View Full Version : PS3s EVERYWHERE
I was out and about today....
And everywhere I went, they had plenty of PS3s in stock. Sitting out, waiting to be bought.
I can't say I remember the same phenomenon when the 360 came out. Seems that everytime THEY hit the shelves, they were snatched up. Took 12 months before you'd see on on a shelf on a regular basis.

Yeah. I see them. But to be honest the reason why they are there I think is that the machine has to compete with the Wii. More people seem to be buying the Wii primarily because of price and the Nintendo franchises and the new controller seems interesting.

I think the lack of must have games is the problem. Price might be a factor as I know several people saving up for one.

I think most of the people that are gonna buy a next-gen unit have bought them by now.
I don't see PS3 hitting the 10 million sold mark by this time next year like the 360 just did.
With the game's being the same and little demand for HD-DVD OR Blu-Ray movies it looks like Sony made a big mistake in delaying so long with nothing in the game performance department to justify people's wait or expense.

Well, just like VHS vs Beta, the porn industry has chosen non-Sony. Just saw an article saying they've picked HD over Blu-ray which is a bad sign for Blu-ray's future.

It'll be interesting to see what happens this year.
The PS3 launch actually sold more units than did the XBox 360 launch. Part of the reason why there weren't any 360's on the shelves might have been because of the defects the 360 had at launch and all of the exchanges.
It'll be surprising if either format HD-DVD or BluRay has much of an affect on the market. I don't remember the numbers but the amount of people with HD TV's is extremely low. There just isn't much of a market.
This fall will tell a lot of what happens. There will be a lot more next gen titles out.

I'm one of those people without HDTV, so I bought a gaming system strictly for the gaming.
When I found out that PS3 was going to be 700 bucks and virtually no good games at release, it made my decision real easy.
I think very few people want to use their gaming system as an all-in-one deal.

I concur. However I still like both systems. I can see the PS3 in about 2 years jumping off. I agree though, and the issue with the PS3 is they are trying to force you to upgrade your TV!!!!!!!
Thank God I got my 1080P TV for $500. What a bargain for me (Eddy Murphy haters:D ).
I got it and it looks swell with the xbox 360!!!!!! The size of the TV is 37" but still looks good for $500!!!!!!!!

Actually it was because there were more PS3's available at launch, the much bally=hooed "PS3 hit 1 million sold before the 360" news was a little faulty, since the 360 didn't have 1 million units available till much later. We'll see how long it takes PS3 to hit 10 million.

My boy's friend!!!!! He had a Westinghouse 37" HDTV and upgraded and he just wanted to get ride of it. It does not have HDMI, but I have nothing in my house that does have it except maybe my DTV HD box. I got it for a steal of a price I know. It does have DVI though which is just as good and it has optical inputs. I know I have got a great deal. Now I have 2 HDTV's and a 3rd will be coming in the near future.

You drop a high system, with no smash games to go with it = failure.
I can easily afford a ps3, but that shyt is gettin Monster blitzed by the Wii. Im still playing Zelda to this day. And I love it.....for only $250.00.
The Sony marketing was horrible. They should not have rushed that shyt so fast. On top of that, they will come out with a slim one in about a year, just like the ps2. You cant even play the ps3 in the store, cause it overheats so dayum much. Nobody is gonna pay money for bullshyt. Point blank period.

I'm still trying to figure out the Wii. There's nothing wrong with it at all. But they put out a box that has slightly inferior specs than the original XBox, stick a new controller on it that senses motion, and all of a sudden it's "revolutionary." All Microsoft or Sony has to do is come out with a similar controller and a handful of games to use the controller.
Oh, and Sony's controller also senses motion. Hmmm.

Ummm....It was about 4-5 years after the PS2 came out until the slim one was released.
How was the PS3 rushed?
Find one story of someone's personal PS3 overheating. Those aren't real PS3's in the stores (from what I understand). The thing you see behind the glass is just a dummy unit. There is a beta PS3 in the display behind it.
Apparently over a million people in the US have paid for that bullshyt. Slightly more than nobody.

LOL, ever hear of a company named Apple? How many games are running on their system, LOL! When Rainbow 6, Motorstorm, HeavenlySword, Killzone, Metal Gear, etc comes out, someone will buy the system to play only one or 2 of the second wave games, then you'll see a huge jump in sales. Novemeber/December saw a huge jump in Blu Ray disc sales which are topping HD DVD's. :D

Of that 100 million how many were because of the dreaded DRe and other issues with the PS2? Does the fact that I bought 3 systems when in fact should have had only 1 (Class Action Lawsuit) figure into the 100 Million sold figure?
Personally I think the sales numbers should reflect the recalls the lawsuits and the number of systems a person bought and had repaired into this equation. Just to be fair it should be for all systems. IMO though those PS2 numbers were bloated because of their inability to address the real problem in the 1st place, DRE.

Why are the ps3 still sittin in the stores? How come you cant find a Wii? Hands down the Wii blew the Ps3 out the water this year. I want all you ps3 guys to say it with me like the guy from Sony Kutaragi should, " AW MAN, I THINK I FUGGED UP!" Its ok to say you fugged up.
Im a sony guy, dont get me wrong, but my ps2 and Wii are holding it down right now.
You want to tell me what they are GOING to sell in the future.....what about now? All I am hearing is, " Well wait till this game drops for ps3, or what till that game drops for ps3"....what difference is it going to make when people dont want the system to play it on?
Something is wrong with the PS3. It may be the marketing, may be the price, but something is wrong. Why in the hell would you put a dummy unit in the display case anyway? Thats stupid....show me what Im about to fork over all this money for....an overheating system. In the next generation console war, the PS3 is LAST. Dig up the links on the console numbers sold to date....not what has been shipped, SOLD.

Best New Console:
Sony PlayStation 3
Console launch years only come around twice a decade or so, and they're always guaranteed to be exciting years. The 360 matured dramatically since this time last year and its second-generation titles like Gears of War and CoD3 made the PlayStation 3's job of shocking the world with its immense power rather difficult.
Nintendo's Wii launched to massive mainstream applause and a lot of hope has been placed in the potential for gaming innovation via the console's unique controller. Nintendo disappointed some, however, by choosing not embrace HDTV or to compete with Sony and Microsoft in processing power. The Wii can't even play normal DVDs.
Judging the consoles based upon a broad perspective that includes software now available and coming in the future an entirely different argument could be formulated. However, from a hardware perspective, the PS3 is by far the more interesting console. Though the launch software hasn't blown anyone away, the 360's launch titles were equally unimpressive, and the system will certainly mature. Sony's embrace of the PS3 as a computer rather than just a console, and the availability of supported Linux distributions for the console will also develop and will likely bear entirely unexpected fruit in future.

See, here's my thing.
I think the PS3 will catch up to the 360 in terms of gaming. BUT, I also think it will take them a year, just like the 360.
That year head start is already kicking Sony's butt, and it will only get worse once MS drops the price of the 360 by 100 bucks, which should happen in a couple months.
I mentioned the NeoGeo before in previous posts. That gaming system was ahead of its time, too, and blew the others away in terms of graphics. But the price and the slow development of games killed it.
The fact that the 360 is already easy to develop for and that normally PS exclusive titles are jumping ship is just one of many issues for Sony and I think will amount for a large loss in the console wars.
Sometimes the "best" console doesn't always win. That IGN article is citing POTENTIAL as its key to success for PS3, and I don't know that a majority of people will drop a grand on potential.

Very true. Only time will tell. MS is already dropping $100 off the console in various promotions. I've seen various sales at stores around where I live selling 360's for $100 off. No bundles or anything, just $100 off.
The "PS3 is hard to develop for" mantra is overrated and Microsoft propaganda. The PS3 uses OpenGL for graphics which developers are VERY comfortable with. With the PS1 and PS2, Sony provided tools and libraries for developers to program with. Some developers asked for the ability to program down to machine level and Sony granted it. People mistook those people trying to be innovative and squeeze every bit of power out of the PS2 as the PS2 being hard to program for.
The PS3 uses industry standard programming languages just like the 360. The tools may be "different" than what someone who programs for PC's uses, but it is not "harder." Although there may be a learning curve.
Developers are just getting better with the 360 tools now, developing the "second generation" 360 titles.
Same thing will happen for Wii and PS3.
John Carmack, the guy going around telling everyone that will listen that the PS3 is hard to program for is a PC developer (Doom and Quake) and a Microsoft insider. He's collaborated with MS on a bunch of 360 projects. Of course, at the end of all of his statements, he adds that he is going to release PS3 titles.

Well, I also know dudes at Epic games, and they say the same stuff; that the PS3 is a pain to develop for. Impossible? No. But enough of a bear to have exclusive titles scrambling. The pain lies in the tools, and how clunky they are. The MS Developer kits are much smaller and more "user-friendly." The learning curve issue is also why Mac still can't take much more of the market from PCs, Linux from Windows, etc. People are lazy, and they won't try to learn more difficult things if the ones they already know work fine.
My contention has always been that both systems are nearly identical, with the PS3 having a SLIGHT edge in potential, but that timing is critical, and Sony has blown that aspect every step of the way thus far.
MS is losing 100 bucks per system now, but they plan on making all that back in Live subscriptions, games, accessories, etc. That's where all the real money is.

LMAO...I just reread the article from October 2000:
The proof of a game platform is in the playing, and by that measure PS2 is getting mixed reviews. The gaming community has been grousing about the lack of top-grade games available at launch. There are only 26 PS2 software titles, and Sony is promising about 50 by the end of the year. The list contains some reputed standouts, including Madden NFL 2001 (which some are calling PlayStation2's killer app) and the snowboarding game SSX. But many of the most eagerly anticipated titles, like Metal Gear Solid 2 and the Bouncer, won't be available until spring at the earliest.
The early word on the playing experience--outside of Sony's launch party--is not particularly enthusiastic. "There is nothing on the PS2 that I've seen that gave me that jaw-dropping feeling I got with the Sega Dreamcast last year," says Dan Clark, 29, CEO of a New Hampshire credit union and an active gamer. Madden NFL 2001 is good, he says, but no better than games currently available on Dreamcast.
Part of the reason for the underwhelming array of games, gamemakers say, is that PS2 is hard to program for. "The PS2 is definitely more powerful than Dreamcast," says John Carmack, the multimillionaire, ponytailed master gamer behind legendary shooters like Doom and Quake. "But it's less convenient to extract performance from it." This is, however, a predictable stage in the gaming cycle: it's hard for gamemakers to do their best work on a platform that isn't available yet. The best PlayStation2 games are yet to come.
Who benefits if PS2 lags? Clearly Sega, the only other gamemaker with a next-generation platform on the market. Sega has been on a roll lately, racking up an installed base of 5 million units. That's way below the original PlayStation but far more than anyone would have guessed when the system was launched 15 months ago. And Sega's Dreamcast is outselling Nintendo 64. Sega also has a key advantage over the competition: its Sega Net makes it the only console that currently allows for online gaming.

Here's an e-mail I got the other day. This is the kind of stuff you don't get from mainstream "we hate Sony" media:
Waterloo, Ontario - January 11, 2007 - RapidMind and Terra Soft announced
today that they have teamed up to make application development for the
PLAYSTATION(R)3 easier than ever. As part of an agreement with Sony Computer
Entertainment Incorporated, Terra Soft Solutions announced the release of
Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3(TM). With the RapidMind Development Platform,
developers can easily create applications that will run on the PS3, as well
as other hardware solutions based on the Cell Broadband Engine(TM).
RapidMind will be providing a full-featured evaluation version of the
RapidMind Development Platform v2.0 for distribution from Terra Soft's
YDL.net Enhanced accounts. "It's exciting to imagine what will happen when
you put a supercomputer-class PS3 with a great OS into the hands of
developers," said Ray DePaul, RapidMind President and CEO. "Developers are
eager to take advantage of the Cell BE and the PS3 without the need to
understand the underlying architecture of this complex multi-core processor.
The RapidMind platform makes that possible."
PS3 is the latest interactive entertainment console from Sony, designed for a
cutting-edge gaming experience. The PS3 incorporates the Cell BE processor
which was created by IBM, Sony, and Toshiba for more than gaming. The Cell BE
is already available from IBM in the form of a blade for the IBM
BladeCenter(R) Server as well as from Mercury Computer Systems in several
form factors.
"The PS3 places a supercomputer in the home," said Kai Staats, Terra Soft CEO.
"Yellow Dog Linux provides a complete Linux OS for the PS3 resulting in a
very powerful computing platform. We are thrilled to be working with
RapidMind to make this platform more accessible for professional developers
and hobbyists alike." Developer's now have an excellent development platform
to develop applications for the Cell BE, whether for deployment on the PS3 or
as a jumping off point for deployments to other Cell BE based products,
including those from IBM, Sony, or Mercury.
RapidMind will also be participating in a Hack-a-thon (www.hpc-consortium.net)
from January 20th to the 26th for the optimization of applications for the
Cell BE, hosted by Terra Soft at their Loveland, Colorado headquarters.
RapidMind, along with organizations such as Argonne, Oak Ridge, Colorado
State, IBM, Mercury, and Tungsten Graphics have committed resources with
dozens of other labs, universities, and individuals planning to participate.
The intent of this event is to create a set of application examples to
showcase the potential of the Cell BE.

as other hardware solutions based on the Cell Broadband Engine(TM).

Blu-ray disk manufacturers would not make their disks because Sony doesn't want porn on Blu-ray. They did the same thing with Betamax, Sony wouldn't allow porn on them.
I don't think either format is going to do much of anything. By the time HD content becomes relevent, downloading is going to be the delivery channel of choice.
Besides, porn only makes up about 2% of DVD sales now and is dying fast. The Internet and Pay Per View has been growing the last couple of years as the medium of choice. Those choices weren't available when the VHS/Betamax war was going on.

Ok, 100,000,000 - 2.
lol
Seriously, dunno. I have my launch PS2 and it's still running today.
LMAO good one now what about the lawsuit and the millions who bought new machines because of this? Like I said I seriously believe the PS2 numbers were inflated because of millions of people buying 2 systems because Sony was charging at one point $125 to get them fixed, when it was $200 or $150 to get a new system with a new warranty.
Thats was funny though I like that. Still can't get away from that lawsuit issue. I heard MS has one too for the 360 but I think MS learned well from what Sony did not want to do.

lol...MS had one with the original XBox too. The DVD players were bad I believe.
I think the one you are talking about with the PS2 was because the laser diodes would go bad. From the people I know who had bad ones, all you had to do was mention laser problem and they would fix your PS2 for free. My brother's laser went bad, he sent it them 2nd day air on a Friday, he had it back from Sony by the next Friday fixed at no charge.
The Ring of Death thing with the 360 is really bad. Search it on Google. Some people are on their 3rd or 4th 360.

I have all kinds of feelings on this topic, but I will keep it short.
I own a 360 and a Wii.;)
If you were to compare the systems to NFL teams(IMO) it would go like this:
360 = New England Patriots - They win. They have a winning formula (Xbox live, games) a great QB (CEO) and a good defense (Patents on Live, HALO3, GOW)
Wii = New Orleans Saints / Gimmicky offense (controller) that is effective. No one expected them (it) to make it this far. Cinderella team (console). Came back after Hurricane (Gamecube) and has impressed fans.
PS3 = Arizona Cardinals / Looks great in preseason (prelaunch), does okay for the first game (launch), then fades down the stretch, BUT.. next year always looks promising. Cardinal fans like to point out that their great players, Edgerrin James (Blu-Ray) Larry Fitzgerald (Linux) ,Anquan Boldin (Six-Axis) and Matt Leinart (PS3 processor) will improve the next year, especially since they upgraded at QB, replacing Kurt Warner (PS2 Processor).

Best comparison of the "console wars" by far. lmao. Also very fitting for a "Madden Forum"!
I also own a 360 and a Wii, but I realize that people who want a PS3 are going to buy one regardless of what anybody tells them. I have no interest in it b/c I don't play any of Sony's exclusive games so the system doesn't appeal to me. Same for those who don't like 360's exclusives. I've stopped arguing w/people over it. Its like politics, they'll believe what they want to believe. I bought two 360s at launch. One I had to send back after 4 months and got a new one from M$ in a week and have not had a problem since (I also put the Nyco inter-cooler on it after I got it back). The 2nd has never had an intercooler and it has not had a problem yet. I had a PS2 since launch and never had a problem w/it before I sold it. I also didn't watch very many dvds on it so that may be why my laser didn't burn out.
I don't get in the "console arguments" anymore, I just tell them to enjoy the one they have. I do think its funny when someone goes all apesh*t over a blue-ray movie but then I show them a HD-DVD or HD download on 360 and they have nothing to say b/c it looks just as good and in some instances better.
Anyway, hilarious comparison....I might make it a sig!

:D It's all funny to me I guess. Who cares about BluRay and HD DVD? I like to play video games, so I play video games. I didn't buy a 360 until a few months ago. I used the money I got from selling the 3 PS3s I had.. LOL..
I am glad the Wii doesn't have a DVD player.. I already have two in my entertainment cabinet (DVD player/360).
I always though someone would put one of my alleged 'homer' statements in a sig! Not the smartest thing I ever said in 700+ posts! lol Yay!

I'm with u Ken. I don't own a HD-DVD player nor a Blue-ray one. My God-child's father (and one of my best friends) lives 5 mins from me and has all 3 systems on a 61-inch 1080p tv. I take them there so there can be NO excuses and they get the best possible picture from both formats (even though its a Sony tv...u'd think the PS3 would get the edge!). Its mostly PS3 owners who I show this too. 2 of them have 360s as well but haven't downloaded any of the movies yet and don't have the add-on dvd player (and they are eager to see a BR movie on a big a** screen!). If the PS3 didnt' COME with a dvd player, they wouldn't even give a sh*t. Once I show them the two head-to-head they see my point about there being very little difference. You should REALLY see how they get the "dumb" look when I show them the quality of a HD download BEFORE I load up a movie. They are REALLY speechless then.
I don't need another dvd player either. I have my "Wii60" hooked up to my 52-in hdtv (even got component cables for my Wii...Zelda in 480p is HOT!) In my bedroom I have a 1080i-upconverting dvd player on the 26-in hdtv I have in there. I'm not waisting any more money buying movies I've already seen that I won't really watch again. I basically rent movies that I missed or skipped in theaters, so 360s movie downloads are ideal for me. I was on a rampage at one point going to Circity City and Best Buy every Tues to buy $75-$150 worth of dvds, then realized I wasn't even watching the damn things. I have several that I have never unwrapped. No way am I paying nearly twice that for a hd movie to suffer the same fate.

I'd like to add to my comparison:
PS2 = Dallas Cowboys. Always reliable, usually does well, but caves under pressure (load times). Changed from an old, immobile QB to a slimmer, mobile QB (Old PS2 - Slim PS2). Added Terrell Owens to be more competitive (Internet Connectivity from Old to Slim). When you don't pay good money for a holder, things go awry. (cools better on optional stand)
America's Team? (Free online service = you get what you pay for.. )
Nintendo DS = Pittsburgh Steelers. A new QB and some veterans took the team to a superbowl victory (Mario on a comeback! New SMB, 2nd best selling game of year, 1st for portable) Then next year faltered a bit. (8-8 record) Set to regain Steeler glory next year (DS on a tear. Sold a gang during Christmas season)
PSP = Cincy Bengals. Awesome talent with Palmer, Chad and T.J. (MP3, PDA, MOVIES) Intitially things seemed awesome, then Kimo Von Oelhoefen showed up (PSP Recall) Pretty popular, but not able to take over due to success of Pittsburgh Steelers (Nintendo DS)
IPhone = Atlanta Falcons. Looks great on paper. New features (Bobby P.) but how will it perform underpressure?

Your right but still Sony lost their lawsuit. MS is fighting theirs now, and even added extended 1 year warranty's because of the 3 rings of death which caught me as well. The difference between MS and Sony, MS did not try to sweep it under the rug. I shipped mine back and got it 2 days after it got there. Total time away was 4 days. Sony when I had my DRE problems was min 1 week and no swapping of consoles, and a hastle.
Makes no difference though it just reminds me of blowing into a cartridge back in the day when it would not work in the atari or intellivision. You get mad, blow the cartridge, put it in and if that didn't work you slammed it in their. Every system I know has had issues, and they includes faulty controllers.:D

I don't think that 2 mil shipped equates to 2 mil SOLD. i doubt they have 2 mil SOLD in the U.S. yet. And do the sold numbers account for units returned for refunds? Or do they count them twice if it gets resold? (i.e. not counting the return as a negative, but counting the resale again as basically 2 sales on 1 system.)

So we agree that the buzz for the PS3 is fading?
Sure seems like it.
Just look at the threads on this Madden site for 360 games.
Now that Sony has lost GTA, Assassin's Creed, and Virtua Fighter (Game Informer confirms this month that it's coming out on 360 3 months after the PS3 release) it's only got a few potential exclusives that might pull people in. And Halo 3 will be hitting when PS3 gets it's holiday momentum started next fall.
Gears sold 2 million copies to Resistance's 80k, now there's far more 360's out there so those #'s are skewed, but With so few decent launch titles the PS3 is having trouble finding an 'identity game'.
360 had a terrible launch library as well....but that was over a year ago now. I don't know anyone that's interested in the PS3, most are underwhelmed. I teach and I don't have 1 kid out of the 200 I've taught this year that owns a PS3 or wants one. Many have 360's, several have Wii's. The wait was a bad move by Sony.

Sony has been there done that. The trinity will come though like they have always done in the past. PS1 FF-VII, Gran Turismo 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid, history repeats, PS2 FF-IX, FF-X, FF-XII, XII, Gran Turismo 3 and 4, Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 2 Snake Eater and Substance, PS3, FF-XIII, Gran Turismo HD and 5, Metal Gear 4 Guns of the Patriots.
The trinnity of developers will come through, they always do. SquareEnix/Konami/Polyphony-Digital
360 is failing in Japan, if you were a teacher in Japan you would get the same reponse, no one there is really crazy over the 360.
Also look in the same forum of thread of fellow VGers who have problems with their 360's, some have had them repaired twice!!!!
Lost GTA, Assassin's Creed, and Virtua Fighter (Game Informer confirms this month that it's coming out on 360 3 months after the PS3 release)
GTA, Some of the founders of Rockstar have left to form a new company, so the brain trust has left that franchise so no big lost. (Over the past six to 12 months, 10 people have left Rockstar: VP of Development, (2) Director of Marketing, Director of Development, Director of PR, Sr. PR Manager, Sr. Product Mgr, Sr. Web Designer, PR Manager, and PR. There may be some internal discord within Rockstar that are kept hidden in the public eye. But as GameDaily Biz puts it, "is it merely a coincidence that these people have left when there's been so much turmoil at Rockstar and Take-Two? Certainly, when Jamie King (a Rockstar co-founder), two different directors of marketing, and others all leave within the same period that the parent company's stock is in a freefall, it smells fishy.")http://www.gamespot.com/pages/unions/read_article.php?topic_id=24792844&union_id=5621&print=1
Assasins Creed was a Sony exclusive? I don't know one person who is looking for that game, you can have it.
Virtual Fighter 5, on the PS2 Virtual Fighter it was $19.99 and Tekken for $49.99 wipe the floor with them. Again no huge lost.

"We've sold 10.4 million, but the stat you may not have heard is that over half of those sales are from people that didn't own an Xbox 1," Satchell told GamesIndustry.biz in an interview,"
However Satchell's comments are likely to be questioned in some quarters because Microsoft has already publicly admitted that the 10.4 million consoles sold haven't all been purchased by consumers.
Speaking to GI.biz at CES, Xbox boss Peter Moore said that in the context of its own figures, "'Sold' means that we're a wholesaler of hardware and we sell it to a retailer, and that's the important criteria."
