The Redskins have released linebacker Lemar Marshall, which comes out of nowhere. I mean, Marshall was fighting with Rocky McIntosh for the weak-side linebacker starting job ... and McIntosh was tearing it up so far this preseason. But with Marcus Washington dislocating his elbow and Marshall's versatility, it shocked me to hear this news.
After two seasons playing mostly on special teams, Marshall got his chance as a starting linebacker with the Redskins in 2004. Replacing an injured LaVar Arrington at weak-side linebacker, Marshall started 14 games and logged 82 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
In 2005, Marshall moved to middle linebacker and had his best season, recording 132 tackles (103 solo), two sacks and a team-high four interceptions.
The Skins did sign Randall Godfrey to, basically, take Marshall's job.
The Skin Patrol, like me, doesn't understand this at all.
Gary Fitzgerald goes on to note that "Marshall is among the success stories for the Redskins' personnel department this decade" then documents that success, which makes the move all the crazier, in my opinion. And to replace what I thought was a clear-cut "Redskins guy" whatever the fudge that concept is supposed to mean now, we sign someone else's 11 year veteran who happens to be bigger, although I can't confirm that since he doesn't exist in either the current or former NFL player's list at the league's official site.
