It's crazy to see this from here. CNN just reported from Meyers CA - that's where I lived when I first moved here.

Some places have hurricane season, others tornado season. We actually have a "fire season" every year.

It's usually brush fires in the wild but sometimes one sparks up near a populated area. Usually it's from a dry lightning strike, sometimes it's human caused (camp fires not being fully extinguished or peeps throwing cig butts out their car windows instead of using the damn ashtray)

Over 200 homes are presently burnt to the ground but amazingly, no one seriously injured at the moment. 2500 acres are ablaze at the moment. the last report I heard, it waas only 5% contained - another 500 homes could be in danger pending the weather (very high wind area at times - ). Close to 1,000 firefighters are on teh scene.

Here's a link to an aerial video that shows how fierce, furious & emmense this fire is (less than 2 min long) .... http://www.news10.net/video/player_news10.aspx?aid=41663&bw=

Althoguh it's pretty far from Reno at this point, we've had one eye on the hilltops all day cuz fire can move so fast and it's so unpredictable...

If you turn on CNN, you'll see them doing updates. Some of the video is nuts. Yesterday they were showing people walking right up to the edge of the blaze so tehy coudl take pictures.... reminds me of those people who go to the beach to watch a tidal wave.

No it hasn't. Truckee is on the northwest side of tahoe, the fire is presently in the southwest corner - but considering how wild this fire is at the moment i'm sure they are on high alert. Give them a call and see if they are ok man.

My Dad has a house up in Truckee and Tahoe is, quite honestly, my favorite place on the whole planet. It depresses the hell out of me to see what is happening up there.

Stay safe NB.

Such is life in the Western United States.

I remember growing up in the Treasure Valley... Some days the fires were so big and so close that the smoke would settle in the valley and people weren't supposed to go outside.

2,500 acres burned at Tahoe...

Compare that to the Yellowstone fire in '88: 800,000 acres.

This is only getting major news play because a few rich folks had their house burned down.

umm, no. it's getting major news coverage because a lot of people live there, not just the "rich" - this isn't Aspen. That was a ridiculous comment...lol.

As you can see there are people in this forum who also have relatives and friends there. A LOT of people go camping up there as well.

how many homes burned in the yellowstone fire? i have no idea... but we're looking at 200 plus at the moment and maybe more coming.

But fire is one of nature's way of replenishing the earth, all we can do as people is get the hell out of the way, stay safe and fight it when it's fightable.

It sucks some people had their homes burned down.

But the area where that fire is is by no means a "poor" neighborhood.

I've spent my fair share of time in Tahoe and in Reno.

The ridiculous comment was you trying to stir up fear by even suggesting that the fire could hit Reno.

Althoguh it's pretty far from Reno at this point, we've had one eye on the hilltops all day cuz fire can move so fast and it's so unpredictable...

Also, Truckee is WELL out of harms way at this point... No need to worry.

If you spent that much time there then you know SLT is not all rich people - half the area is made up of low-skilled casino workers. Again, this isn't Aspen. Yep, there's some rich people but give it a break, are you related to Cho? Because the some of the victims are rich then it's ok?

As far as it hitting Reno - i don't think i suggested it would come here ( since i mentioned how far it was) but in the same token i don't discount anything nature can do. Especially when the wind kicks in and chars start flying.

where did i say it was near Truckee?

No where.

All i said is "i'm sure they are on high alert".

Got Comprehension?

Sorry, I took the quote I posted earlier as a suggestion that the fire could hit Reno. It was certainly a sensational comment. [sic] "We all looked off to the hills, wondering if we were next."

Are people raiding the grocery stores for food and toilet paper too?

Ok...So some peace of mind (at least for your own safety) the next time you look up to the hills... In order for that fire to even come close to Reno, it would have to burn 500,000+ acres. Fear not for Reno, fear not for Truckee.

Again, it sucks people are losing their homes. Don't get me wrong, I feel for them. If I came across otherwise... I aplogize.

Sounds like the winds have died down... They should be getting this thing under control soon (Tuesday, Wednesday?)

GOT COMPREHENSION?

I was further supporting your previous statement.

You said it wasn't near Truckee, prob. on high alert... I said Truckee was out of harm's way.

Granted, I could have been much clearer if I had elaborated on the point such that you would have understood exactly where I was going with that statement.

Part my fault, indeed.

I'll give you a half-pass on the comprehesion check, mmk?

Blah, you know me better than that.

You and I have had plenty of productive discussions.

Take it as a misunderstanding and leave it at that.

I know what you said, as I'd quoted it earlier. I was trying to emphasize the sensational tone I sensed from that statement. Got it? Nothing personal.

My point remains... Reno is in no danger.

Comprehend?
