View Full Version : Are you a Srt8 Balla?
McMadden

Hey want bragging rights that you are a str8 sim player? I lifted this idea from another site. Winner of this tourney would have bragging rights as a str8 player for the week. Then we hold a second tourney the following week, and so on and so on. The first players to sign up are in.
Game play starts 11am eastern saturday 20 March, and Tourney name is VG Sports , games are unranked: what do you have to lose?
Game Play Rules:
ALL RECENT RULES CHANGES WILL BE IN BOLD
1.Motion before the hike of the ball. WRs must clear the offensive line between the tackles, or TE if he is there when you motion the WR, and you must allow the DB to clear in front of the offensive line between the tackles (including the TE) This goes for backs and TE's also.
2. Do not drop your QB back 15-20 yards to wait for a receiver to break his route. This is highly unrealistic and almost never happens in the NFL. Every "blue moon", maybe.
3. One audible for a play. This goes for the offense only.
4. Onside Kicks are not allowed unless down by 14 or more at any point of game.
5. You must punt the ball if your not pass the 50 yard line unless down by 14 or more at any point of game. It 4th and inches, it does not matter, you must punt.
6. Click on click off not allowed. Controlling WR’s (TE,HB,FB included) before catch is allowed
7. Goal Line can only be used inside the 20 yard line markers on both sides of the field.
8. Do not run up the score, show your opponent some respect. If your up by 21 with 1 minute to go, do not go and try to score again.
9. In depth chart, RB's will only be allowed to play their respective position along with playing FB and WR. WR's will only be allowed to play their position. TE's are eligible to play FB and vise versa. All D-lineman are interchangeable. LB's are interchangeable as well. Do not sub any LB's at any D-line positions. All secondary personnel are interchangeable.
10. Stalling - Stalling of time permitted within the final minute of the first half and the final 3 minutes of the game
11. No Huddles - "No huddle offense" permitted within the final 2 minutes of each half and any OT period. Offense must allow defense to get back onsides. If an offsides penalty is called, the defense decides whether or not the penalty is accepted or declined by pausing the game and announcing their decision. Anytime a team is behind by more than 8 points - No huddle offense are allowed in the entire 4th quarter.
12. Accidental No Huddles - unless 4th down, the member that accidently calls a "No huddle" at other times during the game must wait 10 seconds before snapping the ball and give defense time to set up. If 4th down and team would have normally picked field goal or punt - must use time out immediately unless you are in the last minute of the first half or last 3 minutes of game giving you the option of taking a delay of game penalty.
13. Fake punts/field goals - No limit on fake field goals. Teams are allowed one fake punt per game. Punter must be in punters position on fake punts and kicker must be in kickers position on fake field goals.
14. HB Pass play is not allowed
15. Putting star players in to return punts and/or kickoffs.
There ARE teams in the NFL that do this. Players like Tim Brown, Champ Bailey, Deltha O'Neil, etc. do return kicks and players that use these teams will hear no complaints from me. However, players like Marshall Faulk, Clinton Portis, Priest Holmes, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, etc. DO NOT return kicks. Putting them back there is unrealistic and should not be done. If anyone has a question about an individual player....just ask. This also applies to all other BS substitutions. Use your head. Ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?". If you're looking to gain some advantage over your opponent through roster changes you are weak. The only advantage you should be looking for is your play calling ability vs. your opponent's
16. No Glitches or Nanos
17. Sportsmanship
Everything that I've mentioned above falls into this category. Show respect to your opponent with a "GL", "GH", and "GG". Play the game realistically. Be a good winner and an even better loser. If you lose, compliment your opponent on his superb gameplay. Don't say crap like, "You got lucky" or "I played like crap" or "my team sucks" or "I was drunk". Give credit where credit is due. You got beat...take it like a man and get on with your life. Same if you win. No need to let everyone in the room know how bad you just kicked someone's whatever. Show some humility, because it probably won't be too long before you're on the other end of it.
Are you a str8 up baller, then join up. Unique teams no (so pick any team you want to play as) and password will be PM'd to all the signees. GL to the 2nd named VG STR8 Baller for the second week in March!

I cannot control my receiver but the DEFENSE can?
You know you can "JET PACK" with the DBs right? Maybe you should change that. If not it'll be USER PICK city. But hey I'm down!!

I follow these rules myself all but the motion rule. Just my thoughts if I see it on Sundays during the year then thats the way I try to play it. I know the motion rule is a big one in the STR8 community so I guessing I couldn't count myself as one. I like the way the motion rule is in the VGOML where the WR and the DB must clear the line( including the TE). This works for me fine.

Once you take control of the WR you can't click off. You must maintain control of the receiver.

Just a few questions.
After logging into the room, VG Tourney, I expected to see the 8 players there that it showed in the summary. Why were they not there?
When I get there, how will I know who to play, when to play, etc. Haven't done this before. I didn't want to stare at the summary screen all day.
How long should a tourney of 8 to 12 players last? I have gigs normally on Sat nites so I want to make sure I can get some licks in. I bowed out, because one of the rules for the tourney said that if I forfeited the game...BOTH players would be eliminated. I didn't want to do that to someone so I got out of the room.
This tourney is single elimination, right?

Tough game last night. Damn you're good. You were manually moving backs/SS/FS into positions almost as if you knew exactly where I was going. That ESP stuff got spooky...
I guess it just goes with experience. I did get some measure of satisfaction being able to slow down the run on GB some. But your passing picked the hell out of my seams and holes in the zones...:p

Once the tourney room fills to capacity you will be able to see the brackets and who you play next. From there you just instant message him in the room or add him to your buddy list and monitor when he comes on line by going to www.easportsnation.com/games/madden2004/playerstats/home.jsp?playername=((log in with your screen name) then check your buddy list) or wait in the lobby. I set the tourney for 1 day, and its single elimination. If more than 8 people should show, 16, then I would set it to 3 days to complete. So an 8 player tourney you play 3 games to win it all in a day, 16 would be more and I doubt people would hang around for a 5 plus single game elimination tourney.

Before I begin, I'll preface this with this. I am a Madden player second, and avid football fan first. I don't mind people playing with standards, but I shun players that feel thier standards should apply to everyone else. I follow a strict adherance to NFL rules, nothing more.
My opinions belong to me, and me only. They should not be viewed as an attempt to force them on anyone anymore than the original post should be viewed under a similar magnifying glass.
Lastly, I'm apologizing to McMadden. In no way is this a personnal attack as I have expereince in writing str8 rules (original rules for playmadden.us) and I know how hard it is to make everybody happy... that being said, here's my take on the rules you've written.
1.Motion before the hike of the ball. WRs must clear the offensive line between the tackles, or TE if he is there when you motion the WR, and you must allow the DB to clear in front of the offensive line between the tackles (including the TE) This goes for backs and TE's also.
I don't follow this rule... As an offensive player, I have the right to snap the ball at anytime so long as only 1 player is moving parallel to the LOS or backwards. If I'm having trouble blocking a DT or DE with a single O-lineman, I use my motion WR to chip block on him to slow him up before running his route. Against man coverage often the CB will rubbed off in traffic, but that is a danger of running man-2-man that has been around since the 1920's.
2. Do not drop your QB back 15-20 yards to wait for a receiver to break his route. This is highly unrealistic and almost never happens in the NFL. Every "blue moon", maybe.
This one I follow because dropping back too far puts the QB at risk. The OT's wont be able to get good blocks on the DEs. Many times they won't block at all and both will come free. Too much risk... its best to take a 3 step drop and setup in the pocket, if there is pressure, stepup and run it up the middle.
3. One audible for a play. This goes for the offense only.
I don't abide by this one either. My offensive scheme is based on alot of motion and some shifting. Limiting the offense to one audible would only allow me to send 2 players in motion on any given play. i have a sheme that allows me to go from I form to a 4WR, 1TE look by motioning only 1 player at a time, but it requires several audibles.
4. Onside Kicks are not allowed unless down by 14 or more at any point of game.
I almost never kick onside kicks. But i have kicked a few when I was ahead because the retrun team wasn't looking for it. 9 times out of 10, field position is more valuable than possession. Besides, I have faith in my defense to get the ball back.
5. You must punt the ball if your not pass the 50 yard line unless down by 14 or more at any point of game. It 4th and inches, it does not matter, you must punt.
Punts are meant to trade field position for possession. Kicking is an OPTION. NEVER should the offense forfiet a down for the sake of "playing str8". The defense shoud be prepared to play defense any time they don't snap the ball. Anything less isn't football.
6. Click on click off not allowed. Controlling WR’s (TE,HB,FB included) before catch is allowed.
Most of the time I abide by this rule. The exception being when I have 2 or more receivers in the same area on deep passes. i'll move the primary guy to the spot, then switch to the second receiver and try to catch any deflected passes.
7. Goal Line can only be used inside the 20 yard line markers on both sides of the field.
Outlawing the oldest offense in football is shameful. :( What happened to stopping the run? Smashmouth has it's place, and it's not always in the redzones.
8. Do not run up the score, show your opponent some respect. If your up by 21 with 1 minute to go, do not go and try to score again.
I score until the end of the game. I try to stop my opponent until the end too. just because my opponent has given up, doesn't mean I should. My offense's job is to SCORE. That doesn't change no matter what the scoreboard says.
This isn't football. In football subs are unlimited. I'm not sure what this rule is meant to do other than make defenses lazy. Speed mismatches are legal and should be allowed. There are too many young players that will learn to play football incorrectly if this rule is followed.
10. Stalling - Stalling of time permitted within the final minute of the first half and the final 3 minutes of the game.
i'm assuming that stalling is different than running the clock down before snapping the ball. If that's the case, Stalling is ALWAYS BAD. Running the clock is always good. Besides, the offense can't run the clock if they go 3 and out.
No huddle offenses should be legal from kickoff to the final gun for either team no matter what the score. By rule, the offense has the right to snap the ball whenever they want after the ball is spotted. its is the defenses job to get onsides.
Forced timouts? Why can't the offense take a delay? Why must they wait to snap the ball?
13. Fake punts/field goals - No limit on fake field goals. Teams are allowed one fake punt per game. Punter must be in punters position on fake punts and kicker must be in kickers position on fake field goals.
Having a player at the kicker/punter position should be enough information for the defense to KNOW that a fake is coming. It should be a rule that the defense must PAY ATTENTION. If that were the case, this rule would not be required.
14. HB Pass play is not allowed.
BAD RULE. If the QB pitches the ball to a HB and he is still behind the LOS, the forward pass is now illegal, even if there are no linemen downfield? Once again, this rule bails out the defense instead of singing the praises of backside containment that prevents the back from running the opposite direction. Reading the offenisve line in a pass blocks should be enough to tip this play off as well...
15. Putting star players in to return punts and/or kickoffs. This also applies to all other BS substitutions... Ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?". If you're looking to gain some advantage over your opponent through roster changes you are weak. The only advantage you should be looking for is your play calling ability vs. your opponent's
Every play is an attempt to gain an advantage over the opponent, no matter what plays are used. There is no such thing as a BS substitution. Coaches put their best 11 players on the field, if someone thinks that they will have success with a starter at KR or PR, that should be thier choice. By the way, Marshall Faulk has returned kickoffs before, he just doesn't do it often.
16. No Glitches or Nanos
Too vague. What is the difference? And why is there no premium on pass protection, blocking, moving the pocket, or adjustments?
17. Sportsmanship
Show respect to your opponent with a "GL", "GH", and "GG". Play the game realistically. Be a good winner and an even better loser. If you lose, compliment your opponent on his superb gameplay. Give credit where credit is due. (If) You got beat...take it like a man and get on with your life.
Great rule... except it's ambiguous. on one hand it says don't be a sore loser, but it's based on a list of rules that create the most vanilla football possible.
I like the SPIRIT of these rules and what they are INTENDED to do. But I could never abide by them in good conscience and still consider myself a "football" player. Nor could I consider anyone that refuses to play others that don't abide by these rules to be a "football" player either. There's simply too much football left on the table.

Dirt...
Am I missing something? I don't remember ever playing you. perhaps you can refresh my memory...
I also don't remember needing your permission to play. Nothing personal, but I respect your opinion assuming it is based on some form of the truth. Being that wev'e never played, you can't possibly have any truth to on which to base your opinion.
If you'd like to PLAY, so you can see my game for yourself (just don't run Cover 2 the whole game like gtrght420 did or it will get ugly, QUICK).
Until then... I promise not to make comments about your game. If we never play, I'll never comment about your game.
