PS3 problem with trying to restore files and " Preparing please wait " problems. HEL

My son got a message today on the ps3 said something along the lines of problem with file or something like that. I hit ok and it had to restore or something like that. After it finished, it just kept going back to that screen. I googled that message and I did the procedure to hold down button to turn system off, hold again to turn on then release after hearing the double beeps, connect controller using usb cable, choosing no. 3 ( restore files i believe it was) I know it was the right option that was highlighted in bright red on the net to make sure you choose. After that it said " Preparing please Wait " and it never went beyond that. I did this for about 5 sequences and even unplugged system after turning off and stayed unplugged for bout 30 mins. I just plugged back in and now trying again to see what it does but appears to still be stuck on preparing please wait.

I bought the ps3 in 2008 and it is a 40 gig. Help please

I think you're just going to have to spring for a new one. If you were to get it fixed it would practically cost the same as a slimline, and you can get them for under 200 on a wholesale site with free shipping.
