I bought a Roku for my wife. She watches it pretty often. Never used an Apple tv
Apple TV if you have an iPad3 or plan to buy an iOS retina device in the future.
Not a big fan of the only HDMI net boxes from either Roku or Apple myself.
Or how about the Wi-Fi Sony Netbox SMP-N100 (N200 is 3D capable), and can connect to any TV, CRT included. Also it's DLNA compatible, I stream from my iMac and PC to this device.

I have the Western Digital TV, Western Digital TV Live Hub, and Apple TV.
I don't use much of the services, but the WD boxes have a ton more to offer.
I have a Drobo FS with 8 TB and 4 TB filled of movies/music/ and the WD boxes have no problem finding the Drobo on the network and streaming from it. The Apple TV (I believe) can only stream from a pc already running iTunes. And Apple TV doesn't play all of the video formats I believe.
The only thing I was really impressed with the Apple TV was showing my apple devices on the TV (wireless airplay mirroring)
and (jailbroken) PLEX
PLEX is the most awesome open source media server software I've seen and it's still evolving. But you have to jailbreak your apple TV in order to install it on the ATV. Anyway I haven't used the Roku, but I'll check it out soon (prob this week)
But it seems that out of the box the Apple TV falls a little short on options and features where the other boxes are already going full steam.
Edit: Just read that PLEX is available to be put onto the Roku. I'm sold. I'm going to get a Roku today.

How about building a HTPC? Look into it, the end result is well worth the trouble.
You can install WMC, SageTV, or XBMC and have plugins like YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu.
Will cost a little more but much more flexible than the streaming boxes.

What do you like the most about it? Top three things?
Do you also have regular cable/directTV?
So why is PLEX the most awesome open source media server?
Do you also have cable TV or direct TV?
I am hoping this will allow me to get closer to cutting the cord ...

Plex media server is installed on a pc that has access to your media. Plex media client is installed on the roku or apple tv.
The interface is fantastic. It also utilizies metadata to provide movie information, by looking at the title. This is super helpful for me because I have terrabytes worth of movies. Some I remember what they are about, and some I have no clue or forget that I have them.
Other media center software only provides you your library by folder structure.
For example:
On my western Digital I have the following folders organized..
Video
---Movies
-----Comedy
-----Horror
-----blah blah balh
Beneath each genre I'll see the titles. But I have so many that I have no idea what some of them are. Some movies I just downloaded because I read a plot, thought it sounded good, then never watched it, and have forgotten what its about.
Plex looks at the title, reaches out to the internet, and brings back all of the information for the movie.
You can also stream your library to your android or apple devices on wifi -- or even when you're out of the network. (havent' tried this, but coworker showed me)
Other media software shows you your library by folder. The interface is the best I've seen so far. And navigating the menus to get where you want to be is quick. My western digital box is kinda clunky. I get what I need, but the interface is kinda slow - especially when I already know where I want to end up.
It's a little hard to value you it, because you're coming from nothing. But I was really impressed because I've tried so many of these things already.
I have cable, but between hulu plus being $7.99 and Netflix being $7.99 I'm seriously thinking of quitting cable.

True. Also with Amazon Prime/Instant watch and having an Xbox 360 which can give you ESPN (live sports), I am seriously thinking as well. Those 4 services should give me the TV/movie content I need. I think with the Roku Box, it could be the piece I need.
I just need to figure out how to watch the TV shows I watch on a daily basis on this device. I assume torrenting is possible , but just in case that goes away.
