It was a great feature. Not really sure why it was done away with, but it would make life a whole heck of a lot easier. People can know when their friends are on without having to be playing the game. On top of that, it makes league games a whole lot easier to schedule as well. You don't have to wait around the ps2 for them to show up. You can turn your Speakers up loud and be alerted via a "ding" when someone messages you. That way, you can do other things beside having to sit around for an hour or so till a friend (or league member) gets on or out of a game.
