As a public service to some of our less fortunate posters here, I thought it would be nice if we have an ongoing educational thread to help people with their spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Rather than call people out individually, I thought we could have a "one stop shop" for all of your grammatical needs. I'll get this thing started, but anyone is welcome to contribute. Educating the youth of today takes a village...

Lesson 1: corps/core

When refering to a team's WRs as a group, the correct term is WR corps. A corps is "a body of persons acting together or associated under common direction." A core is "the hard or fibrous central part of certain fruits, such as the apple or pear, containing the seeds." The word "corps" is pronounced just like the word "core" though. The "ps" is silent.

Also, when describing an Impact Player, never say IP Player because it is like saying Impact Player Player. I have noticed this countless times. Also, NO ONE says "shotty" any more so refer to it as Shotgun: (Specific Formation)

Lesson #2: You not U

Don't be lazy. Type out the whole damn word or don't type at all.

Lesson #3: Periods are your friend.

Nobody likes reading an endless flow of mumble jumble thoughts that never ends and just keeps going and going like you know I think it is really annoying and it just is really hard to read and like I don't understand why people can't press the stupid little button to end the sentence because it really makes me mad and I feel like I'm going crazy when I read a post like this and it keeps going and going and I really would kill to see a period or a comma or an exclamation mark but it never comes and yeah ok I'm done now

Referring to the shotgun as "shotty" should bring a swift kick to the nuts and an automatic banning..........

you know why u see that??...its because when VG detects a certain amount of words that are consecutively in all caps...it changes it so it just capitalizes the first word of each letter....id rather have that than to havea bunch of ppl writing in all caps...

dominant/dominate

Dominant is an adjective that means "exercising the most influence or control."

Example: Adrian Peterson was dominant on NCAA 06.

Dominate is a verb meaning "to control, govern, or rule by superior authority or power."

Example: I will completely dominate anyone who steps to me in cribbage.

ludicrous/Ludacris

Ludicrous means "laughable or hilarious because of obvious absurdity or incongruity."

Example: "The effect momentum has on games of NCAA 07 is ludicrous."

Ludacris is an intentional misspelling of the word "ludicrous" used as a stage name by Atlanta rapper Chris Bridges.

Example: "The new album by Ludacris debuted at #1 on the charts."

Ironically, using "ludacris" when you mean "ludicrous" is actually kind of ludicrous.

Hysterical. You have my full support, M-dub. There's nothing like perusing your average thread on this board or a whole host of boards just like it to make me feel like I should be ashamed of playing video games. There should probably be a rule to the effect that if you can't manage to put together a sentence in the Queen's English, your mom/wife/girlfriend should take away your controller and put you to work on your grammar.

Queen's English? Heh. I'd be happy with regular old American English.

On the topic of languages, here's one that I haven't seen on VG, but bugs the hell out of me elsewhere...

mano a mano

The Spanish phrase "mano a mano" translates into "hand to hand." You know, fighting without weapons. As in "Alright, punk, let's settle this mano a mano!"

What it doesn't mean is "man to man." That would be "hombre a hombre."

Yet I don't know how many times I've heard people say dumb stuff like "We need to have a conversation mano a mano."

If you're going to insult someone, do it right. It should read:

What are you? The Word Police? Get a life, dude.

Yes, that comma can be a tricky little booger, but atleast you don't look like an uneducated bum that sits on his *** all day in his parents' basement, sipping on his can of Coors Light while trying to look cool on an online forum.;)

Here's a new one I see ALL THE TIME that drives me nuts... the new kick return view is NOT 1st person. It's 3rd person! If it was 1st person, the view would be from inside the helmet looking between the bars of the player's facemask.

Okay, it is official that the (...) can be used in place of periods, commas or other punctuation marks except the quotation or exclamation point...or (1) to transition to another sentence OR (2) to express an incomplete thought OR (3) Have the reader draw their own conclusion, therefore being a rhetorical sentence (fragment or otherwise).

I use the 3 periods alot...(See I used them because it may draw conclusion to the fact that you use them to or I may want to have a another sentence added)

This thread is fun...:D

Good thread. Here are a few:

1. Apostrophes are your friends. YOU ARE can be shortened to "you're," but YOUR is a word indicating possession. ("Your copy of NCAA 2007.")

2. There are three different forms of the word there.
- Their: Indicates possession. EX: Their dog jumped the fence and bit the postman on his left butt cheek.
- They're: The shortened form of "they are."
- There: Everything else.

3. There are three forms of the word to.
- Two: The number two.
- Too: May be used in place of the word ALSO. Is also used when referring to having too much of something. EX: "I played too many games of NCAA 2007 and my wife left with the postman."
- To: Everything else.

4. There is no "E" in the word ridiculous. The word "rediculous" does not exist.

I am just sadden by this thread.

First i need to apologize to sandman. I got into a little agrument with him about this very subject. I remember saying to him that there couldnt be a whole lot of people out here in the VG community that care a lot about this. Apparently i was wrong. Thats where i am sadden by this.

A year ago i went seaching for a some information to help me understand the game of EA sports football. Searching for information to help take my game to the next level. To help answer questions that i have had for awhile. And i found it. Right here in VG sports forums.

I never thought i would have to worrying about posting a comment and make sure i get a passing grade. I never thought that i would have individuals step up and comment not on what i said, but how i said it, or spelled it, or mis-typed it. I thought this could have been a site to be relaxed and outgoing on such issues that now plague a thread based solely on it.

Unfortunately, even if i was the most educated person out here, i dont feel the need to post on this website anymore. I always appreciate constructive help, but this just seems ridiculous. Now dont get me wrong, i think a good idea for a thread would be Football Grammer. Lets tackle the correct words and grammer for football. Lets hit the nicknames and unwritten rules for football. But lets not dive into English 101.

Football is about, the beer, chips, hotdogs, and intense rivalry with the next door neighboor. its about yelling and cheering for the home team, and being as stupid as you want to be. This thread, and others like it, shy completely away from that. You say shame on us, I say shame on you.

This is of course only my opinion, and the sounds of it, the only one at that. But maybe i got the wrong idea on how this thread and others like it operate. So i would just like to see some of you come out of your professional obsorbed world, and get back to the beer holding, chip munching slop that we all are. Until next time, hang onto the ball.

I'll be the first to admit that I make plenty of spelling mistakes. I know for a fact I do. That isn't frowned upon though. What I believe M-dub was talking about (or at least how I took it originally) was how some people on here try to be cute. By cute, I mean typing a complete sentence by capitalizing every letter to begin a word or mispelling things on purpose. Things like that are what's annoying.

You are correct, i do take it too directly. Let me try to help myself here by not helping myself.

Through all the years of schooling, my average English grade was proabably a B- to B. no better, and a lot worse. English (schooling in that matter) is not my thing. So i know i cant spell the best. i know my sentences are not properly structured, and i know if you talked to me i stumble on things occasionaly. So to have not one, but two people comment on my posts grammaticly, and now have a thread started based solely on it, i do take it a little directly.

Now i can look past it pretty easy(so no hard feelings), but thats why i said "let the beer holding, chip munching slops that we all are come out". AnD yEs StOp ThE AnNoYiNg ThInGs 2 !!!

I can honsestly say that you are not the problem dub was talking about when he directed this thread. I know I didn't have you in mind when I posted what I put up. I've even been pointed out for mis-spelling things, so that's no big deal, don't worry about that so much. The important thing to remember when posting is to be considerate of others. Try to break up your thoughts with some type of puctuation, be it a comma, period, explamation point, question mark or something. Last thing, don't type in all caps or capitalize every letter of every word. As long as you stick to those rules, no one will have a big deal with what you type. Believe me, I use to not capitalize every word to start off a sentence, but it just looks better now that I started doing it.

Don't take it personal man. It's all good.

Volunteer77

guitarchtitect, I wouldn't want you to leave us on something like this. I personally don't care about misspellings or proper sentence structure or anything like that. I posted what I did to M Dub as a joke and I'm sure he has or will take it that way.

I personally don't care much for the posts that barely resemble the English language. I mean when you spell "with" like "wiff" or "the" as "teh" or "da", that's annoying. Another type of post that is annoying "CAN YOU TELL ME A GOOD TEAM THAT I CAN SCRAMBLE WITH AND THROW LONG BOMBS IT WOULD BE GREAT SO I CAN GO TO THE TOP OF THE LEADERBOARDS AND STAY THERE I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LEET WITH QBS LIKE MIKE VICK I AM THE BEST YOU CAN'T BEAT ME SO DONT EVEN TRY SUCKER IF YOU WANT TO GET BEAT BY ME ADD ME MY GAMERTAG IS 1337SCRAMBLAHHH1988

I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi, but I try to avoid berating individuals for their raping of the English language as long as it's something small.

For instance, I'm will never say anything about a typo or placing an ellipsis where a period should be or a comma instead of a colon or semicolon. Even consistent misuse of words and phrases along with misspelling the same word repeatedly (ie: the common misspelling of "ridiculous") are not that big of a deal. Those are just minute details that can be overlooked. I mean, it's not my job to educate people when they're trying to talk about how to stop a nano-blitz...not to mention that no one wants to be corrected in the first place. ;)

That said, I absolutely abhor the usage of vernacular when typing. If you're from St. Lois and you speak like Nelly, that's fine, but there is no need to do so when you type. It's one thing to use cultural slang in casual conversation, but to do so in writing is just silly. It illustrates the individual's longing for acceptance, as usage of vernacular in print is commonly used to manipulate the reader into identifying with them based on their speech pattern rather than their actual opinions…often because they have nothing substantial to say in the first place.

Moving on, guitarchtitect, you're taking this thread waaaaay to personally. No one is talking directly to you or bashing you for the way you type. In fact, the whole thread is respectful due to the lack of names being named. This is simply a helpful thread for people to vent and for others to read if they want some assistance. Lighten up.

I am doing exactly what you just said, VENTING. I am taking this just as serious as if you told me the best way to beat the option play is to have a spy. I want to clear something up then if i can, i didnt say that any one was directing this towards me, but instead i didnt totally agree with the purpose of it. I was giving my opinion on the spelling and grammatical issues on this website. I agree with what you said at the beginning of your post. I am not here to educate anyone, and i am not here to be educated.

So i was just venting. I know it is coming across a little more intense that what i am thinking, but what can i do. Type in really small letters so i dont seem so angry.

Yea i knew i wasnt very clear on that. What i was saying is, if you tell me how to do something better for the game, i will take it seriously. It was something typed to inform others. So i take that just as serious as anything else. That still doesnt make sense does it? Ah forget it.

Agreed, but I think Born gets a pass on this. For some reason, when he types words like "cain't" it just cracks me up every time.

One thing we all agreed on was that the overall maturity level on this board is much higher than what you find elsewhere. This isn't a board full of guys shooting gang signs at each other. It isn't a board full of high school punks talking trash. It isn't a board full of social lepers sitting behind their keyboards trying to impress each other.

The participants here tend to be a little older, a lot more mature, with real jobs, and real sex lives. A typical board member here is 31 years old, making $30,000 a year, with a wife or steady girlfriend. He views his gaming as an outlet for his competitive drive and a great diversion from real life. He doesn't view gaming AS real life.

Part of the reason why so many of us care about spelling and grammar here is that we know that if the day comes when the vast majority of posters here don't care about such things, then the day will have come to leave. Because it will mean the board has been taken over by the thugs with social leprosy. And we just don't want to see that.

A couple typos here and there? Hey, no problem. I even make one from time to time. But if you just don't care about how your message comes across, many of us will be tuning you out.

This thread is fun...:D
woot woot!!!....thank you...that can be our man law...but whats sad is...when i go to type a english paper or something...this carries over and i have to go back and change everything....lol...its just a habit nowadays...
