sets just to see what someone is in you didn't fair well vs. good players. So in this book i talked about one thing. Pre-reads are only to see if you should run or pass. Nothing more nothing less. It senseless to sit there looking to see if they're in man or zone. If you have overloads if it's man you hit the person who release from the man that is covering him, and if it's zone you hit the person who is uncovered via marrying of routes. All you need to know is how many people are in the box and where is the safeties. If you read 5-6 it's time to pound. If you see 6 and more in the box you pass the ball. I just made it easier for you so when you're in a tight game you won't waste your time wondering if its man or zone.
As for protection. You can look at the pass protection section in the book. I talk abou hot reads and how to set-up blocking schemes. I love to help, but at the same time i want some of the stuff from the book not to get out in this link. Many people haven't gitten the book, and certain questions force me to speak on them and people are getting info you paid for for free. :o If you have problems with the d-twon book hit me up via pm. Look at the section on pass protection and I will open the ebook and we can walk threw it together. You can ask others that have did this already and I helped them this way. Thanks for getting the book and hope to hear from you soon.

Yo B:
I think I am getting the protection schemes down in the Detroit pb. By the way excellent writeups on the Shotgun Slot Strong. Powerful. Also this is an excellent book that really moves the chains.
Check this, you know the Slant Hook out of Far tight is a kool short yardage money play against zone or man. What I do is hot route the outside receiver on a fade route and usually the back is open against both cover 2 and cover 3. (The AI forces the zone defender responsible for the flat to cover the slot receiver in the curl zone). In man coverage the slot receiver is open for a nice short gain on the fade curl and the TE is also open.
I hollar at ya later, thanks for the knowledge

soon. the thing is that this guide was made to use on ANY gen of madden. football period. Floods and marrying of routes will help you move the ball in a organized fashion. Just ask the guys here. They have found things after reading the book I haven't touched yet. This is why I love doing scheme books than playbooks. The scheme make the routes work.

judging by the number of responses in the two threads it seems alot of poeple run the compression or are intrested in it at least. If anyone is on the ps2 and would like to get some lab time hit me up "Westytuff". I figure if we can get a group going we can also learn something from each other and be able to help one another out.
Get the guide so that you can get the most out of your lab session. The people that have the guide study it and have been maybe for 2 years. This way you can expand on the scheme.

in simple words, compression=Alot of recievers, not a lot of space. Everyone is crowded together or bunched.

I have been using Minn but it only has the sg sets I wanted more sets to choose from so I am using the raiders book I like it alot. I guess the question I was asking is if those are the only forms considered compression or could I use motion and form shifts to create others? Since getting your book just using the ideas and routes I have had more success in lots of forms like sb big wing and sb slot strong. Its really unimportant I was just curious if there was certain criteria that make it compression what is important is that Im playing better offense so thanks again.

big b, i read your book, theres some stuff i really dont get about this offensive system. i try using bunch, tight and other commpresed sets but theres always too good of coverage or a quick rush. am i not hot routing or making reads right, or what. i try practice a lot but i just cant seem to cosistanly move the ball and i completly blow it when i get in the redzone. :(

how do i stop compression?
i've played some good ppl who really know how to run good O. i dont know how to defend bunch or trips etc. though, its hard. like when ppl run tight or 5wr bunch, i usually play quarter, zone or man...
I can understand how you feel. The thing is the compression is about timing and getting your reads down. I said in the book, it's not a quick fix. You have to lab and work on pass protection, progression, and hitting the open player. You said above not to long ago that the compression was hard to stop, but some stuff you don't understand or work for you. You have to look at each section and take your time in getting those things down. Then move on to th next thing. Like if you have problems with man press, you should lab that. If you have problems with zone, you need to read marry routes and lab it up. If you have problems with heat, each section I spoke on hot reads and getting the ball off quickly, Every thing you need is in the book, just lab it. I know some things are hard to understand, just ask any of us here we all run and love the compression. We can help out. The one thing we can't help is lab time. I have lab sections in the book you can use.

Ok you have the book, but it's at work (and it don't work). You have a cpu at home, but you don't have the internet. You also want a refund for the book. I will tell Bert about it and see what we can do. (I was confused about what you were asking.)
I'm no computer expert but i was thinking maybe the book can be transferred to a disc and mail to me. What do you think? The only reason i was asking for a refund was if there was no way for me to get the book under my circumstances then i would need a refund.
:D i'll call bert now. i need your email address and your name sent to my pm. thanks

i have a question i was lookin at the compression guide i bought and i noticed that every single pass play that was broken down went in for a score which is not as easy as they made it look in the guide especially when playin on all madden. then i noticed on one of the shots that Marc Bulgers cone was unusually large. so i went to practice mode and noticed that the cone on my game was much smaller than what was in the book and my game was on all madden but when i put my game on all pro it was same size as the one in the compression book. so i was wonderin if the plays that were described in the guide ran against all madden or all pro becuz if they are on all pro then that dosnt really help someone like myself who alwasy plays on all madden.
Thanks in advance.

Okay....lol I think we're looking into things a little too much. Pics are for eye candy only. We use them to try to give you an idea of what were talking about. As for the cone size and stuff like that I play on all madden w/ no cpu assist with the defensive AI all the way up. At this point of the season I don't even see cones any more. (LOL) Just seeing men running around and areas w/ alley defenders. Plus we use a PC version of the game instead of a console one. This amy have something to do with the pics too. The ideas and things that were talked about many top players used to win tourneys. They have little to no problem scoring. :D Many people that have gotten the book said that the guiide has helped them. Many have also started another link and kick point of views back and fourth. I think there is something there for you and many other players on all skill levels. All in all don't look into things that much. If someone is in man and you run a streak, post corner, and a curl...one of them will be open and if the corner is open they will score. If they are in zone and you run the same combo, you will get one of the routes open. If they bring wood, the curl or the streak is the hot reads. So scoring and moving the ball is easy. Just as long as you make the right reads with proper timing you will move the ball.
Thanks for the reply and buying the book. If you feel that the things in the book are below your playing skill level we can talk about advance stuff either in the filmroom or in the other link. You can also pm me too. Take care.

Big B,
I'm a 46 year old that just got hooked on Madden Online two months ago. I've played the games in past years with freinds but never online. Well of course I was getting beat pretty bad some times. I came across your site and purchased the Compression 201 guide and Kobra's Minnesota guide. I purchased both of them. I can already see a vast improvement in my game.
My stick is about average, but I'm learning to read defenses and to know where my hot reads are. I have been practicing against the computer and hooking up with some guys online to get better. I highly recommend your guide. I play a bunch of guys from my church that are teenagers and in their 30's and I was already givin' it to them. Now I'm expecting to really go to work. You can expect a lot of my friends to start picking up your guides.
One thing I noticed immediately was that my sacks are going down because of the suggestions you give in the guide. Also my running game that was really bad is improving because of the different plays that I run out of now.
Your website is great by the way. Keep up the good work.
Are there any tournaments for us old heads? The stick control of some of the
kids I play is just sick. We need a 40 and older league. Best wishes in the new year to you and your family. Give a shout out to Kobra for his guide too.

Thanks Big B, I took your advise and with detroit PB and With KC Chiefs and working and labbing the Compession book my game has improved greatly
Thanks Big B

I order the 2005 Madden Strategy Guide by MISTAKE instead of the 2006 Guide. I submitted a ticket on this issue about 4 - 5 days ago & I haven't heard anything back from your staff. Could someone please help me on this?
Again, I honestly made a mistake & order the 2005 instead of the 2006. I have the e-mail showing I did pay for the product. You can contact me at xbadboyx9086@yahoo.com.

Thanks Big B,
I got the book over the holidays. I think the COmpression Scheme is one that I will follow until I hang up the sticks. I used various compressions sets when I was home and I hammered the competition. I mean I lost a few games but I feel confident in my offensive game. I took alot of your ideas and changed them to fit my personnell and I get automatic victories. I think you should have featured the west coast playbook as well. It is an ATOMIC BOMB of compression...

Thanks Big B , I want fellow ballers( old skool & new Skool) to give the compression guide a shot. At first I was skeptical until I actually PM Big B myself. He was nice enough to respond & tell me that his guide would be a good look for me. I got the guide studied it for a week then took what I learned from the guide online. One of my bad habits was to lock on to a reciever and fire away. The compression offense gives alot of nice options that I never paid attention to. I actually read my recievers better and I am able to get away from heat because I am not just locking on to one reciever. I am more than happy with this guide , I would recommend that anyone looking to step up to get this guide. I am a old skool baller & this is the first year that I have gotten online seriously. My current record is 86-73 ps2( would be better without those damm DISCOs) , with the compression book I may actually get 100 wins :D . Which will shatter my orginal goals of just getting a few wins and staying competive!!
Thanks dawg that really means a lot to me. I did the best I could when I did this guide. I have good news everyone. Since the Compression did so well this year me and Bert talked it over and there will be a Compression 301. I wanted to move on to something else, but the book has sold double of what it did last year. Vinny that is a player here won the Vg Online Tourney running a compressed set the whole game. For those who have brought the book, he put in a play in the book in the last chap. Thanks again for the kind words.

The table of contents is different, and the layout within the chapters is different. Did you guys make changes since December, or is my second copy currupted?
Thanks fellas.

Seems to me focusing on running a lot of compression sets isn't the best way to go about it; rather, I find it better to mix in compression sets with more "standard" formations to mix things up. Having practiced with compression for offense and against it for defense, it seems that there is a lot of weaknesses with it that aren't really covered in the book. bump and run along with heavy blitzing tends to really send everything awry, especially if you manually position defenders to bump the receivers into each other (like in trips bunch). They can literally get clogged for 3-4 seconds, which is more than enough time to sack the qb. You can do all this while still covering hot flat reads and stuffing the run as well
Then my son this is when you use motion. The thing that I found strange is the heat problem many have. I have seen heat and delay bump and runs. I never seen ANY heat that beat a slant, a flat route, or a slam. All of these plays getyou well over 4-5 yards a pop. Now I'm not saying that it's not any out there. The thing is that Kobra ran some heat on me when we were labbing, and many others have too. I was able to hit the flats, motion and throw slants, and run the ball for safe yards. Then you have the hike throw routes you can use.
A spread set is decent, but allows the defense the chance to hide there intent on defense. They can man lock off man and also coverage audible zone along with hot routes dropping in weak areas of the zone. They can also hide heat well when you're not in a compressed set. When you run compression as a base they have to make a choice as to how they want to defend you.

I have noticed that I have problems with heat untill I pay attention to were it is coming from. After that, I can handle it pretty easy. Last time I faced heat on every play, I went 3 quarter and didn't score on offense. But I scored 30 in the 4th.

is that an i form or singleback slam?
what do you mean by hike throw? is that throwing like as soon as you hike? can you give an example of one?

Singleback form. Yes, throwing the ball as soon as you get the ball in your hands. The thing is that many people come on a talk down on schemes or systems without knowing the possible counters out there. These comments can be misleading and force people to shy away from the compression based on these comments. The person above made a solid comment. When you know where the heat is coming from you can beat it. Sometimes I take a sack or two just to see what I'm working with. Then I set-up a blocking scheme and have quick routes set-up with some pound.
Hi I'm new here, should I get the Strategy Guide for Madden 2006 or Big B's Compression Offenese 201?
Thanks

Going over all compressed sets is the right way to go because it's a compression guide. If someone press you when you're in a compressed set you have outlets with the backs and the TE's. Then you have the option of running heavy compressed sets where you can use TE's in your scheme. I run the compression with the Giants and I love to see the bump and run. Either Tiki, Shockey, or the other TE's will have a field day with hike, snap, and throw. The problem I have seen is that people make comments about issues without looking at the whole picture. You have the ability to used offensive line shifts. You have the ability to use motion. You also have the ability to use personnel that release off the press instantly. Many of the people that were at Philly that were in the top 16 used compressed sets. Many used Tight Slots, Weak Tight, Weak Close, I Twin Tight, I Close, Singleback Tight Doubles, Far Tight, Near Tight, Singleback Tight, and Singleback Bunch. The ones that came with bump and run and blitz were looking at the final 16 play. It's way too easy to beat man bump and run in the compression. Lastly, many don't know the roles of players when they send the wood or face this sytle of defense. Like a guy in the league I'm in. He sends the Nickle Over Strong Brave every down. The reason why is because of the pressure and his ability to cover the field well. The problem with his scheme was that if the back released to the right side of the field the person covering him get pick by a rub the compressed set created. I hike the ball and throw. No look with NO CONE for 6 points. He made an adjustment. When he did I ran the weak twin te FB Dive for 14 yds. He then made adjustments, and then I hit him for a quick slant outside with the TE2. Then he made another adjustment. I then hit him deep with Moss for 6. All of this was a hike, one step drop, and throw. ONE STEP DROP, SET, AND THROW.
I always wanted to say this.
People have the right to say what they want. The problem is speaking on something based on your skill level or personal experince. Just because something don't work for you, it don't mean it don't work for others. The bump and run isn't nothing this year at all. Last year with the delay bump it was hard to move the ball. This year the press is set and release. When you run floods that allow you to set picks and rubs you have the advantage. More so when you know who suppose to cover who and using the right personnel of the field. I love to see someone press Gates, Clark, Gonzon, Shockey, or Moss. The list goes on and on. I said in the guide.."look for match-ups that are to your advantage.." If someone press you work a match-up that will allow you to release quickly. Then when you use quick hitting running plays it cause problems for the run. Slants, the flats, "V" routes from the HB/FB, fade routes out of the backfield by hb/fb, and many other combos are there. If you lab, and look for them you can see that the press w/ heat isn't a mojor issue. Someone that sit on your tendencies and have great stick is a problem. The compression gives you options to help you get by a person with great stick. So please stop questioning a theory that many people have won plenty of money games, tourneys, and NFL Championships with.

B,
After my 5 game losing streak I went back to basics. I hit the lab hard with the pocket protection drill at all madden.
Next evening, I put up 316 yrds on a level 3 cat with a good record. I can't emphasize enough about pass protection. Mastering pass protection is the crux of the compression offense. I'm not saying out don't give up sacks, but during that streak, I was giving up about 3-4 sacks a game at critical times. Do you have any tips you can give us ballers about the pass protection scheme for 07? Keep up the excellent work.

Big B and Co...
Man i think ya just overloaded my senses wit' the guide.
(no pun intended). I wouldnt even call it a guide to tell ya the truth. The guide practicaly teaches dudes about plain ole' football, and i love it. I like how the guide doesnt hold our hands and walk us thru everything. It gives the dudes who got it a great template to run an effective offense because of the many variations a baller can come up with. Just like you metioned how Bill Walsh ran it. Look how his predesessors are doing in the NFL. Mike Holmgerm, John Gruden, Andy Reid, George Seifert, Mike Shanahan etc...
I rely on my run game, special teams and defense to win my games...well even to COMPETE!. I have read alot of books on great offensive/defensive coaches or i have researched online. But my passing game straight up sucks, i aint gonna front. But for some reason i pick up defense better, even tho i played Tailback in H.S and in my Junior/Senior years, the FS position (So you might guess who i am on defense)
I aint gonna front hard tho'. I aint big on buying guides because i always thought guides just show dudes how to run plays that are taking advantage of A.I flaws. I aint down wit' that. I play the game of madden like i would if i was coaching/Playing on the real field. BUT, my manz advised me to get it and i had some extra cash...so i said "ok f*ck it". Im thru wit' madden....im a Head Coach 07 kinda dude anyway........To end this...Beautiful book!!!!!! One thing i know about coaching is that, youre a teacher first and foremost....thats Wassuup!- Keep up the good work!!!BANG BANG DOLPHINS!!!

My question is you say with the compressed sets you can hike snap and throw the ball because it beats the press with your personnel, but when they are calling zones does this theory work as well?Because what I've noticed about zones this year is they have a delay area at which they do their bump on the wr's and I've taken more sacks because of this.It always happens at 5-7 yds downfield and I thought it couldn't happen past 5yds and this does drive me crazy. So should I always run some type of marrying routes and flooding routes to help with this problem or what? It just seems like to me that the zone D's are harder to get by for this reason.

The key to running the compression is to always run some sort of marrying of routes. This way regardless of man or zone you have a steady progression and a systematic way to move the ball. The hike and throw is based on man press with the HB hitting the flats, running slant routes by wideouts, and there are some routes that you can hike...snap...and throw. (You need to check in the filmroom about the routes I'm talking about. Strong I series.) The key to a solid flood a.k.a. offensive overload is to have a nice backside route to work with it. Like in Oakland you have a play that shows this. The Singleback Bunch Slants play. You have th eTE shooting to the flats, you have the HB shooting to the flats, and everyone else is doing slants. Now the slant/flat is a marrying combo. You have your flood on the strong side w/ the same set-up. Now if someone sits on your strong side you have the slant by the SE that you can hit. Like the TE fade in the weak close. You have a post route as the backside route that has a marrying combo of the dig/angle fade route. This play display rubs and picks for the TE and the FL. The flat route by the HB will draw the man defender towards him so that you can have a passing lane for the SE doing his post route.
Please all what I put down is solid stuff. I love the questions and I'm very excited about Compression 301. Plese don't question the scheme or what is put down in my guide. Labbing the timing of these plays and understanding the system will vastly improve your outlook on football and the way you play the game. ;)

The next thing I'm wondering is if this theory will work to beat these guys that are manually moving thier guys around and creating that super bump-n-run that guys are talking about this yr..I also was wondering how to run the ball better against someone that just won't change defenses no matter what you try to do to get them out of a particular set of D formations.A.K.A. the 4-6 or Qtrs D.As much as I try to run the ball out of the compressed sets,it just seems to me to be too hard to accomplish against these types of players.I keep trying to pound the ball on them, but with no luck at getting any where with it.Is it that I need to work more on my reading the D or is it something else that I'm not seeing while I'm playing the game?Well anything you could suggest would be helpful and thanks for answering my last question.

I only run the vs. certain things.
(1) If they have less than 7 in the box.
(2) If they use some sort of fag defense (when they put there line in passing coverage
(3) To set-up certain money play formations (i.e. Divide in the Oakland PLaybook. I will use the same motion and formation shifts, then run a counter or dive.
Running the ball vs. press coverage isn't hard at all. The DB's press up and the wideouts latch on to the defenders and allow you to get a better block on them. Then you have plays that if they're in man coverage that has wideouts on streaks. These type of plays pull the defenders away from the box and allow you a chance at getting a better gain. When I face a 4-3 or 4-6 I tend to use the FB Dive/HB Toss combo. More so when I'm in the twine te. If I read 3 man fronts I use dives or in singleback slams. I also like counters on these sets too.

Here is the problem that I have been running into with certain players and the way they position their Db's.You say that the Wr's should provide run support which they do if the other person doesn't bring them to the inside of the Wr's.That is the problem that I have been having with certain players where they will position their Db's up next to the line and inside of the Wr's at the line so they can only get like a tempory block from the Wr's so that by the time you even get to the line with your hb,they have already shed the block by the Wr's.Just trying to give you a little more insight on the issue B.Also after they do this they control a DE/DT and push their way 2-3yds back into the backfeild at the snap.I'm hoping that this yrs game with the new blocking ability helps take some of this out of their control. Can't wait for your next installment on the compression O 301.Thanks for the help on my questions though B,greatly appreciated.

After they move db's around, formation shift or audible to a diferent set. If you go from trips to a normal, the db will be out of position for the pass

hey Big B or Cobra, is the 201 guide for PC and downloadable after you purchase it or is it an actual book you get in the mail?
And is it or will it work for 2007?
There will be a Compression 301 this year. Yes, this scheme works every yr. on every game. Even in NCAA. You have noticed that more compressed sets have been added to NCAA. Bert said that The Compression Offense 201 was the leading top seller last yr. I will do two guides this yr. and Compression 301 is one of them. The other one is a surprise. :D

Hopefully a Defensive Approach.
I'll be in line for 301, that's for sure. :D

I want to order the newest compression guide for CG.
Can I pay with paypal, and if so, how? Also - what do you guys think of running compression on CG with the Redskins pb? I love that pb for it's run plays and it looks to me like compression could work well for it.
Thanks.

I own both play books & its more than worth the money.I have the Film room also but what cover in the film room isn't even a fraction of whats in the play books.I use compression more than Spread because spread is very hard for me you got to make very quick reads but the spread i feel is a little better than compression.

what is a compresion offense?

A compression offense is one in which the WRs line up closer to the lineman, and they stack, bunch up, etc to create problems for the defense to run man coverage. Pittsburgh has some good sets that are already compressed.
The best compression offenses come from the manual audibling to create "tight" looks. Shotgun Tight is a compression set, but motioning a receiver to the other side creates a Trips Bunch Tight, compressed set.
The reason it's hard to run man against it is that it creates picks. Imagine a Triangle in which you are responsible for defending one corner of the triangle. Compression routes will run the other two points in front of you and make it hard for you to get in position to run a man coverage against it...
