View Full Version : Can someone explain the NFL blackout rules?

why are teams forced to blackout 75 miles around the game if they don't sell enough tickets? anyone know or understand these rules. i noticed it for the jaguars.

Supposedly blacking out the game when it is not sold out creates incentive for fans to go to the game and enhances the revenue and earnings potential of the home team (stadium owner). Not allowing other stations to show other games while the home team is playing enhances the revenue for the home network.

Every week that the crappy Jets and the crappy Giants both play on a Sunday afternoon, the crappy Ny market doesn't get a doubleheader on fox/cbs.

I hate living in the nyc market... costs me 10+ free games to watch every year.

I live in upstate NY (Comcast), and sometimes we get games opposite the Jets and Giants. Looking at the listings for this Sunday, theres one scheduled for 1pm opposite the Jets.

On the other hand, for 4pm, all we got is the NE/Dallas game.

At least this week the Giants play on Monday, so you should have another option.

Alas, living 25 miles from nyc (geographically) i never get the games opposite either team.

One more reason not to live in the NYC metro area.

i may try to see if directv will give me the west national feeds of the major networks, as LA doesnt have to worry about a team.

and not having a team is exactly why fans in LA have the best of both worlds.

and if I lived out there, I could care less about having some transplant team come into town and possibly cause me to miss the big 4:15 game. I would HOPE they wouldn't sell out.

If they don't sell out you don't see any game. The only teams that really consistantly have a problem with blackouts are the Bills and the Cards.
