E3 2006: Madden NFL 07 Preview
by Dan "PackWolf" Bertholomey
May 14, 2006 - The build was set up for 1 min. quarters so it was a little tough to get a real good impression of the game. Here are my impressions. The engine, graphics and gameplay look and feel similar to last year but there are significant improvements. The graphics are more detailed this time around from everything to the player models to the very cool and much improved field degradation. The field gets torn up and wet when it rains and footprints and the field wearing out are all there this year. The grass is now 3D. There are now cool player intros where they are introduced like every game is the Super Bowl. Running out of their inflated helmets, high fiving their teammates.... To sum up the graphic impressions from E3, The graphics are improved over last year but not by leaps and bounds from the current Madden from what I saw at E3 and still not up to par with the draft day renders we saw a couple of years ago in my opinion. The coolest upgrade in graphics is the weather effects on the field and how it deteriorates as the game goes on.

First, I'm not PackWolf. I'm just the messenger. PackWolf was nice enough to post his impressions on my website and I'm passing along the information to the VG Sports forums.
PackWolf was invited by the show because of his involvement in the gaming community for years. And because of demographics. No one wanted to watch 8-10 twenty year olds running the game show. PackWolf was a nice, class edition to the show to help lure the older gamers to follow his exploits.
Who wants to watch a loud mouth yelling pop-pop-pop in the face of his opponent all game long. Chad Johnson should've popped that boy in the mouth.
Now, did PackWolf show out on the show. No. But he represented the gaming community well.... which a lot of players didn't.

Thanks for adding so much.
Actually, I thought Packwolf represented himself well. He improved his offensive game
alot in the time he was on the bus. He also addresses people with respect. Its easy
to sit behind a cpu and hurl stones.
Hopefully, you'll grow up before your son is old enough to follow your example.

I would like to know this. What do you expect to accompolish by making a comment like that about a person who has done NOTHING to you. Do you feel better about yourself about commenting on this man madden skills or his weight? I guess you're setting a very good example to your two year old alright.

I have met Packwolf twice and he is a stand up guy. THey could have put a lot of people on that bus and the outcome would have been the same or worse. Many of those guys come to tournaments that we advertise here. They play a different type of ball then you know of unless you been in that environment. Please respect the man for at least taking his lumps like a man and keeping a never die attitude.

yea i had a chance to meet packwolf a couple mmonths before he went on the show and he is the most respectful person i know. Im only 16 and this guy was giving me props on my game and even adressing me as sir. So whoever wrote that comment about him your a jackass who has a low self esteem you really need to grow up before your immature behavior bites you back.

sadesnrissa show some class when you post here on the VG Forum. Your comment above is not welcome here. Pack Wolf is a class act, he brought some much needed maturity to show.

I am a bit concerned about this:
"A couple of negative notes..QB fumble issue was still in the game in this build. Hopefully this will be fixed before the game is finished. The most serious issue in my opinion is that at this point there is NO individual playmaker on defense and from what I was told by one of the developers, it will not be in this years game. I was very disappointed and actually angry about this and began to let the developers hear my frustrations. Their response was that , this is a next gen engine and it takes time to implement all of the features that were in the Xbox Madden. Two completely different game engines. Since this is a new engine, new console, each cycle they only have a certain amount of time to add new features. They started from scratch with this new Madden engine last year. They reminded me that it took years on the original Xbox to achieve all of the final features that were in Madden 06 for Xbox."
No individual playmaker???? That really sucks!!

1st - props to PackWolf (represented us well)...
2nd - No Playmaker on D sucks!!!......that is one of the reasons that i stopped playing the 360version -- being able to manipulate the D is what i really keyed on....
This is something that was asked and EA said that they will add defensive playmaker. The thing is that they want to do it in a newer next gen sense. They didn't want to add some thing old, to a new game. Mr. Ortiz when into great detail talking with me and Ron J about this issue. Before we met I felt like you to, but after he explained it..I understood EA point.

I don't know about that BigB the jury is out on that one. Can you elaborate more on what Mr. Ortiz said

I agree with EA on trying to fix this. And in the beginning I felt the same way as you did when I saw that the defensive playmaker was removed. Honestly, players have been abusing this feature. Calling engage 8 all game and making adjustments here and there is not what was intended. Yes there is some creativity involved when doing that, but it defeats the purpose of having a defensive playbook. Every play in our defensive book has a purpose and we have 5 audibles just in case we need to change things. It would be nice to Playmaker a CB or safety, but the system needs to be better in doing so. The global adjustments are not that bad if used properly. They have forced me to learn the ins and outs of my defensive book and Im sure that many others can benefit if they take the time out to use it. I am looking forward to seeing what it will be like in future games.

I'm glad. They really need to think hard about a better user interface for it IMO. Secondly, what I really would rather they do especially this year is give us front audibles on defense. These will be severely needed against the run. I know we can set audibles, but I feel the audibles you set should be special. This is where I would like to place my blitzes. But fronts will be needed to change the structure of your defense on the fly to stop the run. I have a way of doing it now but it would be nice to simply press X then up, down, left, right on the analog stick for front audibles instead of play audibles.

I can agree with that...
..BUT, the only problem that I have is they should have implemented something similar for '07. It's not like they didn't have plenty of time this year. I know, I know..."but it takes years to develop." <---This is not a valid excuse IMO. The programmers know the ins and outs by now and have had ample time to put it in the game. To completely remove defensive playmaker and not substitute for it is weak.

Yeah, I hear ya. How did you manage back in Madden 03? Just go back to the same style is the only thing I can come up with. Dont forget about the global plamakers. They can help somewhat.

My user skills are UP and I get all my INTs by user...this has nothing to do with user skills. I like to create my own defensive packages and to remove playmaker is a step backwards for '07, granted '08 will probably be better. In the longrun this is good, but '07 will not be as fun.
07 on the 360 really isn't going to have defensive playmaker?
