OK you old geezers. I know we are all going senile here but what is your best sports memory. The moment in sports history that made you feel great, inspired, ecstatic, whatever.
For me, its a tie between watching the 1980 US Olympic Hockey Team beat those Commie bastards in the greatest upset in sports history and being at Super Bowl XVII and witnessing the Skins win their first World Championship, beating Miami 27-17. I can still clearly see John Riggins breaking free on that TD run to put the Skins ahead for good. Now that's a glorious memory.
Honorable mention would have to go to the night I watched the first Sugar Ray Leonard v. Thomas Hearns fight, one of, if not the, greatest fights of all time.

I grew up in LA and I was in 6th grade in 1988 when Kirk Gibson hit the bottom of the 9th HR to win Game 1 of the World Series.
I remember completely falling backwards behind the recliner when he hit it out. Something I will never forget.

Great question thanks for asking....What's my favorite sports memory? Well mine are a bit more personal:
Fishing with my father, playing hockey in front of my mom and dad, getting my first roughing penalty in hockey, going to college football games with my mom (after my father passed away..she wanted to keep me and my siblings focused on college, she believed being on campus was a good way to do that and she was right) ,winning a state championship in football my junior year in high school.
From the larger perspective... yes the 1980 US Hockey team ranks up there as among the most memorable, the hbo documentary sums up why this was such a great victory at such a down time in the US, I hated the commies but man I loved the way they played hockey for the us to beat them was unbelievable (Yes ..I believe in Miracles). The San Diego Super Chargers beating Miami in ot to get to the AFC finals is another great game I remember, the Montreal Canadiens of the 1970s, June Jones restoring pride to the University of Hawai'i's Football Team in 1999, Houston blowing out Wyoming in 1988 (for it is that game that made me fall in love with the Run and Shoot Offense)..so many more..

when you get as old as me, there's a hell of allot of memories to chose from.
the problem is remembering them. :D
i have to go with bobby orr's overtime goal to win the cup, where he's flying through the air with his arms raised.
also, my man bo jackson running down the left sideline against the sea chickens, dude was running so fast, he ran right out of the building. :D
as for the 1980 U.S. hockey championship, i remember al michaels flippin out because he saw a player playing without his stick.
"he's playing without his stick!" :D
-My father taking me to my 1st baseball game when I was 5 Years old In 1976, Saw Tom Seaver pitch.
-On August 2, 1979 Munson died in a plane crash. My father cried like a baby...so did I, It was more because I saw my Father crying.
-In 1993 Yankee Pitcher Jim Abbott threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians.
-1986 Watching that ball go right through Bill Buckners legs brought joy to my heart. As much as I hated the Mets, I hated the Boston Dead Sox even more.

One handed pitcher Jim Abbot.. I still have al his rookie cards.
Personally its kinda hard..
First would be the Death of Pain Stewart. Not just a great golfer but an amazing person..
Next would be winning a college confrence golf tourney!
Shooting a lacross ball at 88 MPH during the High scool skills contest.
Finishing 5th in the the local country golf tourney. Considering there are people who have played against Jack Nicklous and in many US Opens I consider that a good feat!

I believe his name was spelled Payne.
Personally, I will never forget the day Len Bias died. We were all Maryland fans and while we hated seeing him go to the Celtics, we all knew that the kid was destined for greatness. A tragic waste of talent and the loss of a great kid.
I also remember real well the death of Duk Koo Kim after his epic fight with Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. Only people like us really remember that Championship Boxing matches used to go 15 rounds. Kim's death was one of the main reasons they decided to cap Title fights at 12 rounds.

1983- NCAA Championship Final NC State Wolfpack versus Houston Cougars (Phi Slamma Jamma)
No way State should have won the game. They only got in the big dance cause they won the ACC tournament. Houston was unbelievable. I mean they had Drexler, Olijuwan, and Larry Micheaux. They were bigger, faster, and had been airlifting themselves over everybody all year.
Add in the dramatic ending... Derek Whittenburg throws up a prayer and Lorenzo Charles answered it was one of the headlines. By far my most vivid sports memory.

Mine was when it was away at college. The 49ers where playing the Cowboys in the NFC Champianship game. niners where losing in the 4th and the cats in the dorm where all Cowboy fans and they where getting on my head.
I got sick of it and went to the conservatory to practice (wannabe jazz musician). Later, I came back to the dorm waiting to get drove on. Those cats was sad and I didn't have a clue until later.
So basically I missed "The Catch" and have vowed never to leave a game early.

Mine is not so much of a professional but my own. 2 seconds left of the clock, down by 1 (AAU Championship game)..I'm at the FT line (after driving down and throwing up some BS and getting fouled)...The crowd is on its feet and Im scared as ______. Knock them both down and go home with a W. 2nd is the same scenario except we get to run our offense (down by 2) and I come off a screen at the top of the key (my favorite place to shoot) and let one fly. As it goes through the net the buzzer sounds....Oh man the good ole days....

Playing at Penn State the last year we went undefeated... now living with the bitter taste that the Big Ten/Rose Bowl Championship ring that i have should be a co-national Championship ring... but even thought it's bitter sweet i'll never forget that season.

NFL Football playoff game with my favorite team the Buffalo Bills vs the Houston Oilers. That game was the biggest comeback in football history at the time. Normally my weekend off and I was planning on getting ready to move back into my dorm. At least that's what my younger brother told me! cause I decided to cover for a coworker that day, got back that afternoon from working the whole day only to hear "Guess what you just missed?!" oh crap.

Not really all that old but game six of the 1991 world series when Kirby Puckett went yard to send the series into game seven. The announcer said, "And we'll see ya tomorrow night!". I'll never forget that.
