Been a while, need some help

It's been a while since I was into making sigs and stuff. Been a while in general since I've used ps for something other than work lol.

Say I have multiple pictures or renders that I want to put on a canvas. How would I make it so that the transition from the render to the canvas for each individual picture is smooth so that they all look like one picture when combined? Anybody have any clue what I'm talking about here?

Something kinda like that, but what I'm looking for is a technique to use so that it looks better (not like it does here). Am I making sense? I think it's called masking an image.?

On the banner for the league, notice the very center where the two players are merged but it isn't overlapping or anything. That's what I'm talking about. Any help?
