I don't know if they were running Run and Shoot there, can't tell from the video. But they were running triple option out of that exactly like Portland State was for the first 3 or 4 games of the 2008 season. But Mouse dropped the triple option becuase running it with the Run and Shoot stunk up their execution.

It's called the Crazy Option. Florida and Utah run it. It actually doesn't develop much more slowly because the backside slot just runs and the QB will shovel it forward before he gets there if the DE takes the QB. Here's a link.

  3. So the backside slot would be the "dive" and the S would be the pitch man? That sounds interesting. Sounds like it might take longer to develop with a shovel pass instead of a Dive tho.

We would just use a shovel by the backside slot to replace the Dive, and we could be very good at the shovel because of the half-roll shovel screen along with this. I think this would be much easier for the QB as far as the shovler read on the DE because the QB just attacks outside of him immediately and then shovels underneath rather then coming off the FB and then going outside. This way we wouldn't have to use short motion to get into position for the Triple Option which helps it's effectiveness, and we wouldn't have to teach the ride-mesh with the FB which is generally one of the most time consuming parts of the Triple Option. So what do you think?

I think I've got something figured out here Chomppig. As a coaching staff we decided to stay in doubleslot but maybe go to the Portland St. Pistol/Doubleslot look alot more for the small Quarterback and this Crazy Option idea could be great!

Hey Bud. I know you've seen the thread bout the possible change in offense from Double Slot to Shotgun, but I've been thinking about a triple option out of Doubleslot and wondering, maybe it could work if you didn't have to use a distinct short motion to run it so I came up with this.
    .................X...................T..G..C..G..T ...................Z

You would run it like the veer but say your going to the right, so Y's side. You would have the normal mesh-read on the DE, but instead of short motion backside to get the pitch, you have Y take 3 backword steps and get into pitch relationship with the QB just like on a speed option. Play was just a thought.

Yeah it's pretty ridiculous how far ahead of everyone he was. And just to clarify a little bit he didn't invent the Doubleslot to run the Run and Shoot and triple option he just had three different motions in his offense and decided he could use his new triple option which he called the "Cowboy Run" off of his short motion. Just to state the fact Tiger Ellison knew how powerful the Triple option would be if allowed to be seperated from the Run and Shoot and read down lineman. That is why he based his whole Cowboy series off the simplified, less powerful version.
  10. I think I remember reading somewhere that Ellison ran a triple option play in his offense but I didn't know he was that advanced with it. Thats very interesting to know that he was doing things that are only now starting to be used. He was really ahead of his time.
