    My daughter has ADHD

Formally diagnosed. They put her on Ridilin. I'm not happy about it. Shes sooo free spirited... and I feel like the medicine is going to kill that. I understand she'll be more "behaved" but at what cost??? I'm afraid she'll be this little zombie instead of the fun free spirit I know she is.

Any of you ever deal with this?? What are your thoughts???

BFM, I was a ritalin kid from 5th grade up until my sophomore year in college. Still did very well on the SATs and completed college with no issues. It's not a big deal. You just need to be involved during homework time and stay on top of her assignments. Keep her focused and the rest takes care of itself.

Just got back on Concerta. Took it throughout high school. Lost 60 LBs over the course of a year and a half but this go-round my appetite has been fine.

I think you may be generalizing the effects of the type of medicine a little bit. Everyone reacts differently, but it's not going to change the person that she is.

I was a very hyper kid to begin with. The ritalin definitely helped me keep focused but as I matured I realized I didn't need it. It definitely served its purpose during the awkward high school years. But you're right, the medication will effect people differently.

BFM, start having an open dialogue with your childs health practitioner and ask all the concerned questions.

How old is your daughter? Be careful with medications, man. There has been a massive increase in the diagnosis of childhood bipolar disorder. Many times, they first diagnose ADHD, and later it changes to bipolar. It used to be unheard of to diagnose bipolar in children. I work with at-risk youth, and almost all have them are on some sort of medication. There's a Frontline documentary on Netflix called "The Medicated Child." I recommend watching it.

    Well.. thats the thing...

Both ADHC and BI POLAR are hereditary. Her mother shows signs of the BI POLAR traits.. Me.. I show signs of ADHC.

My daughter is VERY young. She turns 7 in 2 weeks. I'm kind of at the mercy of the doctors though, and what they think. They seem to think its ADHC...

Her dose of Ridilin is very low so.. we will just have to see how she takes to it. It goes against all I believe. Like I said... I am most likely ADHC.. although never truly diagnosed I show all the signs.. but.. I fight it, and I use it to my benefit at times. Having that kind of energy when my peers of the same age cannot.

I firmly believe in positive mindset, but I 1. dont get enough time with my daughter to instill that in her, and 2. shes 7... its hard to explain that to a 7 year old, that you really do have control... that its simply your choice and that you can actually harness this and use it as a gift and not a hinderence.

Everybody is sooooo concerned about controlling her... and I definatly dont want her to be acting like she has, but.. I want her to be able to use this gift.. because in many ways.. when used correctly.. it is a gift.

I dont know if any of that makes sense.....

My daughter has gone through the same thing. She turned into a complete zombie on medication. She would come home from school and sit on the couch and cry. I would ask her what was wrong and she would tell me she didn't know. Needless to say she is no longer on that schit. I took her to a counselor and she told me some very useful natural alternatives that have helped A LOT.

My roommate has un-medicated ADHD....give her the medicine. He can't focus for more than 10 seconds, so he never gets his work done, never wakes up for work or class, how he's still here is beyond me...

It's my personal belief that ADHD is way over diagnosed. A kid won't sit still in class? ADHD. A kid has a hard time paying attention? ADHD. Put em on meds. Instead of working with kids to teach them how to control themselves, we label them ADHD, medicate them, and get them out of the normal classroom. That is not to say that ADHD does not exist...it does exist. I just think that too many doctors/teachers are too quick to label something ADHD cause in some ways it's easier.

Every post here is good info thus far.

It is over diagnosed ... medications may not be the best route, however, it is like glasses for some children. They may live without it but they are at a disadvantage. DSF is right too, if you have medicated your kid, watch her reactions and make sure it has little or no deleterious effects.

Concerta is a good choice over rids because the side effects are less intrusive. Rids is the better mental stimulant though.

People say the kids are less active zombies, not too experience with this issue but it seems counter intuitive to the overall effects of the drugs. Maybe tied from overstimulation ... I have to look into this.

I am not a pharmacologist, but I have some background in developmental psyc and human anatomy/physiology, and personal experience within my family.

Agree 100%. My son doesn't like to sit still in school, but if I put on a 1 hour transformers movie he is a statue. I can stand behind him and talk and he won't be able to hear me. Sounds like he can focus just fine to me. A lot of times it is the lack of discipline that causes ADHD. Not saying that is the problem with Bearfan but in many cases there is no discipline in the home. The kids just won't do something if they are not forced to do it.

For instance, I tell my son to pick up his toys. He starts out great but after 5 minutes he wanders around like an idiot. I then take away his favorite toy and all of a sudden the room is miraculously cleaned. Huh, sit still and listen in class or you can't watch tv tonight. See if that works.

I was the king of ADHD. Take something away that I wanted or make me uncomfortable and I had the focus of sniper. Amazing.

You know what's funny? I always needed some sort of incentive to get tasks done when I was younger, and it doesn't surprise me that I am in the field of sales for the last 5+ years. I remember as a kid I would get money if I got A's and B's on my report card. The carrot was dangled in front of me and I did just fine. I will be doing the same thing with my kids in the future as well. But honestly, the ritalin did help and I also have good parents who were involved so it was the perfect storm. It's not a magic pill, you have to work at it.

Beastie, I liked the last line in your post lol. I'm pretty much the same way.

Oh trust me.. discipline is not a problem. If anything.. her mother and I both are on top of her all the time. At some point though... you cant discipline them 24/7.... when you reach that point, you have to start considering that there are other issues. Especially when they start lighting things on fire and stuff like that.

Now.... I will say that I have far fewer problems then her mother has, but I also have her less, and dont have to deal with the homework aspect for the most part. She has her worst problems at school though.

20 years ago they would have diagnosed her as "not well behaved" and gave you a manual on parenting.

if your no happy with treating the ADHD with medication, im sure you could manage another way.

i agree... and the results kind of support you... the means to diagnose ADHD have not drastically increased, yet the number of diagnosed children increases significantly every year.

its just a an easy out for docs, and an easy dime for the drug companies
