How do I stop the short passes?

I can stop the run, and deflect the medium to long pass, but the short pass to the sides, or down the middle kill me. If i blitz its not quick enough, and I was hoping somebody could give me some tips. I usually play with dallas, or Miami.

Blitzing against this type of offense is playing right into the hand of your opponent. He knows he can get the pass off before the pressure and that more areas will be vacated by the blitzing defenders. You should set up your D like you are blitzing, but play heavy coverage so he throws quick right into it.

I also have trouble defending the routs that are underneath the yellow zones.

How bout creating your own zone blitz, or man coverage, and dropping a DE or two into zone... just a thought.

For one: try to mix up your D as much as possible. If you sit in zone the whole game you will get picked apart. Two: I like to make my MLB spy the qb, I will drop him back to that sweet spot where guys always pass in the middle pre snap. It will stop that quickly. Typically when I do that I am man to man or cover 1. As for the flat pass, I assume it is the RB they are passing to, as most inept players will do this the whole game. I will start by simply highlighting the RB, if that doesn't seem to be working I will control my DE and follow the RB like stink on *****. Hope that helps

Only works against very impatient players who don't wait for the receiver to clear the Spy. And even if you get him to the right spot, the MLB may not even respond depending on what difficulty you are playing on.

Like said above, lure the player into thinking you are once again bringing the blitz olny to drop back into pass coverage. I often do this when someone begins to counter my nanos with slants, i audible to a cover 2 but still bring my backers into the A gaps giving him the exact same look and 9 times out of ten the first time i do it one of my OLB is getting a pick.

You can also try variations of zone blitzes or taking D linemen and putting them in hook zones so you can still run man nanos but be covered aginst quick hitters.

Press your coverage up front. That's what stops me.

if you can, use a 4-4 defense, this puts 8 men in the box(4 d-line, 4 linbackers) i know that the titans have this defense and i use it quite often... any of the coverage option given to you in the 4-4 gives you an increased chance to stop the run and stop the short passes.. play around with it! have fun and be patient... the only bad thing about the 4-4 is that it's somewhat vulnerable to the deep threat so make sure you know what package your opponent is using (such as a 4 wide out set) before you use this... even then you can use cover 4 and that defends against the deep ball... good luck!
