This guy ate me up with 213 yards rushing and 400 yards passing.

Still was a close game 31-34 but I thought 3-4 would do better than that. gee wiz

Dawg Im Right There With U The 3-4 Is Just Not The Thing. Well I Guess People Are Going To Say We Don't Know How To Use It Correctly Well Who Cares. The Book Blows I Tried Using It Against My Bro Who Likes To Run To The Outside And He Just Went Up The Middle And The Outside To Gain Who Knows How Many Yards. It Sucks For The Pass N The Run. But Like In Your Case I Still Didn't Lose By That Much. But Im Sticking To Mah Good Ol' Balanced Playbook 4-6 Normal With The Speed Package Rules.;)

It's actually a really good defense. But it takes a lot of modification. There's a lot more scheming involved, not like the 4-3 where you could just pick a 4-3-2ManUnder and it'll work just fine for the most part, as with the 3-4 it works a lot different, most of the time you have to build and modify your plays. Lots of shifting, playmakering and what not. Main thing I try to do is be very aggressive because I believe it's the way the 3-4 should be ran. I actually feel I do a lot better job stopping the run with my front 7 out of the various 3-4 alignments than I do with my front 7 from the 4-3 alignments. And vs. the pass, I feel I'm able to create a lot more heat without sacrificing as much coverage, it's possible to rush only 3 or 4 and still get good heat with overloads, I personally like to rush atleast 5 though the majority of the time, especially if in zone. I use the Chargers and their perfectly built for it as well, their LBs are beastly and they got a big tough D-line.

That could be one of the problems as well, what teams are you guys using?

You cant run the 3-4 without the right personel. I run 3-4 almost 75% of the game and I do a damn good job of stopping the run. Like Booboo said, you have to be doing alot of line shifts and LB shifts and cover up the gaps, playmaker your line crash's, drop linemen in coverage, they bat the ball down allll the time for me.

Its a Decent Defense its just with Random Angles it isnt as effective as it should be.

I will co-sign that shifting has really helped me get some pressure off the edges. I try and time the snap and shift my LB's to the side where I am bringing the pressure. If I do it to early then they will just look flats to the side I am blitzing from.

for the run up the middle I have been using normal 3-4 and man under. I assign the 2nd MLB in the yellow zone to the RB and fill the gap with the safety. You can also call the Pinch from any of the 3-4 fronts if you really think they are running up the middle.

I run with the Bengals and they do alright with it. I wish I had some more speed at OLB, but Adams does a good job of stuffing the middle and making opponents run to the outside.

The flats ain't always neccessarily open in that setup your talking about, you can still contain them. For example, take a Cover3 or Engage8. Lets say you shifted your Linebackers to the right with the intention to blitz the LOLB off the edge, then what you then do is playmakering the LILB to a flat zone, he then takes what have been the initial responsibility of the LOLB. That kind of shift basically turns it into a 4-3 type alignment. That's what I really like about the 3-4 because you can blitz and still roll the coverage over to help close the holes. You can rush 4 at times with a setup like that and still get really good heat and coverage. If you overload like that, chances are your opponent will have to use an extra blocker and the chances of a coverage sack or INT go up. 3-4 is sick like that because you can really force your opponent to use extra protection such as the TE/backs blocking and that only leaves you with the WRs to worry about which you can manually double up on and if there's no flat threat your usually good to go. It's a scheme that can mentally **** with your opponent if you use it right. The heat can also be so good that you can mix in more riskier coverages such as Cover2/Cover2Sink plays and hope for an INT off a quick pass.

No offense or defense does well or doesn't. It is only you who do well,
or don't - and the team, and playbooks you chose - are merely tools.

I'll have to agree with the GAV kid.

No way does the 3-4 suck, you just need to know what your doing with it.Like i love how you can set up plays that look like they are heavy all out blitzes but are actually zone coverage with one guy blitzing lol.

3-4 is by far the best base formation

A lot easier to get pressure via zone blitzing and bringing 5+ men since your OLB's have (if you know how to make the scheme work) a HUGE speed/acc advantage over linemen and STR advantage over backs and TEs

Run stopping wise, you have basically 3 DTs (2 Run stopping ends + 1 NT) that should at least occupy 3 guys...and many times shed them and get to the ball carrier. If not that leaves 2 guys out of your front seven to move in for the tackle and leaves your safeties relatively free to close in

I have a question....are you able to stop ppl that run out of the I form twin TE set with the 3-4 defense? I cant even stop it with 4-3 defense!!!!

The 3-4 D does nothing by itself. Neither does any other
book. Its all up to YOU.

It can of course, but there ain't really no one miracle setup that stops any run. I personally find the 3-4 to be the most consistant vs. the run, but I do a lot of on the fly adjustments that are hard to explain because their more based on instincts, the situation and I also like to control my ILBs at times so I help out as well manually. One thing I do for sure, is blitz A LOT especially out of Zone Cover3 setups such as Engage8 and from blitzing a lot I have LBs shooting the gaps and most often than not they play the run aggressively and come off blocks or dodge them. Engage8 "flipped" is pretty much my go-to play when I use the 3-4 base, but I modify the ***** out of it in different ways so it has some pass coverage behind the blitz. For one I notice that my blitzing OLBs come off blocks quicker or dodge them better as opposed to DEs in a 4-3, at times my OLBs fly str8 into the backfield and cause disruption, it's rare that I've seen DEs do that unless the D-line is spread, so there's something about the "blitz" that makes them more aggressive and harder to block. The 3-4 is just a sick scheme, the angles are awesome. I also notice that vs. the pass my blitzing OLBs get pancaked a lot less than DEs from a 4-3. I usually pinch my D-line most of the time or shift it left or right, I hardly ever spread it out.

BTW, I ain't trying to say that the 3-4 is a better scheme to run than the 4-3 because I'm basing everything I say mostly on the Chargers. The Chargers by default are better built for the 3-4. However, what I am trying to say is I personally have had a lot more success using the 3-4. I find the 3-4 to be a lot more compliant with the schemes I like to run, for example, if I setup an outside blitz from the 3-4 with one of my OLBs or both, I can usually count on it getting in and doing exactly what it's suppose to do, as opposed to the 4-3, I find it to be a lot more random. For example, I can't count on a 4man rush to get in the way I want it to get in out of the 4-3 (the outside containment is just not that good and the stunting don't work that good IMO), however with the 3-4 I usually can. The 3-4's front 7 is just really flexible and I like that. In other words, I can see things a lot more clearly with the 3-4 and I can visualize how things will happen.

Very true. You have to make the defense work. It won't do it itself. And the 3-4 is a good D. If your team has good linebackers it should work out.

Not if your D-linemen suck
Your LBs will get blown away by the O-line

Just get huge D-linemen and fast and strong LBs and then it should work out

Can the Ravens do a 3-4 in Madden? I know they can in real life along with every other front in football LOL. They have really versatile LB's and DL so I'm thinking yes.
Any feedback is great..
