Just had to comiserate a bit with some guys that would understand. It sucks to still have the competitive drive that I had in my early 20's, but the joints of a 35 year old.
I still playing in a weekly men's soccer league. Right now I'm the elder statesman of the team with most of the players clocking in around 24 or so.
Our team has been tearing it up and has been promoted all the way up to the top division. We just had our first game in the "A" League today, but due to Spring Break we only had 11 show up.
Had to go 90 minutes and I'm paying for it now. Got a huge strawberry on my leg, took a shot in the chest so hard that I have a big blue circle with little red hexagons from the ball on my ribcage.
My ankles hurt, back hurts...but I went the distance and played really well. My wife thinks I'm a nut...but it's still worth it.
Too bad that I'll be cripping around all week.
Anybody else still playing competitively and paying the price each time? They are going to have to drag me off that field :)

sucks bc i used to run around the court for 40 or so minutes without stopping

Wrong forum buddy. Read the rules.
I still do flag football and basketball Bert. The only thing that gives me trouble at time is my lower back but all in all, I only feel like never playing anything ever again on Mondays. Used to be 3-4 times a week.

Exactly. It wasnt until I actually turned 30 that I thought I couldnt play professionally anymore. At 27, I was still bitter at the fact I was better than most pros....(basketball)

*****, I dont even try to do anything like that anymore. First i started to lose my breath faster then the younger guys, it took me longer to get my engery back or second wind. Then the pains came later on like hrs after i left the YMCA. My friend has prlobems jest takeing his kids to the park because he over did it, playing flag football when he was about 38. He broke his leg when he fell on a sprinkler head, now he walk with a limp because he broke it by his knee.
I wake up with pain in my lower back and i wish i was 16 or 17 years old. But it ok cus i drinking Milk Now.

i played men's tourney softball until i was 40 & couldn't handle the weekend beatings on my body anymore. Each year the little naggy things seemed to hurt more and hurt longer.
I started playing in my late 20's. Played every position except pitcher & catcher..... until i was about 38.... then the only positions i played were pitcher & catcher...lol.
I was a very aggressive fielder, dive for this, leap for that. If i didn't leave a game with a dirty uniform with blood soaking through it somewhere then i felt i didn't play hard enough.
But it takes it's toll for sure and it gets to a point where you just call it a career and go out gracefully. I still get offers to play in "40 & Over" leagues but i don't. I'm pretty much done. I've had back surgery, knee injuries, all kinds of tendinitis, etc and the body just doesn't repair itself like it used to.
My last game was a big tourney win for the team & i had a really good game.... 6-7 at the plate with 2 doubles, an inside the park HR (no errors, a real one) and one over the fence as well, along with a couple singles for RBIs. I played catcher that game and the only bad part of that game was having the ball knocked out of my glove when applying a tag at the plate.
But i hung up the cleats after that game. It was a good way to go out. But to this day, once in a while, I get that "reminder pain" in some areas, a knee or lower back, that reminds me of what i did to this body while having a hell of a good time :D

This is us guys...lol
I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
but all he kept talking about was
Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days
.
I'm 35 and I still play In a Softball league,( 1st Base\3rd Base) Football league both Flag and "Rough" two hand touch.(LB/TE/RB) The majority of the guys In this league are younger guys, but i can still keep up with them. Up until recently my body would just be sore the following day. But I had a small knee Injury and now along with being sore, my knee starts acting up as well. I believe that most of the soreness and the injury occur because I'm a bit overweight for my height(6'0"/280LBS.) don't let it fool you though, I'm pretty fast for my age and weight. But you can start to feel the speed dwindle a little. I just love playing though.

Ha! Ha! Bert ... I am (almost) there with you. 32 years old ... Play soccer four days a week. Sunday is probably one or two coed games outdoor (90 minutes each). Monday is indoor Mens league top division, Tuesday is coed Indoor, and Thursday is one or two indoor coed games. Now that outdoor is getting ready to start back up right now. My body is just sore pretty much all week. About three and half years ago I started to get monthly massages from a massage therapist and it has helped me tremendously. It kind of recharges my battery ... helps my muscles stay loose so I don't pull a hammy or anything.
I think the key is to do your best to stay in shape year round. I play with people who are 19, 20 and all the way up to over 40. Most of them are young bucks and I can hang right with them. Soccer is more a marathon than a race and sometimes we can wear down other teams who are younger because we play smarter. I say all this to say I play a whole lot, but I have to get my run in to stay in shape. This winter I took a break to kind of rest and recover from some minor injuries and now I am trying to get back in better shape and it is tough. It will probably take me to beginning of May to do it, but you have to keep playing. Look into those massages and some 500 mg Ibuprofin (aspirin) after the games.
I will not ever (I hope) use my age as an excuse for me being out of shape or playing poorly.

Sweet! They just finished the gym at the school I coach at. We are starting up indoor each Friday now. Luck would have it that I rolled an ankle on Tuesday so I gotta sit out tonight so I'll be ready for my outdoor game Sunday. The guys just came by to borrow my futsal ball. Not happy :(

do you enjoy futsal? i played in a league once and hated it, it seemed like Under 8y.o. league soccer with everyone swarming the ball and just kicking. It was probably just because we played on a small basketball court in a small gym though. My favorite is definitely indoor with walls, alot of concentration on footwork and getting open but its very fast paced due to the limited out of bounds rules and smaller sized fields.

I know at 30 and being out of shape I need to do a few things when I play sports with my buddys..
One I need to warm up and take my time doing so.. After we are done I need to cool down and again take my time doing so..
If we all go out and play football or something then go sit on the couch, I wake up the next day and can't move.. Even when I work as a caddie I know I have to cool down after doing all that running/carring.. If not I feel like I do today..

We just play with guys from out team and only 4 on 4 at a time. The quality of play is pretty good. I prefer the outdoor game more, but it's a nice change of pace.

I need some advice on the mental aspect of my recovery. Earlier this year I was playing a pick-up game of basketball. During the game when I landed and dislocated my kneecap and tore my MCL, ACL, and PCL in my right knee. The man guarding me said it reminded him of the injury to Livingston from the Clippers. This was my first major injury in my life. As I rehab the injury now I find myself having flashbacks of the injury. I still have the itch to play sports again when I'm fully recovered. If anybody had a serious injury before please give advice on how you were able to get over the fear of another injury.

Fear is False Evidence Apearing Real!, its all i n your mind once you have fully recovered i would test it with some light jogging then some sprints after that get back out there and doing it and showing your self you can do it is the biggest cure for mental fear of something. just make sure you can run and don't rush it back !
do alittle at a time. i would just go to the court a few days out of the week by myself and shoot around before getting into a pick up game again!

Fear is False Evidence Apearing Real!,
HAHAHA , first time I heard that it came from the mouth of that looney tune Gary Bussi .
Just going off my experience ... I was in a car accident and my knee was snapped... there is a big metal staple holding it all together now... therapy and having to wear a brace for over a year... my knee never got back to a full range of motion... and it twists very easily. After testing they found my injured leg was stronger then my non-injured just from electronic muscle stimulation and isolated weight training... but there is a lot of scar tissue in my messed up knee which flares up in cold weather and will throb constantly when rain is coming...Because of how easy my knee can get strained I pretty much gave up playing basketball although I love the game. I stick with riding my bike and playing raquetball ... Ive sprained my knee a couple of times over the years playing raquetball but that risk is so low compared to how frequently I would sprain my knee playing basketball , the lateral movement of the knee was just too much.
About the car accident, I think about it once in a while , I think about how my life may have been different had it not happened... I think about the pain I feel in my knee every single day. I was riding my bike to work, and there were cars leaving a driveway... I stopped and was walking my bike in front of a van... the driver didnt see me and ran into me while turning... I tried to hold myself and the bike up with my right legs as my left and the bike were going under the van ... snap!
Jem , there is no advice I can give to get you over your mental state as far as your injury... A little fear might be a healthy thing though, it might make you take a little extra care when you play... It might stop you from playing altogether like it did for me, but I only do that because I have hurt myself from simple plays and it's not worth the downtime now... I'd rather just do something else ... But then I had my surgery over 20 yrs ago, Im sure there are surgical advances now that will get you to just as good as before...

Thanks for the responses D And Zymotic. Right now rehab has it's good days and a few bad ones. I may have to hang it up when it comes to basketball and find some other form of exercise. I'm even considering coaching and passing my knowledge to the next generation of stars.

Coaching is cool , still get to play a little bit but at least its not in a game way... I wouldnt completely give up , talk to your doctor after your rehab is done.. My doctor was very specific with me, my first surgery was authroscopic and he told me if I damaged it again I would have to go for the major knee surgery which (was at that time) is the big 8 inch scar down the side of the knee ... If you don't feel any pain, and have a full range of motion you might be ok... I wouldnt give up hope of playing again if I were you, but I would make sure I was very aware of my limits and spoke w/ the dr. about what might be in store if there is another injury .

Im 45, I dont play sports, Once in awhile Football (Flag), But I am a musician, And I know your saying how is that like playing sports, Stamina is big, and Moving around(Showmanship) Like a Rock Star, is alot harder at my age, after a 2 hr show, it feels like a ran a marathon, compared to when I was 18-30, I dont play in a slow blues or Jazz Band, and sit on a stool or just stand there.I play Rock/Punk so you have to be a performer and musician at the same time, and Im the lead guitarist, Im the oldest in the Band, And Im a totally different person on stage, No Pains, Just a u-phoric state...And Im a madman on stage compared to the younger guys...
I might be 45, but people dont believe it, I look in my 30"s, and feel like 50's sometimes, inside:D , I always have had lower back Probs, from unloading Semi-trucks, and a couple car accidents, not my fault, hit 2 times in 1 week in my early 30's both on the way to band rehearsal, and both from drunk drivers hittng us, the 2nd time was head on and I was told I may never walk ect. but I stuck through therapy and at home workouts and eventually worked up to using a cane for 2 years and now Im walking fine, I never get back Probs, except after every show I playout, Im my own roadie, and a madman on stage and a guitar strapped to your back for that long is not as easy as you think, even when I was young....
But I will play Music LIve untill I cant hold a guitar, and Madden untill I cant use a joystick..
They Both Keep me Young, And loving life WIthout BOth, Life would be Hum-Drum..
Thats My story and Im sticking to it:)

This sucks. After workouts or games (flag football, boxing and softball, never playing bball again after rupturing my achillies) I have at least 4 ice packs on me. Both ankles, right knee, lower back and left shoulder.
I'm about to try acupuncture because the tendonitis in my left achillies tendon has been bothering me for a month now.

Wow, I just found this section of the forums.
And let me tell you, you guys are making me feel good!!!
I'm 42, played soccer throughout college until a few years ago.
I switched to ice hockey for more of a challenge, the soccer locally lost it's competitivness. But because of my weaker skating skills, hockey's a challenge.
But anyway I think you guys need to try the warm down method our hockey team uses after the game, which is to drink heavily until you feel good.
Now two days later your in pain, but the first day over its more from the hang over!!
