This scheme is incredibly simple. We bring the heat with 4 or 5 guys in this little scheme. We are only looking for two things in a play:
1.) The blitz angle of the OLB(s)
2.) The level of coverage
So, 4-3 users, go into your playbooks. Two helpful plays will be "Mid Rush" and "Hog Buck 3".
Both are Cover 3 zone blitzes. Using or pre-snap playmaker, we can make tons of adjustments.
Here is what you do:
1.) Make sure you have your best speed on one side of the defense; example for Packers: put AJ Hawk and KGB on same side as a DE and OLB tandem
2.) Come out in a play where the blitz angle of the LOLB (right side of screen) is similar or the same as "Mid Rush" and "Hog Buck 3".
3.) Take the DE on the side of the blitzing LOLB and lift him off the line about 2 yards. Switch to your LOLB. The DE will go back to his spot, but line-up about 1/2 yard further back. Take the LOLB and place him where the DE originally was (which will be directly in front of the DE).
4.) Adjust coverage. One thing I like to do is man up my CBs, bump them on the WRs, then lift them about 3 yards back (creates a delayed BNR effect). Then I make sure the flats (usually a blitz outlet) are covered. Then I roam with the safety.
Results:
At the snap, the LOLB or DE will slam in to the OT and many times one of them will shoot free. The reason we move them where we do is that this technique gets them downfield faster.
Tips:
Against the run you just want to adjust the rest of your defense accordingly. I usually move my MLB over the bubble on the rightside A-gap, and just a little to the right. I then slide my ROLB over the weakside A-gap about 3 yards off the line. Finally I move the FS closer to the line, then I control him or the FS.
