I don't think people were upset that OJ got off because they wanted a black man to go to jail. I think people were upset because everyone knows that OJ killed those people. However, like someone else said, white folk didn't go wild'n out over a decision that they didn't like. It's too bad that if Zimmerman gets off, there will probably be riots. He'll probably have to have police protection.

At the very least OJ knows what happened. He may have not done it himself, but he was involved. It wasn't like OJ was sitting at home watching Naked Gun 33 1/3 and the police came barging into his house accusing him. He is/was scum.
The issue with that case, as will be the issue with Martin/GZ case is that the law doesn't always jive with what is right and just. You have to prove XYZ, and ABC, but in the court of common sense we all know what right from wrong. Sometimes you can't prove it beyond the shadow of a doubt. Sometimes the bad guy does get away. That's life.
His actions nor alibi pass the sniff test, but noone is going to be able to prove him a liar.
Under the law of Florida Zimmermann probably didn't do anything wrong except be a pen1s jack@ss with nothing better to do. Kid is dead because the law allows dumb@sses to obtain, carry, and discharge firearms. They need to seriously take a deep look at that law.
You can't control people's prejudices. A racist person is going to be racist. But knowing that-- you cannot allow the human element to be such a factor in life or death situation. You can control who is allowed to own a gun along with the parameters in which they are allowed to use it.
The stand your own ground law allows citizens to combine their personal feelings with a dangerous yet now defensible action.

Joe, I generally agree with what you said...but for one thing. If whites simply wanted justice, and it wasn't about OJ being black, then how did it have anything to do with race? I think the problem was with that cop...Fuhrman was it??...didn't he have some racist stuff in his past? If it had been Bart Starr instead of OJ, and he had done all the bizarre things OJ did, I think whites would have been upset that he got off.

No no, I'm not saying specifically control who owns firearms. I'm not saying you try to figure out who is racist and deny them a gun. In fact, I said the exact opposite.
I'm saying that the stand your own ground law assumes that some dummy isn't going to feel comfortable enough to go following people around the neighborhood. The law assumes that we will be responsible 100% of the time. I say 100% of the time because we're talking about a matter of life and death so with 100% accuracy is exactly the only way it is effective. Unfortunately the quickest way to shatter that 100% is for a 1 lone knucklehead to do something like this. It completely ruins it.
That's my point, you can't control prejudice or any other variables. It would be silly to try -- but you can take away that comfort zone that someone like Zimmermann had because I'm sure he knew he could fire his gun if he "felt threatened".
It's one thing to own a gun, it's another to walk around knowing that if you feel threatened you can fire it. And it's a completely different topic if you know these things but are immature, insecure, prejudice or carry any other common negativehuman emotional baggage with you.
lol noooooooooo! Jeebus!

While Whites wanted justice for the murder victim, Blacks wanted retribution for the disadvantages they sometimes receive within the judicial system. Those 2 things just about set the stage for the entire racial tensions that we still talk about to this day.
Yes Mark Furman was a racist detective. Once that came out, it was pretty much a given in the court of Black people opinion the dirty racist detective was trying to pull a fast one on Nordberg. lol
Not to mention it wasn't to far from the Rodney King beating. The 90's was racial tension-puh-looza.
Had it been Bart Starr whites would've been still upset but it's disingenuous to think that a not guilty OJ Simspon ruling gets the same feelings as a not guilty Bart Starr ruling. Our country has come a long way, but still has a long way to go.
