If you're playing the CPU, you can take advantage of their tendencies, and
set yourself up for easy Punt Returns.
1) Choose the Punt Return play with the two blockers away from the
near side of the field.
2) hold the returner back, audible to a normal defense, then audible to
your original return (after the CPU audibles)
3) take control of the wide side defender, and bring him back for blocking
support on the near side of the field.
4) After the punt, take the returner right down the sideline for an
easy touchdown, following his convoy of blockers.
Here are a few pictures to illustrate my point:
.............(PR)

S.X....B.B.X.X.X.X.X......X.X
O..|......O.O.O.O.O......O
...|....O.....|....O
...|..........|O
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........O
Key:
(PR) = Punt Returner
B = Blockers
O = Offensive Players
X = Other Defensive Players
S = Special Player
| = Hash Marks
After you call the correct play, take control
of the punt returner, then, audible to a normal
defense. It does not matter which defense you
choose, just audible to a normal defense.
(This is why you take control of the punt
returner, to make sure that he does not
come down towards the line of scrimmage as he
would, if you audibled to a normal defense.)
In response to this, the CPU WILL ALWAYS ADJUST:
The CPU will audible to the max protect punt
formation.
Now, you just audible back to your original
play. On PS2, this is [] + L2.
After you audible to your original play, take
control of the "special" player, marked "S"
This is where you will move him, and how it
will look, by the time the offense gets ready
to punt the ball:
.............(PR)
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........S<--- look where he is now
...|..........|<--- about 10-15 yards off the line.
...|..........|
...X....B.B.X.X.X.X......X.X
...|.....O.O.O.O.O.O.O
...|.......O..|....O
...|..........|..O
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........O
What is important to realize is that the position
of the ball on the field (in relation to the hash
marks) has a LARGE EFFECT on where the CPU wants
to punt the ball. Best practice tells everyone
to punt the ball to the nearest sideline, as that
is where they can put the most coverage. The
CPU will do this ALMOST EVERY SINGLE TIME. Even
when they are in max protect, and don't have
hardly anyone going out to cover.
This is what the stuff looks like, a few
seconds later, when the PUNT RETURNER IS
about to receive the ball after it is kicked:
..............|......(PR)
...|..........|
...|..........|......B..B <--- two blockers help you to get going
...|..........|
...|..........|...........S<--- special guy is way out here leading the way!
...|.....X....|
...|......O.O.|....O.O..X <--- look a few chumps come after you, but you
...|..........|.............<--- have more blockers than they have gunners.
............X.X.X.X......X
...|.......O.O.O.O.O.
...|..........|....
...|..........|..O
...|..........|
...|..........|
...|..........O
From looking at the above diagram, you
can obviously see that you should pretty much
have an excellent chance of at least getting
back to the LOS, if not further down.
Notes: Some people would just say to have
"punt block" as one of your audibles. But I
disagree, as that is a waste of one of the
five audibles you could use on defense. This way,
you still maintain your five defensive audibles.
Why waste an audible on a special teams play when
you can just hold back the returner and audible?
Anyway, I pretty much know this works (at least
it works quite well on mediocre opponents)
Playing All-American, Notre Dame vs. Air Force,
Tom Zbikowski (sp?) has three punt return
touchdowns in a row, using this tactic.
Seriously, using this tactic, you might find yourself chased by the
upback, or a few oline, as you sprint towards the end zone, as all the
gunners either get outnumbered/blocked, and/or they're on the other side
of the field, useless against your short sprint to the endzone.
Have a nice day!
