The Counter

How exactly do you stop counters..some people I play use the Patriots,Chargers, or Broncos.. and run counters all game and my defense just gets sucked in the blocks...is there a way to slow this down???

Man coverage slows down the counters. Don't hit commit. Counters work really well against blitzing teams, so don't blitz and try to stay in man coverage...

I use the 3-4, but either formation should do well. Countrol the Saftey as last resort and flow to the play. Try to force it to the inside. Good Luck...

Also, shift your defensive line to the side that you think they will counter too.

There are two ways I try to stop counters.

1.Spread the line, as most counter plays (minus counter-traps) don't develop 'til the RB gets to the edge. Bringing an extra LB off the edge couldn't hurt, either.

2. Try and guess which way the counter is going to, control the DT, and try to shoot through the gap. On every counter play, you'll notice a nice sized hole, generally between the center and guard (A-gap). If you can shoot it fast, you can even sack the QB before he hands the ball off.
