Hi it's my first post and I would just like to say thanks to this forum and section in particular...
I am in the UK and so we aren't totally brought up in the know of everything NFL/football related. Ive been following for a few years, but without the breakdown of what everything meant it took 2 superbowls (only game aired on normal tv here) and wiki help along with a lot of forum reading to fully understand the game. I tried my hand at NFL games (only a fever demo)... but on a weakish Pro mode. So when I got madden 07, thinking my pocket passing intelligent D would work... ventured online... and got destroyed online against (whaddya know) the Vicks of the community. so after owning the game for only 3 days...I was despondent, found this site and learned what it meant to play defence against these guys.

So true story: listening to the guys on here actually helps. it really does. as a result my playcalling on D has improved miles from before. why? simply heres the trick. I realised playing on weakish Pro mode was never gonna get me anywhere. So i decided to start an all madden franchise, and i said for the first season that i was gonna win everygame, however many times it took to replay it, just so i could learn how football is meant to be played... with proper offence and defence. i learnt that to play well you have to think like a franchise, like a team. get the 3 pts on 4th, dont try for 6 when its 4th and long at the opp 30. lol. but anyway, winning (inevitably) the perfect season taught me a lot. FB traps work like magic when you need a yard on 3rd. stay in the pocket, and stay calm. if you see the blitz, use one eye to stop the sack, and the other on the receivers, and when one gets open, go for it. online, nearly everyone i lost to, blitzed everyplay. so i got burned, but why? i panicked... so i realised by them playing the blitz a rec. tends to get open for the pass.

anyway enough about off. heres how my def. increased. I cannot stress enough for guys to spy the QB online. scramblers cant pass properly, so they run around. where are they gonna run to with a LB spy? nowhere. they wait for the Dline to catch up finally, run a bit more, and then they go for the bomb. i used to get burned not only on the scramble, but also on the deep pass. i always used to think if it was high it could be caught. rookie error. for them to bomb it down and me to bat it down thus wasting their downs was how i was gonna win. always. so they play the short pass. but for them to play the short pass, they have to stay in the pocket or play it quick off the scramble. as they cant leave for openfield, they tend to pass on the run. playing a zonal covg. on weak passes results usually in TOver. i realised man covg. was best on the deep ball, and doing the right match ups. also, placing your LBs in covg. behind the DLine will inevitably stop that quick pass down centre, which Qbs love to do. um what else did i learn from these forums and experimentation? mix it up. they will run, so playing spies all the time always expecting the pass/scramble is safe, but loses yards. mix it up. when the game reads "4WR, 1RB, 0TE" its more often gonna be a pass. play the spy, and keep the LBs in centre covg. preventing the draw.

ultimately, here are the fruits of listening and reading to the TV games and reading over the web: I play an American, which is big for a Brit... only because i feel like i have something to prove (i.e. to show i know the game as well)... he plays falcons, me pats (LBs strong, Vilfork and Seymour great for containing, and strong speedy secondary - Asante samuel and Richard Harrison? need i say anymore? lol). I give him the kick - to test his offence out. he runs with vick, spy him out on the cover 2 spy (not strike). first play, runs left, spy follows, passes a huge ball left, asante samuel in zone intercepts and returns for a TD. he gets it back, and uses his elusive RB, 7-7. but then i score again, staying calm in the pocket... and he gets it back... he goes 3rd and out, tries the usual 4th, and gets down again. deep balls always batted down. in the end it comes to the end of the 1st half, i intercept him with a few secs to go and score aagain to end the 1st half 24-7. he quits. as for my all madden franchise, im doing the proper thing now, and using the help ive found, im not quitting and restarting, and playing every match as it comes no restart... and im 10-0, smashing the colts 64-17 (i swear, 4picks best game of my life).

SO.... THANK YOU GUYS! I REALLY APPRECIATE THE HELP... you've taught me a lot about the madden game and football as a whole...
